In the first few episodes there is a lot of world building with terms and objects. Clary is a shadowhunter through her blood. The runes enhance their powers. She does not have the training. Shadowhunters are trained from a very young age before they are put into service. Alec, Jace and Izzy trained together so they usually work together.
