I have been travelling different cities in China at intervals, for about 15 years. Just this week I have just returned from a trip encompassing several cities, including Guangzhou and Chengdu and make these fresh observations: - Television in China is much worse. It’s just full of low-brow reality shows, bad programs about Chinese armies beating Japanese armies and endless images of contemporary military parades. - The Communist Party propaganda has been turned up to 11 compared to previous trips. Signs, slogans and nationalistic flag waving are absolutely everywhere. - President Xi is marketed as a universal product that everyone must embrace with enthusiasm. - Social programming has now reached new heights. - After 2 weeks of channel-surfing Chinese news channels, I did not find a single news item about Hong King protests. - The American Trade War is being pushed as ‘‘a terrible thing America is doing to China for no reason.” - At least 80% of the internet as I know it, has been disabled. - Spitting on the street is greatly reduced. - Pedestrian crossings are still inherently dangerous places. - Chinese driving is still awful (I watched a car next to me get totalled on my way to the airport while leaving China) - Apart from rude people pushing into queues and occasional arrogant ticket booth operators, Chinese people were universally friendly and tried hard to be helpful to us. - Beer is still mostly served at room temperature. Arrgh! - Most Chinese seem to believe that America wants to attack and invade them at any moment. - 95% of all bread sold in China is still horridly sweet, with a disgusting tang. Useless for sandwiches. - The rift between the Rich and the Poor is more pronounced than ever before. (Shops sell fancy dining tables for $30,000 USD mere metres from street workers are earning maybe $100 USD per month.) - Practically no Chinese people I meet have any interest or knowledge in Chinese history. It will probably be my last trip there for the foreseeable future.

A Galah
