Patron Names Added to Credits; Removing $1 Tier
Added 2020-10-27 20:49:49 +0000 UTCThe new Down the Rabbit Hole is now only about a day from completion, and all of the patron names have been added to the credits. It will release either Wednesday or Thursday, assuming that YouTube plays nicely. If you pledged before yesterday evening, then your name will be in the credits of the new Down the Rabbit Hole.
After some consideration, however, I am making the difficult decision to remove the $1 tier. All patrons at $1 will still receive progress updates, but their names will not be in the credits after the new video. Nobody will be removed from the Patreon Discord server.
The reason I am doing this is unintuitive: Patreon has consistently shown that creators with a $2 tier as their lowest entry point earn significantly more because typically, a person willing to pledge $1 is willing to pledge $2. This difference, however is massive for creators; for each $2 patron, I will be receiving more than two $1 patrons because Patreon takes a smaller percentage. This adds up quickly.
I wasn't originally interested in maximizing the efficiency of Patreon, as I was simply using the money for my living expenses and asking for more felt churlish. But I'm not nearly so reliant on Patreon to put food on the table anymore, and much of the funds are now going elsewhere.
The goal of this isn't for me to make more money, but rather to allow me to commission more work for the show. For this new video, I estimate about half of my Patreon earnings went back into the show for assets such as music and illustrations, and in the future, this may increase. When I was getting started, Patreon allowed me to start making Down the Rabbit Hole full-time much earlier, but as I've gained a larger audience, it's transformed more and more into a fund from which I can pay creators for assets to improve the videos, such as I have been doing. (Nothing flashy; the pared-down aesthetic is something about DtRH that I rather like) In the long-run, this will allow me to continue incrementally increasing the quality of the show in sustainable ways.
I hope you all enjoy the new video when it drops this week; it's been quite a journey to create.
