Elden Ring VR troubleshooting

This post is meant to be a collection of known issues and (when possible) solutions. Please add a comment here if you have trouble with the R.E.A.L. VR mod for Elden Ring or if you have found a fix that you want to share with the community. I'll keep updating the FAQ when new information comes up.

The main post for Elden Ring with full instructions on how to install and use the mod is here, and the current release is attached to the latest post (currently 4.1.1).

Q1: The game crashes at start, or whenever I fast travel or die.

Status: Unexplained. It seems to be happening only to a few Patrons, and I'm unable to reproduce the issue here.

A1: First of all, disable or remove any third-party overlays, utilities, streaming programs, etc. that might be interfering with the mod. Stuff like the GOG Galaxy overlay, Overwolf, OBS, Twitch Studio and so on. They all tend to have in common the incredibly bad habit of always hooking every game they spot in the system even when their main application is closed :-|

Next, double-check that you're not using any other Elden Ring mods. Even if you just installed and then removed some of them in the past, pieces might still be left behind and that could be the cause of your crashes. After removing all other mods, use "Verify integrity of game files" on Steam (or an equivalent function if you bought the game from a different store) to make sure that your game has no corrupted or missing files.

Finally, run RealConfig again: choose to (D)elete the old settings and (just to be on the safe side) select the (L)ow preset.  Hopefully the next time you launch the game it won't crash anymore.

If that's not enough and you're feeling brave, you can download the EnableCrashDumps.reg file attached below and run it. It will enable the creation of a maximum of 5 minidumps for Elden Ring. Obligatory disclaimer: only take this step if you understand what you're doing, and accept that you're editing the registry at your own risk and I cannot be held responsible in case the action causes any damage to your system. Once you have added the key into the Windows registry, the next time Elden Ring crashes it should generate a minidump into the folder "%AppData%\EldenRing\CrashDumps". You can upload the minidump anywhere and give me the link, and I will try to examine it to see if it sheds some light on what's going on. Please understand that there are no guarantees, and if the crash is deep into Elden Ring's own code I might be unable to extract any useful information.

Q2: I have full frame rate as reported by XYZ, yet the world appears very jittery in the headset.

A2: Elden Ring is so heavy that it's very unlikely you're hitting the refresh frequency of your headset. The most probable explanation is that the third-party utility you're using to monitor fps is showing you a wrong figure. There are actually two fps values: one is the number of frames per second that are being sent to the VR runtime, which in the case of my mods should always be equal to headset refresh frequency, so it's not really relevant unless you see the compositor missing frames. The other, important one is the in-game fps, which my mods measure automatically and which you can see by enabling "Show FPS" in the "Overlay" tab of my GUI. You'll need at least 50-60 fps, as reported by the mod's internal counter, to have a pleasant experience in VR, and at least 70-80 for fluid battle animations. Anything below 45 fps is basically what I call unplayable.

Q3: But how do I access the mod overlay? I can only see the Quick Menu and there is no "Show FPS" checkbox.

A3: To access the full overlay just press A on the gamepad while in the Quick Menu. There's also another shortcut: during normal gameplay (so with the Quick Menu closed), you can double-press the Pause button on the keyboard or the combo Select+Start on the gamepad to be taken straight to the main overlay.

Q4: When I turn my head around in real life, the VR world appears perfectly stable, but if I use the right stick to turn the camera, everything judders.

A4: That is controlled by the "Camera rotation compensation" checkbox in the "ELDEN" tab. Each of the four cameras has its own independent setting. The caveat is, only a rotation around your point of view can be properly compensated. So the smoothing effect is enabled by default only for the first person camera, which actually rotates around you. If you enable the compensation for other cameras, distant objects will now be drawn correctly during camera rotations, but nearby models (notably your own character) will jitter. Choose what you prefer. For the same reason, there is also an "Auto disable when locked on enemy" checkbox: when the camera is locked on to an enemy, it will rotate around it instead of around your point of view, so to avoid your target appearing all jittery my default is to automatically disable the compensation when locked.

Q5: I have tried every combination of camera compensation settings and it still bothers me.

A5: You might want to lower your graphics settings and/or resolution, to achieve better in-game frame rates (see Q2). If you're being limited by your GPU performance and cannot get high enough fps, your best bet is probably switching to Mono rendering from the Quick Menu. You will lose the stereo effect, but the effective frame rate per eye will double.

Q6: How do I uninstall the mod to play flat?

A6: There is no need to uninstall anything if you want to play flat and/or multiplayer. Just choose the second option from the launcher, then once you're in game you can switch it back to fullscreen if you wish. But if after that you should want to remove the mod for good, just delete my custom launcher "start_protected_game.exe" and rename the backup "start_protected_game_ori.exe" to "start_protected_game.exe". Even simpler, you can have Steam verify the game files and it will be done automatically for you.

Q7: Sometimes the RB button (quick attack) orโ€”much less frequentlyโ€”another button on the gamepad will stop working.

A7: Occasionally, and in particular if the mouse moves outside the game window, the game seems to get confused about which buttons are actually pressed. To bring what the game thinks back in sync with what is actually happening, just click inside the game window with both the left and right mouse buttons, together or one after the other. Magically the gamepad will resume working properly.

Hi Sam, please post questions further up as I don't scroll back this far often. The main Start Here post is a good place for questions. Make sure you disable Steam Theater for all VR mods and don't start SteamVR before starting the game. Just start the game from your library as you would if you were playing flat or the games .exe file if you are avoiding an update for some reason or something like that.

Brandon(Post Maester)

i cant even start the game in vr, i did all the steps in your post but it just doesnt start in vr, it doesnt even give me the pop up saying if i want to start the game in vr, it just goes into steam theatre

sam cem

That can't possibly be due to my mod :-) Also, I always recommend installing the VR mods on a pristine copy of the game, without other mods installed, precisely because it's hard to be sure that the other mods would not be interfering with VR.

LukeRoss

Yeah, that didn't work. I eventually got it by just deleting every single file associated with this mod. I eventually got the mod working, however it was extremely buggy and once I eventually uninstalled the mod it somewhat messed up my playthrough with my friends. We're doing the Randomizer mod and when I walk into boss rooms it says "?NPCName?" instead of their actual name. I'm not sure how to fix this but I'm gonna try having my friends send me their Randomizer folder and hopefully it'll fix it?

Tolnin

Did you validate the game files with Steam?

LukeRoss

I've done both versions of completely uninstalling/playing flat that you explained but neither of them worked. I might try to get it working later but right now I just want it completely uninstalled so I can play with my friends

Tolnin

Which store do you own the game from? Are you seeing the small dialog box with the choice "Run game in VR (offline)" vs "Go online (no mods allowed)"?

LukeRoss

dont work for me at all. just copy the files run it and choose high and everything is ok but when i start the game it opens in a window and start but no vr no option for customisation or so. just the regular game like if it is without this mod

David

That's really weird. I myself am in the other camp, among the people who need it to be on for the (same) gamepad to work. I really have no clue what to recommend to users when it comes to the big pool of mystery called Steam Input :-(

LukeRoss

Steam Input off - works for RDR2 and ER

Out of curiosity, which setting worked for you? Steam Input on or off for the game?

LukeRoss

the game updated today to version 1.05 and this has kind of broken the experience on an Oculus Quest 2. Now horizontal black bars are to be seen in VR, the menu is invisible and the map is linked to the view, it's no longer an external object. This is persistent after mod reinstallation and system restart

petrus munteanu

Thx - that did it for me ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿป

I use an Xbox gamepad myself. If you own the game from Steam, make sure that the Steam Input settings for the controller and the game are to their defaults. You might also want to try toggling Steam Input on/off, as it is quite finicky and it seems that some users need it to be on and others need it to be off

LukeRoss

Hi, I have a problem using my XBOX conroller. I can open the mod menu, but aside from that I cant controll the game. Mouse and Keyboard are working - just the controller isnt. Can anyone help?

Something had likely gone wrong during the previous installation! Anyway, glad that you're achieving a playable frame rate now :-) Enjoy!

LukeRoss

I have a ryzen 5 3600x. I'm not .... sure what happened, but I uninstalled the mod, and then installed it again ..... and now it's working okay. It jumps between 50-72, but thats much more playable. I noticed the resolutions it was giving me the options of weren't the square resolutions that your mod makes the game have .... it was acting really weird. I'm not really sure what happened O.o

Andii Doedema

That makes no sense, the 3060 Ti is almost twice as powerful as the 1070! It should be running much better than that. Do you have a very old CPU? What frame rates do you get if you put all graphics options (resolution included) to their minimum values?

LukeRoss

after upgrading, it doesn't seem to have changed a whole lot. it seems to be around 40-55 now, so a little bit .... but is not really playable :C

Andii Doedema

Yeah, that's pretty low. I consider anything below 45 fps essentially unplayable. It gives you a nice idea of what the game could look like (as long as you stay very still!) but to enjoy a good experience in VR you need at least 60-70 fps.

LukeRoss

oh wow, i hadn't actually checked my fps before, cause i didn't know how .... but i found it, and it hovers between like 35 and 50fps lol.

Andii Doedema

No problem! What frame rates are you getting now?

LukeRoss

Thank you so much lol, I wasn't sure if I wanted to upgrade it so soon, but since it'll help with elden ring, i want to now. And thanks for the information too o:

Andii Doedema

Yes, upgrading your GPU helps a lot, and not only with the camera compensation: it's probably the single best upgrade you can make to your system. That said, the setting depends on where your attention usually rests. If you tend to always look at your character, best to leave compensation off. If you usually look in the distance, best on. If you normally look in the distance but focus on your character during combat, there is a setting to automatically turn off the compensation when the camera is locked onto an enemy

LukeRoss

so .... something i don't exactly understand. the camera compensation settings, whether it's on or off, in third person, it gives me headaches cause its so jittery. i was thinking of upgrading my GPU, because it's needed for other reasons too, but i'm not sure if that'll help with that? I currently have a gtx 1070, and plan to upgrade to a 3060ti

Andii Doedema

The only thing I changed was my right hand weapon, I will test and let you know.

FlyingWaffle

so it's a lmitation of reprojection technology then. I wonder if that will ever improve?

It might depend on changes that you made to your character (appearance, wearables, etc.). I'm still looking for a more robust solution though

LukeRoss

Please use the "Reply to comment" button to avoid creating a new thread each time. The issue comes from the fact that there are missing frames which I must reconstruct via reprojection, due to the game's frame rate being way lower than the stereo refresh frequency of the headset. Reprojection only works perfectly for pure rotations around the point of view. As the in-game fps increases, less reprojections are needed, and they also become more accurate even for movements which are not pure rotations.

LukeRoss

The issue with the camera sudden shift when picking an item in a chest or jumping/galloping/going down a slope on the horse (which I had even after 4.1.1) suddenly went away on its own... (now in those situations the view just shifts back to third person for a sec and then comes back to the right position).

FlyingWaffle

So you're saying with a high enough frame rate the issue wouldn't exist? Is it just a frame rate issue or is there some underlying limitation with these kinds of conversions?

Hey Justin! The Elden Ring conversion is the worst-case scenario for this problem, because it's only an issue if you play in third person and the frame rate is low. For all my other mods the vast majority of people play in first person (where the camera compensation works perfectly) except for Mafia II where there is no true first person camera, but there the frame rate is high enough to have no artifacts.

LukeRoss

As much as I admire your amazing work on these mods Luke, the camera compensation artefacts are a deal breaker for me. I like to play in third person but if I play with the background smooth, the character looks horribly blurred. If I have the character smooth the background jitter makes me nauseated. You suggested that it could be a limitation of the GPU and higher frame rates would fix this. Did I understand that correctly? What I don't understand is why this limitation exists at all. Can I assume that all future mods will also have this issue? I really want to love your mod, but currently I have a better experience in VR playing in normal mode, running ReShade with the Depth3d plugin and using Virtual Desktop (in SBS 3D mode). It's like playing on a massive movie screen in full 3D. You don't get head tracking but the character and background are both smooth as butter when moving the camera. And the resolution feels much higher too.

Thanks for responding Luke. Looks like the error was on my end. I have a USB HOTAS that appears to be interfering with the gamepad controller in Elden Ring. When I run the game with it disconnected, everything works as it should.

Hi Justin! I don't remap the gamepad in my mod, so I'm not sure what would be messing with it. Does it work correctly if you play in online mode?

LukeRoss

ERROR: Mod installation files not found. When unzipping the mod archive, please make sure to overwrite existing files and to use folder names (preserve the zip folder structure).

Not sure if this is something anyone else has come across but I'm having a controller issues when connecting my gamepad to the Quest 2 over Bluetooth. In game the gamepad mapping is all wrong, and pretty much unusable.
