Hotfix for 60 fps cap (NVIDIA cards)

This is an emergency release to work around an issue that is ruining the mod experience in VR for many of you.

There seems to be a bug in recent NVIDIA drivers that severely limits the performance of windowed applications. The driver is erroneously forcing V-Sync on, even if the application explicitly asked for an uncapped frame rate. That results in serious ghosting/jitter/judder in the best case, and can also lead to the eye images randomly being drawn out of place or even swapped. As you know, that very quickly leads to motion sickness in VR.

The specific scenarios that trigger the bug are still a bit unclear. From the reports I have received, and from my own personal experiments, several different factors appear to be involved:

and possibly other, yet undiscovered ones.

I don't expect this bug to be fixed anytime soon by NVIDIA, as it only affects windowed applications, and it's pretty hard to reproduce. Luckily there is a workaround, which is to force V-Sync off in the driver itself, either globally or for each specific game.

This release adds a component to RealConfig which will automatically take care of implementing the workaround in case you have an NVIDIA card. If you are affected by the bug, download the archive below to update your R.E.A.L. VR installation, and remember to run RealConfig again: it will tweak the driver profile for the game to make sure that the game runs with V-Sync off (as it should).

Should you later want to play the game in pancake mode and with V-Sync activated, just open the NVIDIA Control Panel, navigate to "Manage 3D settings" and then to the "Program Settings" tab, and find the game you'd like to play flat. Restore its default profile to allow V-Sync again.

The only other change in this release is a minor fix for CP2077 that allows you to play Roach Race in VR.

Hope this helps all of you who have been affected by this nasty issue!!!

Update 1: it seems that forcing V-Sync off in the driver is preventing Cyberpunk 2077 from starting altogether for some of you. I just hate these driver quirks. Anyway, if you have this problem, you should be able to undo the changes very easily: open the NVIDIA Control Panel, navigate to "Manage 3D settings" and then to the "Program Settings" tab, and find Cyberpunk 2077 in the list. Press "Restore" and then after confirming the warning press "Apply" otherwise the restore won't, erm, apply. Of course that will leave you once more with the 60 fps cap issue if you suffered from it before. In the next few days we'll try together to find a solution that works for everybody.

Update 2: I suspect the freeze at startup might be due to the launcher. If you're affected, please try adding "--launcher-skip -skipStartScreen" without the quotes to your launch options and let me know if that changes anything!

Update 3: It seems that my hotfix is causing problems for several people, who can no longer launch the game(s) at all, even in 2D. To avoid further problems, I reverted the link below to the previous version of the mod. I absolutely cannot reproduce the freeze-at-start issue here however, so I need a few volunteers to help me get to the root cause. If you have an NVIDIA system that was affected by both problems (60 fps cap with 8.0.1, games not launching with 8.1.0), you're good with computers, and you have plenty of time to spare, please get in touch with me in the comments below or with a DM. The "plenty of time" part is crucial, because these kind of problems that involve the drivers can only be diagnosed with lots of reboots, reinstallations, tweaks and blind tries :-(

Update 4: Okay, I should have nailed the issue that was causing the games to freeze at launch for some of you. Apparently one of the latest Windows updates must have tightened security around driver profiles, with the result that a simple operation that used to succeed now silently fails, and what's worse is that it leaves the profile in an inconsistent state. That inconsistent state is what was preventing the games from creating the Direct3D device at startup. Anyway, please download the new 8.2.0 release attached below and update. When you run RealConfig after the update, it will fix the broken profile and also force V-Sync to off as expected. Remember that each game needs a separate installation, as RealConfig only modifies the specific game profile and doesn't touch the global driver settings.

i hope First Calisto Protocol will be well optimised to try it on VR

RainyFaz

YEAH ! First Calisto Protocol - die of few heart attacks, recover , then Dead Space

Tomo

Deadspace Remake with a Luke Ross VR Mod😏

RainyFaz

Yep. DL2 would be nice, however Scorn would be spectacular, however no big hopes due to performance (however they announced FSR 2.1 to be introduced soon).

Nuclear.Penguin

Would have been a good Halloween choice. Dying Light 2 would have also been a great Halloween release :)

Brandon(Post Maester)

Scorn would be sick

If you are trying to get RDR2 to work, it is no longer officially supported here because Luke was forced to stop supporting mods for Take Two Interactive games by the company itself. There is a down grader for the REAL mod on the Flat2VR discord but I don't know if it still works currently since the games have had updates since then. You might be able to roll back the game version on Steam and use the mod down grader there to get RDR2 working but Luke does not offer technical support for things like that here. If you are not on the Flat2VR discord it is a great place to get help with things like this.

Brandon(Post Maester)

I joined VR firends mostly for RDR2 i was directed here from install guide... any more tips for creative search ? (newbie here). TBH cant find any other mod than Cyber

Divives

Please read the sticky post at the top: https://www.patreon.com/posts/start-here-68859691 Unfortunately, RDR2 isn't supported at this time due to the DMCA notice Luke received.

im confused where is the red dead redemption file?????????? plz help

loco playz

That's hard to tell for sure, but usually these issues are caused by crapware that comes preinstalled or auto-downloads to the new machine. Typical suspects are RGB lighting utilities, overlays of various kinds, audio enhancers and the such. You might want to use a program like LatencyMon (https://www.resplendence.com/latencymon) to try and find out the culprit

LukeRoss

Hey running into a stuttering issue in final fantasy 7, The game was running perfect on my rtx 3080 desktop, but recently I got an alienware desktop with a 3090 and every few seconds the game kind of freezes for half a sec. The setup is pretty much the same how I installed it on my other machine and same graphics settings. Could it be an issue with the 3090 running on the latest driver or maybe some Alienware overlay thats slowing things down? I have framerate limited to 90 as its whats supported on my headset and see framerate pretty constant on that. I tried to reinstall, same issue.

Christopher Pamieta

Maybe its because the website wont let you actually buy them. I tried for 40 mins, timeoutsx10 at all 7 stages of the process. Got one though

Boat Kettle Cheese

:) people trying to scalp 4090s when you can still find a couple online every time I have looked. Not going to fly this gen. Hope they get a flat tire on their way to return it after it doesn't sell.

Brandon(Post Maester)

Make sure you are putting the files in the same folder as the actual .exe location. Should be something like FFVII/end/binaries/win64 The first .exe file in the main folder is not the correct one.

Brandon(Post Maester)

I did the set up as mentioned but it said ERROR: This folder does not seem to belong to any of the supported games. Please make sure that the mod zip archive is extracted to the very same folder where the main game executable is found, and not for example into a subfolder. I am using FF7 epic version. Wondering if there is something different about epic

Ding Yangtian

That sounds like a low performance issue. Does it go away if you decrease resolution/settings to get better performance?

Brandon(Post Maester)

I havnt updated to this version yet but can this possibly be the reason why I get black borders when lookin around quickly or is it something else ?

jamie richards

Hey Micheal, what are your specs? Did you remember to turn off Steam theatre mode? Any errors from RealConfig?

LukeRoss

Hi Thom! It's a bit hard to tell, because you captured the desktop window instead of the mod's output, but it looks like your system is missing frames.

LukeRoss

Spidey should be coming at some point but I don't know if that is next. He seemed interested in the fact that Ark already has broken VR support so could be an easy one. Plus he just did a couple UE4 ones which makes it even easier probably. I am both wishing that one does and does not happen :( could put some serious strain on my marriage. Luke has been full of surprises lately, so who knows :)

Brandon(Post Maester)

Any clues on what the next one will be Luke?

WIG

Yup, the halo is from TAA and AER. You can lessen the effect with higher fps somewhat or switch to mono. I personally put the world scale up to 5x to lessen it. This will move things more towards a mono type view but not all the way and obviously make things larger and look odd at first. I got used to it pretty quickly and it makes things look more cinematic for me. It actually looks really weird for me to go back down, things look tiny. I can get things very clear with reshade but that makes the shimmering really stand out and I just can't stand it so I play this way. It is a good middle option to have if you still want some 3d and less shimmer.

Brandon(Post Maester)

For me it`s unplayable with Ryzen 7 3700x and 3080Ti card, tried every combination with DLSS, resolution upscaling and more, but there is a weird halo that sorrounds every object, don`t know if this is normal or has anything to do with my hp reverb G2/configuration.

Iker

game runs flat on airlink, i can never get the vr to start rendering :(

Michael Lee

I was going through the same issue... But v8.2.0 is work fine!!! :)

yaong75

It seems to be that way, I just restored everything before the last windows and gpu update from Nvida. Was also causing other VR games to run rather poorly with windows also having some sort of conflict with errors regards to driver hardware. Seems like the best fix for now is just to restore the system back if all else fails.

Gray

I really do wonder if its more a driver issue, cause I never updated cyberpunk from a few versions back and still have had quite a bit more TAA shimmer/double outline issues as well as crashes.. I only updated my Nvidia driver, windows and cyberpunk itself lately. Also started using FSR 2.1 but the TAA issue was actually much better when I first started using it and then worse after updating gpu driver. If I have time tomorrow I will try rolling back my driver and see if that changes things.

Brandon(Post Maester)

Hello! Trying to get the mod to work again but it seems to only starts the game with 72fps and then goes right to 0 FPS just after the opening screen and just doesn't work in the quest 2 with Vitural Desktop but did before. I spent probably like 3-4 trying hours and even tried most to all the advice on here as well as going into the files, etc, etc... running off a 3060ti and an AMD Ryzen 7 5800 8-Core Processor 3.40 GHz and even went as far as adjusting settings in flat screen mode after changing the dxgi file to bak (runs fine in flat screen no issues). At this point not really sure how to fix to make it run on vr without the fps crashing to 0 after start up and preventing the game to run past the opening title screen Once it gets to the main menu with the opening cut scenes it crashes the fps and just freezes and will flatline. I also did try the new patch and applied it, but still no luck. (Windows 11 home) UPDATE! Pretty sure it was an issue with the latest GPU update... I restored everything back before any updates and now running CP on high graphics in VR with a stable 90 FPS!

Gray

I'm still having the issue - thought I'd try out Stray to see if it was game-specific, but it's not. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SScTVeF2QY0 I really want this to work - I'm happy to be the guinea pig if you need me :)

Thom Bray

I simply can't wait to see what DLSS 3.0 does for these games. At the very least it should help with monoscopic modes.

D S

8.2 fixed the issue for me. My game launches fine now. Thanks!!!

Joe Koch

My problem was exactly as described, after installing the 8.0.2. vr version I had no way to start the cp2077 game. Nvidia 517.40 driver ,RTX2070s , win10, 64bit (21H1) ReviOS ver. Currently it works with the 8.0.1 vr version.

Cadaverland Cadaverass from

Are you sure it's Vsync? Nvidia has a completely separate setting which limits max framerate to a specific number and the default is 60. The setting is called "Max Frame Rate". Since trying 8.1 once, I can't get Cyberpunk to start, even after reverting to a lower version of the mod. Including 7.3. I see these lines in a crash report: [MAIN ] | INFO | Redirecting CreateDXGIFactory2(Flags = 0x80000000, riid = {1BC6EA02-EF36-464F-BF0C-21CA39E5168A}, ppFactory = 000000F69E9FCEB0) ... I would to volunteer to help test, but I literally only have one week free before I move house and my PC will be packed up any day now. I hope you guys can get it sorted. I want to say on the topic of support though, that Luke has been extremely helpful to me when I had problems a few weeks ago, always replying to my messages and offering assistance. his dedication to us and the mod is beyond question.

Mark Pickford

I am still on version 7.2 since having problems a couple of weeks ago, unrelated to this particular problem. (Win11 latest version fully updated, RTX and latest NV driver)Everything is working fine for me, so I haven’t tried any REALVR updates since the 7.2 version because hey, if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it 🤪. I am only playing CP2077 at this time.

Mark Pickford

This last mod version kills stray game for me...I couldn't launch it anymore...I spent 2 hours to find how to restore the game... i restore the default settings in Nvidia control panel (3D parameters) and then , i could play the game again

tonino valdes

I was able to return to 2D gameplay by following your directions on resetting Cyberpunk 2077 via the NVidia control panel and then renaming the files in AppData and the game folder...

Guys, if you have the issue where the game doesn't launch anymore with 8.1.0, please put your exact Windows version in the comments, as I have reason to think that the problem could depend on that

LukeRoss

Hehe, that's real funny, considering that this release was needed only to counteract a bug in the NVIDIA drivers. Perhaps they're the ones who would need a proper QA team. I kind of resent your tone. The mod doesn't "mess around at such a deep level that the only way to revert it is to reinstall the graphics drivers". I explained exactly in the post what version 8.1.0 did: it updated the driver profile for the game (using the official NVIDIA API and no hacks, by the way) to force V-Sync off, nothing more. As verified by other users, there was no need to reinstall the driver to roll back the changes, just restore the profile as explained in my post. That said, I'm obviously sorry for the fact that the hotfix didn't work for everybody. What is your exact version of Windows? Did you try adding the launch options that I suggested in Update 2?

LukeRoss

Did you follow the uninstall instructions exactly? i.e. restore your original UserSettings.json and remove dxgi.dll

David

Windows Event Viewer shows me two entries, one warning and one error: Warning: "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered." Error: "The description for Event ID 0 from source nvlddmkm cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer."

David

CP77 has been completely messed up. I uninstalled the mod and reinstalled my graphic drivers but I still have no way of launching the game. Is there anything else I can try to fix this?

Aidan

As noted in this thread by others, 8.1.0 totally bricked my installs of the games where I installed it (Stray and CP77). Not only the games would no longer start but trying to revert the mod to an older version or get rid of it altogether failed.. .the games would no longer start at all. Resetting the NVidia settings for those games didn't help either. As someone else pointed out, the only way to get out of this is to reinstall the NVidia drivers. I would really appreciate it if the mod didn't mess around at such a deep level that the only way to revert it is to reinstall the graphics drivers. I don't want to risk messing up my entire VR setup just for this mod. I don't mean to sound like a jerk, since I really appreciate all the work you've done, but I think we're getting to a point where this mod needs a proper QA team to check things out... as more and more games are supported, it's becoming unmanageable for a single person to check whether everything still works after every single game update or driver update...

FlyingWaffle

same for me, totally bricked my installs of Stray and CP... no matter what I do (trying to install an older version of the mod, reset NVidia settings), they no longer start. All other VR stuff works, including games with older version of the mod.

This update breaks Cyberpunk for me as well. The only way I could get it to start launching again is by reinstalling the Nvidia drivers. Reinstalling v8.1.0 causes it to stop launching again. Then I have to reinstall the driver again. I've tried v7.3.0 and v8.0.1, while the game launches, it never display fully on my Quest 2. If I look at the desktop within SteamVR I see the game running and it's tracking my head movement. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Termus

You can use a gamepad instead :)

Brandon(Post Maester)

Tried using the launch options but the game won't launch. Cyberpunk2077.exe runs and it shows up in Task Manager but the game never appears. EDIT: Uninstalled 8.1.0 and went to 8.0.1, game launches fine.

David

It feels much better than before, thanks. But - I still get jumping frames and weird things while moving/walking/entering a new place and etc.. so hard to play like that. and also - cant we use the quest 2 controllers instead keyboard? the shooting is too hard and annoying like that.

Dronix

without the Launcher it will start and everything is fine :-) thanks for the great mod! I am using RX6900XT and direct start Cyberpunk2077.exe

johno

That must be why Spiderman Remastered in VR suddenly stopped crashing on me. The latest driver was released (I think) on Monday or Tuesday.

d0x360

I have no idea unfortunately

LukeRoss

Can you elaborate on which specific Nvidia driver version the break starts with, I feel like for now the easiest thing might be to rollback.

drowhunter

This broke my cyberpunk. Says game is running, but isnt anywhere.

Shockwave

Yes, for all games, and yes, exactly the same as doing it manually in the driver. Just a convenience and hopefully helpful for users who didn't know about the bug

LukeRoss

A mod will definitely get released for it :-P

LukeRoss

This fix is for all games or some in particular? Wouldnt it be the same as to go to 3D settings and turning off vaync there globally?

Tomo

Side note, Spiderman Remastered is available on cdkeys for 39.49. Just picked up a copy for the future :) can always play with superdepth3d if a mod doesn't get released for it.

Brandon(Post Maester)

I am having the same issue as well. I was able to launch Cyberpunk without problem with 8.0.0. I updated to 8.1.0 and the game won't launch anymore. I can see the process Cyberpunk2077.exe running and stay idle. I tried these without success: - Just wait (eventually flatline after 2/3 minutes with error "Message: Watchdog timeout! (120 seconds)") - Running again the RealConfig.bat and deleting previous profile - Reverting back to 8.0.0 - Renaming dxgi.dll to launch the game flat - Removing entirely all the files of REAL VR mod (I can't even see Cyberpunk2077.exe running) - Running without any mods - Repairing the game in GoG - Reinstalling the game in GoG EDIT - SOLUTION I confirm that the solution provided in UPDATE 1 worked for me, by restore the program settings of Cyberpunk 2077 in the NVIDIA control panel.

Sammy Barras

Thanks for more hot fixes !

Mark Ashton

Same as JM. Uninstalled and reinstalled CP then this update again and it still won't launch. Nothing happens for a few minutes then I get the CP 2077 flatlined message. Will uninstall again and try 8.0.1 which I was using before but experiencing some of those issues. Completely uninstalling and deleting the install folder the reinstalling with 8.0.1 again fixed it for me. Turned off v-sync for CP in the NVIDIA control panel to see if that helps.

Joe Koch

Wasn't having any problems before, but just upgraded to this from 7.2 and now cyberpunk won't launch at all, even after reverting to 7.2, disabling all other mods, etc. Will try deleting and reinstalling the whole game to see if I can get it to launch totally unmodded, right now the whole game is toast. EDIT: Seems I'm not the only one with this issue. It's going to take several hours to finish downloading the re-install files :*( Once it's done I'll try going back to 7.2 and let you know if it works again.

JMSlider

Thanks Luke. I also fixed this earlier this week by swapping monitors. Not a solution for everyone but I had a 120 Hz monitor at my work station and when I swapped that with the 60 Hz monitor I had on my gaming PC it upped the cap in VR to match the 120 Hz. Not really a solve but maybe that is one more data point to what is going on. Either way I am going to go install this 8_1_0 now!

Matthew Dickerson

Merci Luke.... effectivement depuis quelques jours je tourne à 60 FPS sur cyberpunk2077 sans comprendre pourquoi....
