Trope Talk: Manly Men!

I got a few requests to "balance out" the female characters trope talk with this one, so here we go!

Comments

I'm not trying to invalidate the video (as you said, a counter-example doesn't disprove anything) but in the "Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them"-Movie by JK Rowling only the antagonist could be classified as "manly man". None of the four protagonists is the typical manly man, and even as a group they don't fit the profile. Especially the main character, Newt Scamander doesn't fit. He isn't a particularly powerful wizard, woman aren't a particlular mistery to him (not more than man are), he isn't confident and doesn't really have leadership-skills. I think JKR did this very deliberately in awareness of this trope.

You're not wrong! This name is the result of a Twitter poll and, to be totally honest, this was also the name I was least set on. I was gonna call it "dudes" or "male protagonists" but people said that was too boring, despite this one being rather less accurate. However, I didn't think it'd be fair to disregard the poll results, so here we are. Sorry for the confusion!

I not sure if our definitions of 'Manly Men' are the same. This seemed just to be focused on male protagonists in general and never really focus on what I and those around me term manly men.

Along with how every Superheros nemesis is the main character but different colour pallet.

Great video Red, I love these Trope Talks. One trope I'd love to hear you talk about is the "Parallel Rivals" trope. Where two enemies are incredibly similar to each other, and grow at around the same rate. Examples being Zuko and Aang, Rey and Kylo Ren, Naruto and Sasuke, etc...
