Dean was the best parent that Sam ever had and, while I ADORE JDM, John Winchester is an awful father to both of his kids but in very different ways
I love this episode so much because it really starts to show how much responsibility John put on Dean to raise himself and his brother and blaming him when anything goes wrong

the more we explore about the winchesters and their father, the more we get that John was just not a good dad. he was a terrible father to Dean, and this episode was a little hint that he was abusive towards him. maybe not all the time like Max’s father and uncle, but certainly moments. and unlike Max, Dean didn’t grow up to resent him, he grew up apologizing for his fathers behavior, which isn’t that strange for child abuse victims. there’s another episode later on, i think Season 5 maybe that we get a better and bigger hint at it

Dean obsessed as I am, this is actually my favorite episode of Season 1 :)
I love whenever we get any insight into how the boys grew up. One thing that's always bothered me is they act like, "oh poor Sam, never getting to have a childhood" but in my opinion he got to have more of a childhood than Dean did. He got to chill and watch cartoons and not be responsible for anything, while Dean got stuck with all the responsibility.
I think that look John gave little Dean after he fought off the Striga was super telling. That was harsh. He did something that was just for himself ONCE, and it went so bad that to this day he's never gotten over it.
I do like that Sam acknowledged that he could have been more understanding about how Dean is with their dad. But in true Dean fashion he ran screaming from talking about his feelings XD
Your chicken pox rant made me remember this one time that I got suuuuuuper sunburned, and had to "T-pose" while covered in aloe vera. We watched this awards show for stunt men. You always have the best tangents :p
Great reaction as always!
CAN'T WAIT FOR THE FINALE!
Sending you happy thoughts <3
P.S. I'm going to go 20. No idea why.

This is one of my favourite s1 eps.
I love how we take a deeper look into Dean's head and their past, why Dean is so adamant on follwoing their dad's orders etc.
(I already said this on youtube yesterday, but didn't have time to actually watch the reaction until now, so here again as a proper comment :D)
Yeah I think most of us been there like "don't throw the spaghettios into the waste". XD
Yes the shtriga could have come to feed on Sam even if Dean would have been there. The only difference would have been, that Dean would have been there to kill it immediately. But to ask that of a kid...
Also that Dean said John looked at him differently after that... Dean is not to blame for this, because he was a kid. John left them there, two young kids for multiple days all by themselves, putting that responsibility on Dean's shoulders isn't a thing you should do to a child that age. So if anyone other than the shtriga is to blame then it's John. On the other hand it's always easier to blame others if you feel guilty yourself.
A totally different discussion is if John left them there for bait as well, which could have been because he was back at a very convenient time, but then again he would/should have known Dean left the room... so could be either I guess.
All these last few points could go on forever, so I'm gonna leave it like that rn.
I like that you pointed out Dean's childlike side and that he couldn't really have when he was young, because he always had to be a gurdian etc.
Agree I think there are a couple of episodes in the first season feel like they aren't really set to have a specific point in the overarching story.
Hope you have a great day.

PS: Still with the 12.

The Motw episodes do tone down after the first couple of seasons and when you do get them it will usually be mixed with the family drama between the brothers + other characters that connect to the main plot so it's not completely random. Although, no spoilers but some of the best episodes of Supernatural are those motw episodes so look out!

Def feel you with the disconnect between the main story episodes and the motw episodes. I sort of see it as a trade off, personally. I think this show does motw very well; they're usually at least of decent quality. In exchange though, those motw episodes can come immediately after a like, *deep lore* episode or something. It's basically a roll of the dice each time which type of episode we'll get.
This one wasn't bad though, the parallel is on-the-nose, but makes sense. Good to see more JDM too.
Most significant actor thing this time is that Dr Hydeker also played Haytham Kenway in Assassin's Creed 3. The mother in the park, though, played a different character as recently as episode 12, Faith.

Sam brought up in episode 17 that they shouldn't have let their dad go off by himself when they left Chicago, I'm not sure if you heard them talking about it or not but it was at the beginning of the last episode.
