Release 7.1.0 supports Ghostwire: Tokyo!
Added 2022-09-05 10:22:54 +0000 UTC
7.2.0 update: Release 7.2.0, attached at the bottom of this post, fixes all VR-related problems introduced by the Edgerunners Update (1.6) that came out yesterday for Cyberpunk 2077. It also solves a regression in my VR conversion for Horizon: Zero Dawn that was making the crosshair appear very close to your eyes, instead of placing it at the correct depth in the world. I'm aware about the binoculars issue in Ghostwire: Tokyo; I will try to fix it too, but for the moment you can play that segment (and in general any portions of the game that should give you trouble in VR) by ticking the "Force 2D virtual screen" checkbox in the "GWT" tab of my overlay.
7.1.1 update: In release 7.1.0 I disabled motion blur for the game (as it doesn't work correctly in VR and smears the image), but I didn't realize that my patch was also affecting other things. Kudos to the Patrons who noticed that screen-space reflections were not working. The faulty patch is also the likely reason why some of you were noticing no performance drops when enabling ray tracing: it wasn't actually getting enabled!
All of that is fixed in the new release 7.1.1, attached below, which also introduces another important upgrade: the mod now has experimental support for the PS5 DualSense controller! So you can play the game with haptics and adaptive triggers enabled, and still be able to open and navigate the mod overlay with the gamepad.
I'm also aware that the mod for Cyberpunk 2077 has been broken by today's big update to game version 1.6. I will work to fix it, but I can't provide an ETA yet. Finally, thanks for your enthusiasm and the overwhelmingly positive reception for the GW:T mod!!!
I'm really loving this game :-) As I wrote in my previous post, the gameplay and graphics are a perfect fit for VR. It begins perhaps a bit slowly, with lots of cutscenes and story setting, and for a while it looks as if you will be confined to a specific area, being told what to do and where to go every step of the way. Don't be fooled by that, as it's only basically the tutorial level.
Very soon the game opens up, and when it does, the city starts to feel like a huge playground where everything is possible. It's just amazing, and as you can see from the beautiful video above by Eurogamer's paladin of VR, Ian Higton, Tokyo has been recreated so well that if you've ever been there the game will give you pangs of nostalgia, and if you haven't, it will make you seriously consider a trip!
Quick Setup instructions
The steps are the same as with my previous mods; if you're a returning user, you'll only need to be careful to extract the mod into the correct folder.
- Make sure that the game was run flat (i.e., not in VR) at least once, so that it could create your user profile.
- Unzip the archive attached at the bottom of this post into the folder where "OpenImageDenoise.dll" and "GWT.exe" are. On a standard Steam installation the folder will be at "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Ghostwire Tokyo\Snowfall\Binaries\Win64". When you extract the zip, be careful to preserve the folder structure. In other words, don't move anything around manually, don't flatten the folders, and don't put the mod into its own subfolder: RealConfig.bat must end up at the same level as OpenImageDenoise.dll. If you are returning to this post to update to a new release, you might be asked whether to overwrite existing files, in which case you should answer yes to all.
- Run RealConfig, which will automatically select graphics settings known to work correctly in VR and finish installing/configuring the mod for you. NOTE: if you omit this step or ignore any errors that the batch file reports back to you, the mod won't work correctly, even if you are just upgrading from a previous release.
- Note that there is another folder, three levels up, which contains an executable that is unfortunately also called GWT.exe. That is not the main executable, it's only the launcher (you can see it's less than 1 MB in size). The folder you want is the one with a path ending in "Binaries\Win64", with an executable of about 90 MB.
Resolutions and additional notes
Usually for my mods I coax the games into accepting square (1:1) resolutions, like 2160x2160 for example, because it's the aspect ratio that best fits the most commonly used headsets. For Ghostwire: Tokyo however I had to fall back to 5:4 resolutions, because below that aspect ratio the game's HUD breaks and becomes unreadable. So, after running RealConfig, you will find that the game starts for the first time with a resolution of 2700x2160. You can change that according to your specs, remembering that you want to keep a frame rate of at least 60-70 fps for a good VR experience. Do not select the traditional 16:9 resolutions (1280x720 and 1920x1080) unless you want to play pancake.
The game offers lots of scalability options, and they all work correctly in VR (except for motion blur, which I hard-disabled in the renderer). You can experiment with the various combinations, and you should find that performance is generally quite good for such an impressive looking open-world game. Depending on your system, and perhaps using an upscaling technique like DLSS, you might even be able to hit the 180 fps needed for R.E.A.L. VR without any AER artifacts!
Other games
I'm constantly evolving my framework, in an effort to make all the mods run as well as possible on all hardware and software combinations out there. Sometimes that can introduce regressions though, and in particular with the previous 6.1.0 release I received several reports of crashes at start (or the game refusing to enter VR) with H:ZD and CP2077. If you were one of the affected users, and had to revert to 5.1.0, I would kindly ask you to try out this 7.1.0 release on the games in question to see whether it fixes the issues for you.
Happy ghost hunting!!!
hi all, the game is extremely blurry, I isntalled the mod with the engine.ini from nexus mod it removed the grain but it is still blurry as hell, any advice please ?

Ghostwire: I have run the game twice and saved. I've tried v9.7 and v10.2.1 on Ghostwire for Steam in the Snowfall\Binaries\Win64 folder and when running the RealConfig.bat file both tell me I haven't run the game. What am I doing wrong?

I will also join in on Ghostwire Tokyo enquiry. I've downloaded via gamepass, where do I drop the mod files? As OpenImageDenoise.dll does not exist, only can find GWT in Binaries folder.

I'll second this one as OpenImageDenoise.dll doesn't seem to exist in the Game Pass version (The path being Binaries\WinGDK instead of Binaries\Win64), and GTW.exe weighting at about 365MB.

Sorry Sandor, I don't often scroll down this far. It is best to post questions in the main Start Here post or somewhere near the top so I am sure to see them. It sounds like it could be an issue with LOD and distant lower Res textures. There is also the haloing from TAA and AER but that is somewhat present in most games. It could also be from the sharpening sliders in the newer releases of Real that Luke added, if deblur is all the way up it could be over sharpening things.

Hello. I'm having a strange visual phenomenon with this Ghostwire Tokyo and also Horizon Zero Dawn. None of the other REAL mods I tried (around 6-7 of them) does this, and it occures in both Pico 4 and Oculus Quest 2 via Virtual Desktop. The mentioned 2 games have this shimmering or super-noise/grain effect in VR (on monitor they do not). Additionally, Horizon have this so much (or might be a different issue), that mid-far static objects seem like they would vibrate/move around minimally.

Are you far into the game? Some people reported that the map crashed for them in later levels (might have something to do with the number of icons being displayed)

Make sure you put the files from the REAL mod folder into GhostwireTokyo/Snowfall/bin/x64 where the actual game .exe file is. Then run Realconfig.bat If you have already done that, is the game starting but not in VR? Is it crashing? Getting an error message?

I'm largely able to play Cyberpunk 2077 again. However, it keeps crashing when I enter any braindance. I see the white screen, hear the braindance loading sound, then POOF, back in my SteamVR Home and my desktop has a nice little Cyberpunk crash report. Unfortunately, those are all mandatory in order to proceed with the plot.
Also, it crashes any time I enable photo mode. In the meantime, I remapped the key so I don't accidentally hit it.
UPDATE: Taking over cameras crashes it too.

Yup, now that i have things looking good visualy(for my taste) I am having a good time. Would be nice to have some more enemy types but the few yoki I have run into so far have been really fun to examine up close. Do wish they did a better job on the animal textures also. Special FX are great once you get some good color contrast to make them pop.

Awesome mods Luke :) Played cyberpunk 2077 and tried some of your older mods like RDR2 and have worked fine with the VR mods. But Tokyo ghostwire keeps entering virtual desktop mode. I can look around and move but the game is in virtual desktop mode. I also ran it in flat before trying the VR mode to get a save file. Let me know if you have any solutions. Hi Luke, everyone, .. I will start of with a huge thank you Luke for your VR mods, loving them!
Ok, after trying Ghostwire the game loads up and plays just fine in my headset, took a few mins to dial in the graphics to find the sweet spot, but when I either pause the game or hit the menu button my headset goes black. I can still see the game on my TV. Is it supposed to be this way (that I have to take my headset off to see the pause and/or the inventory screens) ? Or am I doing something wrong ?
I am using a Steam version of the game and my headset is a Vive Cosmos Elite.
Really looking forward to getting into the game but just wanted to know if this is normal. Obviously if it is meant to be this way then I will just deal with it :)
Thanks in advance to anyone who replies =)

It looks pretty likely that they will not be releasing the 40 series until next year according to an investor phone conversation. They have lowered prices down to get the 30 series where they want them to be so they can sell there along with the 40 series. The used market is still an unknown as far as if prices will come down even further there. 40 series pricing is likely to be high on release and start with the 4090. Jenson said in the call that they are getting the market where they want it over the next "couple quarters" so probably start with the 4090 quarter 2 of next year. Just depends on if you want to hold on for another 4-6 months possibly to get better VR performance at probably a high cost. Of course you have AMD that may launch sooner and be worth waiting for. I am skipping the 40 and hoping a lot of people do so Invidia does not think they can get away with driving prices up.

Played on i7-8700, 16GB RAM, GTX 1070Ti with a Valve Index (90Hz refresh rate, Motion Smoothing on). Observations are as follows:
- As usual, I underestimated that while I could run this flatscreen, VR was a tougher beast. I had to drop into the 2100/1800 level resolution (from the default 2700) to get a relatively stable framerate. The graphics are muddier, but the core gameplay and experience are still there.
I did try to bump it up to the 4100 level of resolution to get a 'taste' of better graphics, and I did, at about a rate of 1 frame/5 seconds.
In case anybody was wondering why I'm playing on such a low power card: I was ready to buy a 3000 series card a couple months back, but heard rumors about a potential 4000 card release in October. I'd figure I would wait to see pricing on the 3000 series compared to the 4000 before taking the leap.
- Even with the diminished graphics, it is still a fun time, although I'll be honest it would be more enjoyable with better graphics.
Probably the most depressing aspect of the VR implementation is that physically turning throws off your joystick orientation (reminding me of an older VR game, the Persistence). It was because of my ability to aim with my head that I got carried away in thinking I could physically turn, and still have it work.
- I haven't tried playing with the VR options to see if there is any option to improving performance (e.g., like AER).
Thanks as always for bringing more games into the VR 'fold'. This one was eay to get into because I found the game on sale for about $25.

Anyone else have the screen detach when using performance mode for DLSS or FSR? I just get a window. Anything above that works fine. Also, here is a fun selection of Luts to try out, I am digging 50s postcard, really makes things stand out nicely. Theres a bunch of cinematic ones too and should cost no performance since they are Luts. https://reshade.me/forum/shader-presentation/5656-movies-color-grading-pack-multilut

I checked here with all resolutions up to the max and the map doesn't crash for me. But I can tell you this: while fixing the game for the update, I discovered that both the map menu and the mirror menu where you change your appearance have the nasty habit of allocating new full-resolution video buffers every 5 frames. (That is just something you never do in a production game.) So, the issue might be that with high resolutions those menus make your card run out of VRAM. How much do you have?

hmm 7.2.0 doesn't fix anything in CP2077 for me, it still runs horribly (when it was all fine before they updated it, even with an old version of real vr). It's not like a framerate issue, it looks as if some retroprojection technique was going bonker and the two eye views get wobbly and out of synch. and the head tracking is lagging, and once a while the whole thing freezes for one second (the VR buffer frozen in place).
Updating to the latest nvidia drivers didn't help.
Anyway, I'm done for now, don't want to waste another night on this...

there's a section in the game where you can't progress without the up-down axis from the controller: in the binocular section you can't move the binoculars using the head movement. Maybe this is a good time to enable the Y Axis as a temporary movement? I'll reiterate my arguments here, for visibility:
I've played other mods that would let you use the up-down joystick to look up, and I had no troubles at all. It could be very convenient for situations when you have to look up for a longer time. HZD, for instance, tends to be very... hilly :). I know it's VR and we're supposed to look around freely, but as an option it would be nice to have, for those who have stronger VR legs. I'm also thinking it could be an accessibility tool for persons who really need that. It could even be something temporary, as looking up with the controller only while moving the joystick up and then automagically realign to the normal view

Here is my set of files. All of those are in there but there is a lot of others also. My preset is in there also if you want to try it. I fixed it yesterday, I had added some blue tint before. I tried to make it as light as possible in terms of fps hit and just fixing the colors while staying with the games look. I traded out CAS for Filmic Sharpen because they both cost a few fps and Filmic does a better overall job in my opinion. Luke, tried to copy shaders into your Shaders Folder where the CAS.fx file is located.
I copied the new shaders in, but they failed to load..
Curves
Fake HDR
Lumasharp
Tonemap
Vibrance
The Log says:(431, 405) preprocessor error: unterminated string ...
(1691, 175)
any tip how to make them load correctly in the RESHADE TAB?

He fixed reflections and ray tracing, they are actually active in the game now. Did you have Ray Tracing on? I was wondering when people were playing at so high Res with Ray Tracing and still getting high FPS.

How come i can play with 7.1.0 at max resolution at 4900 with solid 80 fps
But same with 7.1.1 i get 20 fps at 4900 ,unplayable , if you just turned off motion blur 🧐

Hey Luke. Don't know if this is just me but when I enable DLSS, the game starts crashing my HMD. I'm using WMR. I'm fine playing without it but just wanted to make you aware, and like I said it could just be something on my end.

I just saw your video, it looks totally different to my game , I have RT off and still good 'reflections' obviously milky and not sharp like with real RT but still very nice and nothing like in your video where you literally have close to none, almost dry pavements with some puddles... odd.

Don't know if it's the newest mod version or update 1.6 but performance bacame a big hit in Cyberpunk 2077. Lost about 20fps not matter what settings.
Ok tested it and it's the mod itself. Installed 5.1.0 and there I have my old FPS back. Something seems to kill performance in the newest mod version. At least for CP2077.

With the 7.1.0 mod I assume SSAO / SSGI were disabled as well.
I installed the 7.1.1 version and indeed now all works how it should be and its worst in my opinion..
When I say worst its really heavy on the performance with RT ON, at 3040x2432 its down to 55 FPS and 90 FPS without RT.
I achieved 90FPS with 7.1.0 at 4340x3472!
In lower resolution everything looks really blurry and pixelated, even worst with lower res if I want to keep RT at higher FPS than 55.
In my opinion not worth the hassle as the RT is not so much of a very important visual difference (for me anyway) but a heavy FPS killer in that game.
Rolled back to 7.1.0 and enjoying the glorious super sharp 4900x3920 @ 80 FPS (with DLSS Quality)! cant beat that.

Thank you for the thorough testing and the video! Yep, it turns out that the patch I made to forcibly disable Motion Blur affects other things too. That's probably why people have been reporting great performance even with ray tracing enabled... I will make a new release ASAP that either disables the patch or fixes it so that it only kills Motion Blur as intended.

Super cool! This game is just created for VR, thank you!
But I still hope to see Mad Max or maybe Exodus Metro in the future. I really want to see some kind of post-apocalyptic open world game in VR :)

Hi Luke,
Regarding Reshade. I see in the Win64 Folder that now we have there the Reshade-Shaders Folder
with the SHADERS subfolder. Inside is the CAS.fx shader, which I can see and access in the overlay in the game.
If I want to add now other shaders (e.g Fake HDR, lightroom etc), do I just drag and drop these into the SHADERS folder
where the CAS.fx one is? thats it? so simple?
And these would be then accessible in the overlay I assume then as well, right?
2.
I did not check but I can imagine all your games add the Reshade-Shaders Folder, so for all games
it would be that easy as just drag and drop the desired shaders into the existing SHADER Folder, right?

Nice. Good thing I haven't finished it yet. Good time to play again.
I activated ray tracing but it seems the mod ignored it. No reflections if enabled or disabled. Restarted the game after activating ray tracing but there was no difference also fps stayed the same.
With further testing the game/mod ingores even screen space reflections. Only those "baked" reflections are in there. Can't get any reflections working at all.
Deinstalled the mod, launched in flat -> reflections are there. Reinstalled the mod -> reflections are gone. Only those cube maps.
Using a RTX 2080ti on Valve Index.

It does run and look pretty good but still has a yellow tint. I don't know why so many games have vignettes and tints to them. Especially the odd color tints. Vignettes probably help with aliasing and covering outer vision.

This game has really some incredible trippy neon graphics! Love it!
Especially if ran on max res at 4900x3920 @80 FPS!
DLSS Quality, Ray Tracing all on HIGH.
3080Ti.
Looks incredible. What a well optimized game.
No need for any additional Reshade shadres etc in my opinion.
With 4340x3472 I am getting constant 90FPS but the gain in resolution at 4900 is totally worth the 10 FPS drop

This is cool to be in the game, but I'm having trouble with the reflections. I only get cube maps for some reason; no SSR or RT. That makes the game look like a hideous PS3 port of itself since nothing looks grounded and all the surfaces have a weird sheen. I saw SSR working in the Eurogamer video though, so I'm not sure why it's not working.

Nice, I was hoping to play this in VR one day. Performance is great. My only issue is that screenspace reflections don't seem to work for me. Only cubemap reflections from what I could tell. RT didn't work either.

Tested OpenXR/SteamVR/Oculus/Auto but no VR only Flat & sbs view, maybe DX12 device issue...

Most assuredly the right stick only turns left and right! Pitch (up/down movement) in VR is absolute, as your vestibular system can sense the direction of gravity. The world would never look believable, and the experience would soon lead to motion sickness, if up/down movement with the stick were not completely disabled.
About the overbright signs, check the brightness control in the game settings. As you can see from Ian's video, the mod doesn't change the game's color palette.

Thx Luke . The Mod performs really good.
How can i activate the controller camera to look up down? The right Stick only turns around.
I am playing with a RTX 3080 latest Nvidia codec / Rift S and all the whites (lightning) of stores and buildings visuals is too bright in the city. Like over flashed . Is there a way i can fix that? You barely can't read anything store banners as a example. I tried all and everything grafic settings but had no success with that.

this is so cool! When Ghostwire came out I thought it looked so interesting but I wasnt sure if I would really get into it on my comp but i would probably jump all over a VR version. Well my wishes are granted and its downloading from steam now!!! Cant wait to check it out (also im totally in love with ur FF7R port, i played the whole game in world scale mode so it looked like the entire game was made from little amazing toy models, such a unique gaming experiance)

Runs very smoothly on my 3070 at 90fps with DLSS set to Quality, res bumped up around 3600, subsurface scattering and reflections on high. Next to Dark Souls Id say this has been the easiest to set up with the least amount of hassle. I was curious the difference between the 2 global illumination options, and if there was any difference in texture quality with the streaming option changed from auto. Didnt mess with ray tracing as I thought that would just be silly with my gpu. Luke, if I were to rate all your mods in terms of performance, adaptability to VR, stability, and graphic fidelity, it would go best to least - Cyberpunk 2077, Horizon ZD, Ghostwire, FF7, Dark Souls, & Elden Ring. There were a couple in The Ones We Do Not Name category that I believe deserve some recognition as well for being very impressive feats. Condolences btw, they will live on in memory! Anyway, thank you Luke, for creating such a lineup of fantastic titles. I look through my list of top 10 VR titles, and you kinda dominate it.

Thank you Nebukanezzar, also for your longtime support!!! Yeah, it might be the usual annoying TAA. To double-check, switch temporarily to Mono from the mod's overlay. If the graininess disappears, it's caused by TAA similarly to what was happening in CP2077

Once again, great work as always Luke. My game started out at the max resolution and I was able to turn on ray tracing (High) while still maintaining 90FPS! After I finished the initial hospital area and came back outside though, it was raining and I took a big performance hit. Disabled ray tracing and its running smooth again. I had been watching this game and hoping someone would come up with a VR mod for it. It really does feel like it works very well in this setup. I am getting some graininess with the picture even at the highest resolution though. I noticed there was a film grain option for cutscenes that I disabled but still have some in normal gameplay. Would this be related to AA settings in some way?

Hey, just turned on parallel projections and to my surprise the performance was still good enough for me to still keep the same resolution. Solid 75 fps which is what i'm running my 8KX at. Fun game and it's apparently really optimized. Might have to try it with DLSS turned off just to see how it does. Thanks again for the mod!

thanks for the surprise mod! never even heard of the game but picked up because of your mod and it is pretty cool so far! I am using a Pimax 8KX and the game has the same problem with aiming that some other games have had with the Pimax headset. The reticle does not follow where the actual shot goes. Is there anything I can do on my end about this? I haven't tried running with parallel projections on yet but I know that will tank the performance even if it does fix the aiming issue. Performance is great without it though. I'm on a 3080 and can run it at the hightest resolution. Thanks!

Hey Tomo, thank you for the kind words and the performance data!! The visibility of your character's arms is not affected by the resolution but only by the position of your body in real space. When you first noticed it, you probably had been leaning forward to setup the game and when you sat back to play you dragged the camera with you :-)
When that happens, a quick shake of your head will recenter the view in VR and realign everything

Firstly : WOW ! Everytime I fire up any game with your mod I am in Awe!
Amazing immersive experience.
First feedback: PS5 controller (wired) with haptics works great (on Epic version)
and the Overlay with PAUSE button works as well.
Your starting resolution was not the greatest as I saw the characters arms (not sure maybe just in the beginning sequence and they disappear later, did not try)
I am running a 3080Ti and can easy set up 3860x3088 with 90fps, full Ray tracing all on HIGH = which works great so far and the visibilty of character arms is 95% resolved,
only if I really turn hard left or right I can see his arms a bit (Quest 2) but perfectly acceptable.
