if sheriff peterkin was still alive she would've believed them definitely. but shoupe has time and time again not believed in these kids. for one, he didn't believe the pogues when they said rafe killed peterkin. he didnt listen to the pogues when they said that ward killed big john. (yea we know he didn't actual kill him but that was his intention after shoving him and making him hit his head and then threw him overboard...), also in season 2, pope, kie and jj saw ward kill some man that knew about the weapon used to kill peterkin. they told him about it and he didn't believe them. i understand why they'd be a little wary. just throw the whole sherrif away 🤦🏽♀️
