Deep Blue Q&A Question Collection

After far, far too long, the Q&A question collection for Deep Blue is here. Ask your questions in the comments of this post and I'll answer them in video format. These questions may be directed at myself, Ryan (the composer), or Arcaxon (the graphic designer). One question per person, please.

(Yes, the Austrian Wine Q&A is absurdly late. I unfortunately deleted my half of the Q&A but Vex and I will be recording it again soon)

I have a “chess” app on my phone that includes an AI that can be set to different levels of difficulty. To what degree is the technology in this AI inspired by Deep Blue? As in, is the technology behind it the same? It may not be a question you can answer, but I’m curious if you did any research into post-Deep Blue chess AI.

If I'm not too late to ask: After making the video, how long did you manage to convince yourself that you're going to play chess more regularly before eventually giving up? I lasted for a couple of weeks.

I had a question but horizonblue above already asked it, so I have my unrelated backup question: You have been given an unlimited budget, primetime slot, and an army of hiveminded extra Freddies to make a documentary; what do you cover that you think would be *important* to thoroughly educate a lot of people on? Also hi from 15/5/2021

Ah I have no idea what that is. They did Kasparov a dirty but at least they got something out of it outside of just being a publicity stunt x

Deep Blue was kind of a precursor to Watson, which was (and still is) a huge earner for IBM.

I recall reading that you learned chess during the research for this video. Do you still play? And if so, how well do you think you play (ELO, chess.com rating, etc.)? Looking forward to your future work!

Are there other games during the same time (1950s to the 1990s) period that computer scientists tried to master? Thank you for the content, and for the laughs on Mike's streams.

Hey Fred, absolutely adore your work. Through your research, do you believe there was ever any actual foul play at work during the match between Kasparov and Deep Blue, or did it boil down to Kasparov's anxieties?

Just want to know, how’s your day going?

This is a question I'd prefer not to answer right now. Feel free to ask another, though.

Love the work you do but hoping you will do more of the Warren's style stuff. My question is: how did your experience researching this topic impact the way you view technologies place in our sports, games and competitions?

Pandacidal maniac

Was there ever any plan to release Deep Blue commercially and let the public try their luck against it? It seems a bit of a waste to make all this effort to not find a way of making more money from it.

I would love that lmao

At the very end of the video it says: ”in memory of Spikey.” Who is this? If you don’t mind me asking.

In the video you said something along the lines of, Hsu was getting nervous that Deep Blue wasn't doing well when IBM had already spent all its good will with Kasparov. Does that mean this whole time Hsu was aware of IBM's blatant bs? Was wondering what he said about it, if he said anything about it in his book.

For some reason, I can't get the thought of "Deep Blue: The Musical" out of my head—that is, an over-the-top theatrical take on the stories of Hsu, Kasparov, and of course Deep Blue, with chess games adapted into dance numbers, a big duet for Hsu and Kasparov, lots of Blue puns for the track titles, etc etc. Would you sit through multiple hours of that, and if so, what big beats from the Deep Blue saga would you want to see retold through song and dance? (Love the video by the way, the whole DtRH creative team knocked it way outta the park <3)
