The library you're thinking of that burned was the Library of Alexandria in ancient Egypt, which Julius Caesar burned down in 48 BC. It's possible only a portion of it was destroyed rather than completely, and as far as we know or think we know, the library itself was already in decline. Still, you're right, likely an untold amount of incredible information was lost when a portion of the library was burned down.
