Those small wall units are for housing human remains. I believe they're called niches. They can be bought in lieu of a gravesite if the person is cremated. Our local funeral home that's nearest me (right around the corner, actually) has a large, thick stone wall outside with the niches rather than inside the home itself. I don't know if the funeral home has any inside; I haven't seen them because we took our parents' ashes and spread them in places of meaning - the lake across from where my mother grew up, and the cabin where my father spent his best times hunting and fishing.
