by this point you've seen the next few episodes ahead and know that Simon's mark is the Mark of Cain and the thing that pisses me off about this is that it was a bigger deal in the books. Simon was on trial with the other vampires for breaking vampire laws and was most likely going to be executed, so Clary in her efforts to make sure that wouldn't happen, used her rune magic to draw the Mark of Cain on him. It was so much more emotional when it was someone just trying to save their best friend, using a great power she didn't completely understand. There were consequences for Simon bearing that mark and Clary being the one to give it to him, the Clave were angry with her and the other Shadowhunters were afraid of her. The way Simon gets rid of it is also better in the books, but I won't spoil it until you get to the episode.

Maryse is what I'd call a prime example of perfect redemption arc/character development. Can you believe she went from “you have humiliated us” to “thank you for loving my boy”? Even though I always thought that she loved her children, in season 3 she FINALLY accepted them for what they really are, both Alec and Izzy. She's a little different from how she is in the books (the asshole parent was Robert), but I still like her a lot.
