Video tutorial: how to install the mod and optimize Avatar for VR

Brandon has done it again! Embedded above you’ll find a thorough video explanation of how to install the R.E.A.L. VR mod (useful for those of you who are new to the Patreon, but even people who have already played with my mods can probably learn a new trick or two) and a final deep dive into the magical world of Pandora… actually, into the magical world of optimizing the game’s visible and hidden options so that the magical world of Pandora will look as good as possible in your headset.

In the video description you will find timestamps for the various sections, and even links to configuration files that Brandon prepared so that you can easily set your graphics options according to the power of your GPU.

Thank you Brandon for the wonderful job (it’s just crazy how many hours go into researching and documenting configurations in order to make a video like this).

And stay tuned, because even though the winter holidays are over, VR Santa is still going to deliver a surprise pretty soon!

Hi Luke, I just downloaded the latest v16.0.1 build for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. The ZIP I got only includes openvr_api.dll, cudart64_110.dll, RealConfig.bat, and RealRepo — but there’s no d3d11.dll. Without that file the game only launches flat. Could you please confirm if d3d11.dll should be included in this build or if it’s generated differently now? Thanks a lot for your amazing work!

Any tips on uninstalling? My game keeps crashing, I'd rather go back to flat. I uninstalled from steam and re-downloaded, but that didn't work...

Sam Strom

i have the same problem, did you a way to unistall it

Hello, I downloaded everything smoothly but now its just crashing my game, are there any directs to uninstall the mod? I'm getting worried I've caused some serious damage here. Thank you.

40fps seems like a really odd number to be locked at. Is your headset set to 90hz? 120hz? Are you using the latest Nvidia driver? If so, you could try rolling back one. Seems to be lots of driver issues lately. They just released another driver a couple days ago with some fixes.

Brandon(Post Maester)

I went through this guide and still having trouble .. what did I miss! My Vive Pro on 5090 through Steam VR is locked at 40fps in this mod. Vsync on, off, no matter, all 40FPS. Frame rate limit on, off, no matter, all 40fps. Setting the VR resolution through overlay, anywhere between 1024px and 2800px are all 40fps. Changing video settings with DLSS Performance through Quality, 40fps. Setting graphics quality between Low and Ultra, 40fps. Legacy AER? Half refresh? Third refresh? Mono? All 40fps. When using a mid setting of "High", FpsVR shows my GPU usage at around 40%, CPU at around 30%. Still only 40fps. Setting lowest possible settings, GPU goes as low as 30%, still only 40fps. Setting Unobtanium and DLAA, I can get the FPS to drop to around 30fps. But even then, both CPU and GPU usage are around 50-60%. Everything looks gorgeous and perfect, but 40fps is too low to be playable. In Star Wars Outlaws, same system gets around ~80fps at max settings. What am I missing in the setup of this game!?

It is usually a good idea to post in newer comment sections :) Any luck figuring it out? Have you tried launching the game from your monitor as well as from inside the headset. Some people have better luck doing either of those specifically for some reason. How is your Quest 2 connected? You are not using SteamVR at all right?

Brandon(Post Maester)

Hi! I just downloaded the mod to use for AFOP for the first time. I unblocked the folder and put the files in the executable’s folder then ran the config file like in the video, but when I connect my headset and launch the game it just stays in the questlink environment and only plays the sound through the headset. I'm using a Quest 2 and I have AFOP on Ubisoft. I tried using WMR like in another comment but it's deprecated in my windows version.

Yort

Don't use SteamVR, just set WMR as your OpenXR runtime and use OpenXR. Check the game settings and make sure the display settings are correct. Also make sure you don't have frame gen or any settings like that turned on. If you want to put a copy of your RealVR64.log file on pastebin and post a link here, I can take a look.

Help! Avatar now only starts in 2D (G2 Steam version) I first suspected a runtime error because I played DCS after a long break and that's the reason why I use Open Compostit, OpenXR + Toolkit. I normaly only have to deactivate the toolkit for any other REAL game and change the API as needed. CP2077 for example runs with both. But in genreral i prefer OXR if possible because of better performance. Avatar was always a bit tricky to start in VR (in contrast to CP e.g.) I suspected the Ubisoft loading stuff? I also can´t remember the used API for AFOP but i remember sometimes a bit WIN+Y, Alt+Tab... WMR stuff... to get it on my G2. Steam always started automatically, but not SteamVR itself, this had to be off anyway, but then it worked like a charm! Now nothing works anymore. I've tried it >20 times swiching the 2 runtimes via "OpenComposit runtime switcher" and checked in SteamVR/Settings/OpenXR. Either SteamVR or WMR(G2) nothing kicks VR in. I don't know what to do anymore. New 17.0.. RealConfig.bat.. Keep/Delete... only 2D (sound goes to HMD)! My G2 remains trapped in the WMR house or SteamVR house (although it didn't start from the SteamVR environment before either (see above).

What rendering mode are you using? 100-140 sounds about right for this game depending on where you are, your frame rate and what rendering mode you are using. Is your controller wireless or do you have any other controller or input devices plugged in besides mouse and keyboard? Any other gaming or performance software running? FPS tracker, Nvidia App overlay, Riva Tuner etc.

Brandon(Post Maester)

Hi, I recently built a PC specifically to play Avatar. My setup is: GPU: 4090 CPU: 9800X3D RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 Quest 3 link cable The game looks amazing in VR, but no matter what I do, even if the frame rate is high, for some reason, whenever I look around using the right stick on my game controller, it is incredibly bad, like if the frame rate were 10 FPS. When I'm running or looking around with the headset, everything is fine; it's only when I use the right stick to look around that everything looks distorted and extremely bad, even though the FPS is high. I've noticed I always have high latency (140 to 100 ms minimum). Is this normal with this mod?

Just download the latest from the Indiana release post or the pinned welcome Patreon post. 16.2 Watch the install video if you need help installing it. Same version should work with any supported game.

Just became member how do I get mods

John

I think someone said they changed the aspect ratio in the game settings, and they were able to see them, then switch back after you are done. Something like that. If I disable Hfov I can also see them somewhat better, but they are not totally off the screen for me to begin with.

Brandon(Post Maester)

I find 72 at 1/2 to be much better than 90 at 1/3. Less artifacts and trails, etc. A more powerful CPU would probably help with stability, but this game can still have major dips in areas. Definitely harder on performance than Cyberpunk. Have you watched the performance video yet? You can try disabling some of the things there to increase stability.

Brandon(Post Maester)

Anyone got any advice on reducing stuttering for Avatar? I seem to be getting bad stuttering on ppd over 20 for this game, even if I lower all the graphics settings it seems to kick in on anything above that. It happens a little bit at 20 but above it’s constant. I have an rtx4080 but a 4 year old i7 processor so wondering if it’s a CPU bottleneck. Maybe there are some CPU intensive things I could reduce to alleviate it and get the resolution up? Cyberpunk I have at 26 ppd and it runs buttery smooth with most settings on high without ray tracing. Feels like I should be able to get more ppd on this game! Also, I’m running them at 90hz at 1/3 but get similar performance at 72hz 1/2.

Sorry if this has been covered: in the skill unlock screen, it seems that some of the late skills to unlock (at the farther ends of some branches) are outside the rectangular area/screen boundaries. Is there a workaround?
