In fairness, Damon relapses because every single person is constantly telling him that he is a no good monster without Elena, even Stefan. No one is ever saying to Damon that he is a good person. Every time anyone else does something horrible everyone surrounds them and gives them support and encouragement that they are a good person, but even when Damon does something right, which if we are being honest, is quite often, it goes unacknowledged and people continue to tell him he is a horrible monster with no humanity and can never be forgiven or change for the better. It is one of the most annoying constants in this show.

Its great to see damon fight back he is trying his best to hold on and not just for Elena but also because of Stefan. He was so concerned watching him full on Ripper mode. Seeing Stefan this episode always reminds me of Klaus at the end of S2 when it was revealed to us he wanted stefan to be his wingman because of his Glorious Ripper reputation. And we haven't actually seen Stefan as full ripper in the present- only a few glimpses in S6 and in season 3 his humanity was off but i don't think he was a ripper atleast not like how we see here so considering all that its a good thing specially for the actor. But it should only not turn into something bad for our group and Stefan takes time to heal specially since he feels so guilty so its really very sad for him.

I think he's way more in control of that than anyone, especially Stefan, gives him credit for. He might purposely keep it low, but I've noticed "no humanity Damon" has always been different than other vampires.
