Dude sent his daughter to the king, created a rift between her and Rhaenyra, tried so hard to place Aegon in the throne and now just because he can't control him does not make him good. Instead of looking after he children, he literally focused on making that and Aegon who is the most unloved is destroying that legacy now with the death of his son who he actually loved unlike Viserys.

Kingsguards are meant for life of service and they have to do their duty as they see. Like with the Night's Watch, at this time, they honor the duty part a lot.
