History Hijinks: Was Antonio Stradivari Wasting His Time?

I know how that title looks, but I swear everything will make sense.

This video was born from a moment when I was being very stupid. Luckily, my brain usually has the good manners to make it the Funny kind of stupid.

I'd point out that with its four strings and the steeper possible angles between them, Vivaldi could write more virtuosic music for the violin than for the viol [pronounced VIE-oal, Mr. Scholar!] Listen to the string crossings in the third movement of Summer, and how the soloist can wail away at two notes at once with no fear of grazing a third string by mistake. Also note that operahouses, which slowly started to show operas to a paying public, needed something that could project to the back of the hall, which twenty violins could and lutes and lironi could not

We’ve learned that art and craftsmanship is based as much on chance and trends as it is on inspiration and planning maybe?
