I'm not sure about this, but by the surprise on his face, I feel like that was the first time he's actually looked at them in a while. I suspect he knew it was happening though, especially after seeing one of his feathers fall off and I think apologizing to Linda was sincere but also a low-key desperate attempt to fully atone, and so he was just still shocked and heartbroken when he finally looks at his wings after she accepted his apology.
