Discord Server?

A number of my viewers have come to me now saying that they would like a Discord server for Down the Rabbit Hole. I also would like it! I use Discord all the time. If I were to do it, I would likely make it a $1 tier goal to go along with "name in the credits" as a measure to keep the trolls out. I haven't done it yet, however, for a few reasons.

First, with the limited number of people, it would be pretty quiet. If even 1/4 of my patrons joined it (a generous percentage), it would likely be slow most of the time, especially after the novelty wears off.

Second, it's kind of redundant. I'm already pretty responsive on Twitter and Patreon, and it's not hard to get a hold of me.

Still, I'm curious to hear what you all have to say, and if there are good enough arguments for it, I'm definitely willing to change my mind. Please give your thoughts!

I think a small Discord server could be fun

A Discord server would be great. Just remember to create enough chat rooms for everyone because it's going to get busy! You could also make a suggestions box on the Discord.

I like slow Discord servers and stuff. It's a good way to meet other people into your kind style of documentaries on Internet topics, a niche I haven't really seen developed. Of course, it's not just to contact you but also as a means of meeting other fans. I like a chatroom environment -- it's more personal and faster in a lot of ways.

I personally don't find it necessary, and I think discord groups for projects always end up kinda messy. Plus, like you said, it's not like you're a twitch streamer with a big chat community. I'd say just stick to what you're doing now, and if you take on more projects beyond Rabbit Hole, then look into discord. Either way keep up the fantastic work!

It's a nice idea. Find someone in your community to create it and admin it. Find trusted people to moderate it and also someone to code some bots for it. It's for community interactions between us and not just through you. Furthermore specific privileged roles with access to member chat rooms could be made for patreon supporters. Just do a monthly check up on who is a is a patreon and give the list to the mods. That way you don't have to disallow your other fans from it. Not everyone can help you with money.

I've never been part of discord servers other than small ones with friends, but I'd definitely be interested in joining if you start one.

I frequently use Discord and would regularly be on if such a server existed.

I'd love a Down the Rabbit Hole Discord! The fact it would be quieter, at least for awhile, just adds to the charm. It'd be great to just chat to people who are really into this sort of content. I'm not ultra-experienced with Discord, but I'd be happy to help mod as well.

Having myself a discord group of 200+ people, I can tell you that moderating it can be sometimes hard, although there's easy steps you can take to protect the group from trolls, I would be able to code a bot just for your server and thus allowing for better security at the "entrance" of the group. Although you seem more pre-occupied with activity in the chat more then anything, Discord is a instant messaging platform and so it's easier to send messages, as to twitter being somewhat instant, people do not tend to get notified, and making a discord could be also an easier way to advertise your uploads too. Talking with people in discord seems more personal and genuine then on twitter, mostly from the instantaneous way of communicating. Meaning even if you have not too many members, it doesn't take much to have activity in the group. Since it's mainly a server to discuss topics about your videos and all even with a few people, It would work well, and with enough security measure having it open to the public is a good idea, there's also Patreon integration meaning you could post stuff in channels on discord JUST for Patreons and lots of other things, I can help setting that up too! ^w^ If you have any other questions about it feel free to message me directly on Discord(Arcaxon#3201) too, or on twitter!

i don't really like "fast" discord servers, something about them seems kind of unfriendly. a slower server would be better for building a tight knit community, since everyone has a chance to talk.

If you do decide to go with making a server, I'd be happy to help moderate it. I'm a mod on several other servers. You can think of the server as more of a group chat sort of thing. Share pictures or news stories and have conversations with fans. It can be a more fluid conversation than Twitter or patreon comments. But ultimately it's up to you and I would see what other fans have to say :)
