Release 2.2.4 (for RDR2, the Mafia Trilogy and H:ZD)
Added 2021-12-22 21:00:55 +0000 UTCThis will probably be my last release for this year. And what a year it has been! The ride couldn't have been wilder if it had taken place on a Broadhead :-)
For new users
The release attached at the bottom of this post is the one you want to download. It implements all the VR conversions in this Patreon: Red Dead Redemption 2, Mafia: Definitive Edition, Mafia II: Definitive Edition, Mafia III: Definitive Edition and now Horizon: Zero Dawn.
Please note that each game will require a separate installation. For RDR2 there is also a PDF attached below with instructions; for the other games, refer to this post for general setup and configuration directions, and if needed to the specific posts covering each game to obtain more detailed information.
For Patrons who are already playing Horizon: Zero Dawn
This release brings several fixes and improvements to the experience.
- First and foremost, what many of you asked for is finally here: perfectly smooth turning, both with the gamepad stick and the mouse! I rewrote the prediction code from scratch to adapt it to Horizon: Zero Dawn, and now it works much better also for Red Dead Redemption 2! In the overlay, you will find this labeled "Camera rotation compensation": it's selected by default for the first person camera.
Due to the way VR runtimes work, this type of prediction can only compensate for a rotation around the viewer (it uses ATW/reprojection). So by default it's not active for the third person camera, because it would fix the background but make Aloy jittery as you orbit around her. Anyway, as usual you can experiment with the settings and find the combination you like best. - Another thing some users wanted (myself included) was a better camera for climbing and parkour. I spent a lot of time on this one, because Aloy climbs really close to the rock wall/pole/ladder/etc., and that means there just is no room for a good first person camera. So, in the end I wrote in a secondary camera that activates automatically during climbing. It's third person, but very close, as it's meant to give you the ability to look around and clearly see where you want to go next, while at the same time preserving your identification with Aloy, that is, still making you feel like you are the one doing the climbing. The camera has its own offset that you can freely adjust though, so if you want to pull it farther away from the wall and Aloy, you can. Of course there's also a checkbox to turn it off, if you liked the previous implementation better.
- At this point I feel that the first person camera is mature enough, and it's also been received very favorably and with great enthusiasm by YouTubers and Patrons alike, so I've made it the default choice and removed the "experimental" qualification :-)
- I fixed the issue with aiming when it rains hard, where the crosshair would latch on to the raindrops and become all twitchy. Now you'll be able to hunt in all weathers, as a Seeker should. Thank you for sending me savegames to reproduce the problem!
- Another request from Patrons: in the "HZD" overlay tab, you will find a new control that allows you to bind a key on the keyboard to toggle between the 1st person and 3rd person camera at all moments during gameplay. Some of you would also like to have buttons on the gamepad for the same thing, but for now we haven't been able to come up with a combo that won't trigger anything else in the game, or that wouldn't activate unexpectedly and jarringly, for example during combat.
- I also fixed another issue which was harder to reproduce, but in the end with the help of a few Patrons sharing their savegames we were able to hunt it down: in certain areas of the map, the HUD and more rarely portions of the screen would start to shake. It turned out that my detection code for when Aloy is aiming was sometimes mistakenly getting triggered by nearby NPCs. I made it more robust now, and that shouldn't happen anymore.
- For RDR2: I introduced an experimental countermeasure to reduce the chance that global-hooking software like Twitch Studio will crash the game or make it perform poorly. I'm eager for your feedback on this one: does the game run better now for you? Worse? Unchanged?
Another general bit of advice for Horizon: Zero Dawn. The game turns out to be really VRAM-hungry, and will burn through 8 GB on your GPU like it was nothing. It also doesn't know about the VRAM used by the VR runtime, which complicates things. So, if you get weird behaviors like missing textures or geometry, low detail, horrible frame rates etc., you'll want to dial down a bit on the resolution and/or texture quality, and it's also important to close all other applications to reduce VRAM pressure to a minimum. Finally, the lens flare effects in the game are completely over the top! There's little I can do about them though, as they are a design choice of the original (flat) implementation.
That's it for today! Merry Christmas to you all, and I wish you the most relaxing holidays, both in the real and the virtual world!!!
Comments
I know, the mounted position is suboptimal :-( As you saw, the problem is that Aloy rides all bent forward, and putting the camera in the correct position when the mount is not moving would result in horrible clipping as soon as the machine picks up speed. Unfortunately the camera doesn't give information about how bent forward Aloy is; it only reports whether she's on a mount or not. Perhaps in the future I will be able to actually tie the camera to Aloy's eyes, which would get rid of all clipping issues at the root! However the downside of that would be a lot of bobbing which might make some people sick
LukeRoss
2022-02-06 11:22:41 +0000 UTCI love that you can ride in this game, but the camera position on-horse is not great; it's rather on the neck of the mount. I tried tweaking the forward/backward offset position, but then you begin to see the characters head. Of course, I can't really compare it to RDR2, because I know you did some magic here in order to have a first person camera in the first place, and this is incredible already. But man, the immersion was great there when riding a horse, because you got to see the horse while riding it. Is there any chance that this can be improved at some point? maybe make the offset position to set itself automatically on the best position when riding or adding a separate offset option in the VR settings for that etc
petrus munteanu
2022-02-05 22:08:15 +0000 UTCThe camera is aligned with Aloy's eyes, and she is very short (like, 5 feet tall). Even more so in the initial child levels, where she is about 3'3". So yes, it's a strange point of view for a man. The guards looks like giants from that perspective! That said, you can use the offsets I provided in the "HZD" tab to tweak the camera ;-)
LukeRoss
2022-02-01 08:13:37 +0000 UTCHave to ask though, is there any way I can raise the camera view point? I'm mostly playing sitting, and it feels a little low. RDR 2 was ok on this regard

2022-01-31 20:29:32 +0000 UTCSo far HZD runs the smoothest I've ever seen, I'm running 2700x2700 with ultra settings on a RTX 2060. The clearest picture I've ever seen in a VR headset; it's pretty darn impressive

2022-01-31 20:28:37 +0000 UTCHi Luke. I'm doing my best to gather support for FH5 in VR in the Race Department forums. A little support from the community but hoping for more. https://www.racedepartment.com/threads/trying-to-get-luke-ross-to-do-vr-for-fh5.212842/

SteamVR is neither needed nor recommended for the Quest 2: the mod has native support for the Oculus runtime. 2022-01-30 21:36:37 +0000 UTCRDR2. I have rockstar link to stream and the stream vr seemed to have issues where it too would cut out. so i reinstalled rdr2 and can now open through rockstar launcher but as the game begins the VR just returns to home
2022-01-30 21:02:31 +0000 UTCHey Alec! Which game are you referring to?
LukeRoss
2022-01-30 20:43:00 +0000 UTCHi guys, I wondered if anyone could help me or point me in the right directions. each time I load the game and start a new game my VR quest 2 seems to lose connection to the game and goes to its home screen and the game carries on, on the desk top. Is there anything i can do to fix this? Thanks in advance.
2022-01-30 20:07:46 +0000 UTCI hate to jump on bandwagon but your post was rude, Luke's Mods in general are 98% better then VR game ready software and the mods are full games. I have played GTA5, Mafia series and HZD all with his mods which were excellent graphics and playable wise.

2022-01-30 19:40:19 +0000 UTCThere are issues with the Pimax headsets right now. Pimax recently sent Luke a headset to test with and some improvements will be made. For now in order to aim properly in RDR2 you must have parallel projections turned on and even then there are still some rendering issues. With your machine once the problems are fixed you should be able to get a really good experience. There are settings to improve the game resolution depending on how good your PC is and you will be be able to get a really good resolution once things are working properly. I currently have to play the MOD with my Quest 2 because it doesn't work well with the 8KX right now. If you only have an 8KX, you should hold off on playing the mods for now.

2022-01-30 17:45:52 +0000 UTCi am the owner of 3090 + -i9-10900kf / Pimax 8kx! Just tried RDR2 game with this MOD and its SUCK! Even ULTRA settings cant help! game is sooo low resolution , i cant even aim properly in first scene fight ! Just a kid mod.... nothing special! If i am wrong provide me video where i can see REAL quality/resolution in this game ( not a monitor screen, but VR LENSE!)
2022-01-30 17:33:06 +0000 UTCany advice on implementing dldsr on those games
2022-01-30 17:03:52 +0000 UTCJust rename dxgi.dll to *.bak and the mod won't attach anymore!
LukeRoss
2022-01-30 01:06:43 +0000 UTCHello, I would like to ask, how can I turn off your mod in Mafia Definitive Edition if I want to play without a VR. Thx
2022-01-30 01:01:25 +0000 UTCVR on that scale is pretty crazy really. Take your time and don't get too stressed out.

2022-01-29 13:21:15 +0000 UTCHey Luke, hope you are well, ive been trying to think of a subtle way to ask as we are approaching the end of January and im sure the burning question on everybodys lips is how far off is Cyberpunk as its looking like it may now be a February release. Ive absolutely no idea what it entails all i know is that im sure you are working very hard to bring it to us. I hope i am not overstepping my boundaries here its just we usually get a few words from yourself as a project is nearing completion, is there any update you can share with us at this point ?

2022-01-29 09:30:17 +0000 UTCWhich one ? Far Cry 3 ?
Cercata
2022-01-29 08:59:06 +0000 UTCHi Luke, I was wondering if you are intending on doing Far cry eventually, due to the poll results? I am mainly asking because the far cry bundle has a HUGE discount currently on steam

2022-01-28 21:54:32 +0000 UTCThank you for the kind words, Neil!! Sure, to play flat just rename RealVR64.json to *.bak, and if you want you can also restore the original settings from system_ori.xml in Documents\Rockstar Games\Red Dead Redemption 2\Settings. To play in VR, either do the opposite or run RealConfig again

2022-01-27 13:56:10 +0000 UTCIs there a way in which I can easily enable/disable the mod in RDR2, so that I can switch between VR and normal 3D mode?
2022-01-27 13:43:28 +0000 UTCThe mod looks and plays amazing. Thank you very much. I've never played this game (RDR2) so it is great to experience the story for the first time in VR.
2022-01-27 13:41:08 +0000 UTCIs a clean instalation or did you have others mods before this one ?

2022-01-26 15:51:34 +0000 UTCThank you for the awesome mods! Got them to work without any issues. Still need to try Mafia series out. The only one I can not get to work is RDR2. I have reinstalled it several times, copied over the files into the game directory as administrator while game was not running, but no matter what I get no VR activation with my Quest 2 while in Rift or Steam mode. There has to be something I am missing. Any ideas would greatly be appreciated.
2022-01-26 13:35:32 +0000 UTCI played Origines with Z3D, Egypt was so awesome in VR

2022-01-25 12:48:58 +0000 UTCOh, I need to add that HZD was totally unplayable (nauseating) on 1080 Ti, even after I reduce the resolution down almost by x2. It plays perfectly fine on 3080 Ti on full resolution (although not as crisp as GTA4 or RDR2).

2022-01-25 06:14:17 +0000 UTCFor those who are undecided about a GPU upgrade: to get ready for the upcoming CP, I just decided to upgrade from my 2x 1080 Ti's to a 3080 Ti. I was expecting some small boost in FPS in Luke's mods (because most of the time you end up being limited by other stuff like CPU etc). But what I got was a whopping x2 improvement in FPS in both GTA4 and RDR2. The games run in 80-90 FPS and alternating eye flicker is almost invisible. I now understand the settings in these games are actually optimized for a 3080 Ti (they didn't make much sense for my old 1080 Ti, so I had to tweak them before). Anyways.. If you are unsure if you will get a gain with a GPU upgrade, just go for it..

2022-01-24 22:14:33 +0000 UTCI've just started playing Assassins Creed Origins & Odyssey again, boy are those great games, they look amazing in Z3D but I can imaging if Luke eventually gets around to them they would blow my mind. Can't remember were they on the list? Valhalla no work around for 3d yet, that might be a challenge. Obviously The Witcher 3 is my Last Wish though (wink wink for all you Witcher fans ;)

2022-01-24 21:52:24 +0000 UTCThanks for the answers! I figured it might be a mod conflict, and I really shoulda checked that first tbh. It turns out it was the Aloy Adjustments mod, maybe something with that overlay was getting in the way. But I got rid of it, and now the first person is working. This mod is pretty amazing. I wish my 2080 was a little bit better ;') But thanks again, and awesome work!

2022-01-24 20:35:01 +0000 UTCHey KB, welcome! Nobody reported that issue until now. Do you have other mods installed for the game that may be conflicting?
LukeRoss
2022-01-24 12:30:21 +0000 UTCHi! Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, but I'm having a little trouble with HZD. The mod seems to be working fine, other than the first person mode not working. I'm toggling it on and off, but nothing changes. It's still a blast to play in third person, and the gaze-based aiming looks awesome with Aloy looking around, but I was wondering if anyone also has this issue. Thanks :)

2022-01-23 18:34:42 +0000 UTCThank you Kevin! I'm really sorry for the RealConfig issue, may I ask you which specific portion of the script failed in your case? There are several failsafes already in it against problems like uncommon paths, but I'm always looking for ways to make it more robust. Your monitor resolution is not a factor. By Rift2 you mean the Quest 2? Are you using the Link cable or Air Link? Have you checked that all your encoding settings in the Oculus Debug Tool are at default?

2022-01-23 13:26:21 +0000 UTCI didnt want to be a bore. So, I stuck with it and figured out how to get it going. The install was not in a standard directory for me because I have multiple drives and I didnt have the right ENV variable set either. The silver lining to all that digging is I never spent much time in Powershell and now I know a little more about it. Alright, that said. Congrats, this is pretty damn cool. We have come a long ways from the wraparound weirdness of skyrim. Thanks. That said I was disappointed that my rig couldnt handle it better. I had to back it off to medium settings to get it to run right and still got a lot of dropped frame during the more intense scenes like on horseback. This is what I am running, so I was wondering if I should be able to run it better. i7-10700 32gb @4000 and a 3080ti on a Rift2. One question I have always wondered. Since my main monitor is 4k, should I be changing the res on the main monitor to something like 1080 before I try to start the game?
2022-01-23 11:38:43 +0000 UTCDude... my grandma is off her rocker STOKED for CpunkVR. #gramsneeds2chill granny get out and vote cyberpunk. You might not make it to 2032.

2022-01-23 01:05:01 +0000 UTCI'm not sure yet whether God of War will make the list, but I sure appreciate your kindness <3
LukeRoss
2022-01-21 21:22:10 +0000 UTCFar Cry is a very good series, and all first person, which maps very well to VR. However, the only reliable result that I gathered from the poll was that everybody and their grandmothers wanted to have CP2077 immediately :-D For example, while it's technically correct that the Far Cry series came out in second place, it only collected 89 votes for a huge saga comprising 6 major games and several spin-offs and episodes, whereas The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt raised 86 votes all on its own. And porting GTA V to my new framework, which collected 68 votes here in the Patreon poll, also received hundreds of requests from other users who wrote to me personally or posted in my GitHub or around the Web.
LukeRoss
2022-01-21 21:10:41 +0000 UTCWe just had a poll and Far Cry series came second. I for one can't wait for the opportunity to drive around with my crew, fly helicopters, sky dive, squirrel suits, Hunting, take over bases, etc. IMHO That series is just beggin to be played in VR
Clint
2022-01-21 20:53:43 +0000 UTCYou can use that month to do another poll for what's next or just maybe do a few easy things to make the mod better in general.
Brandon(Post Maester)
2022-01-21 17:18:00 +0000 UTCLuke, I think after cyberpunk, you should do God of War (because it sounds like you really want to enjoy that game in VR) and then take a month or so off and just enjoy playing it and whatever else you want to do :)
Brandon(Post Maester)
2022-01-21 17:17:04 +0000 UTCNo, but I play again if Luke does a mod.

2022-01-21 08:41:10 +0000 UTCSure he's making headwys, but I wonder if even crunching he will be able to hit the january milestone, he set a very ambitious goal. We don't want him to bunrout !!!! I hope the next time he'll be more moderate when talking to big media, and put a security factor to his estimations.

2022-01-21 07:23:41 +0000 UTCHi Luke, are you making any headway with CP2077? I imagine cyberpunk is a tough beast to tackle. Does your framework help? Or is every new engine like starting from scratch? and hope you are not working yourself too hard. 👍👍.

2022-01-20 23:24:35 +0000 UTCHaha you're right as always Cercata, but in truth I'm not finding the time to play anything lately :-( Perhaps putting out one game a month is not really sustainable. Anyway, we'll see once CP2077 is out of the way

2022-01-20 16:02:36 +0000 UTCHey LukeRoss, are you planning to play Hitman ? The port adds hands, but just for some mechanics like shooting, most of the mechanics are true to the original, as you like ;) If you wanna remain in the top of your field, you must inspect what competitors are doing !!!!

2022-01-20 15:55:45 +0000 UTCHi Mattxc, welcome! The performance gap should normally be the other way around (the native Oculus implementation should run better than OpenVR). Also, the Quest 2 under OpenVR doesn't support alternate eye rendering properly. So we need to understand why you're having performance issues with the Oculus runtime. What are you using to connect the Quest 2 to the PC?

2022-01-18 11:03:41 +0000 UTCI’m getting a lot of crashes in Valentine :-/ It took me 3-4x attempts just to get through the short ‘drinking at the bar with Lenny’ mission because it kept crashing in the transitions between the different segments. When I’m outside of town it seems fine, but now I have a save file with my horse in town and the game crashes before I can even ride out of town. Are there recommendations for how to avoid these crashes? I tried different antifreeze settings but I’m not sure how that setting is supposed to work.. anything over medium made the game unplayable—if you turned your head it would freeze on a frame for several seconds. 2022-01-17 16:01:40 +0000 UTCBy any chance do you have "HDR" turned on in your Windows screen settings?
LukeRoss
2022-01-17 15:24:41 +0000 UTCHi and welcome, Heikki! The artefacts you mention are due to the fact that the VR runtime can only compensate one rigid rotation. So, if you leave the "1st" checkbox for "Camera rotation compensation" activated, as it is by default, the world rotation will be properly compensated but the hand and gun (which don't rotate with the world) will ghost. Conversely, if you deselect it, you will have proper rendering of the hand and gun but the rest of the world will ghost when you turn with the mouse/thumbstick.

2022-01-17 15:21:38 +0000 UTCHi! First, thank you for this mod. It works basically fine but there is this annoying hand and weapon jitter when turning. It happens also during lowest graphics. Im totally new to this and I have not find a solution or have missed it. Maybe I have to change some settings? Info: Nvidia Geforce RTX 2080, AMD Ryzen 7 3700X -8core. Brandon(Post Maester)
2022-01-17 07:22:02 +0000 UTCTried to jump back into RDR2 tonight to try the latest version of the mod (been away from it for several months). The game loaded normally once. I quit the game and added the FSR mod as some have recommended on this site. Now the game will not progress past the "animal photos" loading screen, and it makes no difference whether I've got FSR installed or not. The music stops after about a minute and the little revolver loading animation in the lower right of my view in the HMD, but it will just continue cycling through photos until I force quit the program in task manager. Any thoughts on how I might fix this?

2022-01-16 22:11:06 +0000 UTCGreat mod for Mafia 3! I spent maybe an hour messing with the settings and am trying to figure out how to get better performance. I have a RTX 3060Ti. The best balance I could get was by lowering all the graphics (except textures) and using 2430x2430. This runs decently on my machine until you turn using the camera. Camera movement is always jittery, even on lower resolutions. 2700x2700 looks nicer but that’s where I began getting a bit of jitter even moving my character. I have tried changing the GPU throttling and did not see much of a difference in regards to this issue. I have also turned OFF all the settings that were advised. I am wondering if there is anything else I may be missing, because I have looked and not seen many comments about the jitteryness. The YT videos I have watched do not mention it, despite it being extremely noticeable upon any camera movement. The head tracking movement works great though. If I could somehow fix the camera movement jitter, and have it run as smooth as the head tracking, that would be awesome. The head is basically just a different control for the same camera, and the rendering shouldnt be any less difficult I believe? So I'm not sure why the X axis control with the joystick becomes such a problem when head camera movement is not. I ran RE2 VR (via the praydog mod) and it was very smooth on my machine. Just to give a reference for a newer game running on my machine in VR. So I'm not sure if it is my machine, or setup, or if M3DE just happens to be jittery but that just hasnt been brought up in the media Ive seen on it. Thanks for reading.

2022-01-16 14:45:26 +0000 UTC1. Motion repro must be off, correct. 2. Not sure what you're seeing. If it's the shimmering halo that can be noticed even when you stay still and look at a nearby still object (like a tree), then the way to go it's to increase resolution. 3. There is no x16 antialiasing filter: are you talking about Anisotropic filtering? That should be left to its maximum value as it's very cheap

2022-01-16 14:32:16 +0000 UTCIf you don't have the dxgi.dll in the exe folder, something must have gone wrong when you ran RealConfig.bat. Could you try running it again, and copying its output here from the command window so I can see whether it looks correct?

2022-01-16 14:28:43 +0000 UTCI realized that I got better frame rates due to OpenXR. Now it runs seamless. Best experience so far! Thank you Luke! Couple of questions, just want to make sure I have the right config set up. My system config are RTX 3080 and Hp Reverb G2. 1. I''m assuming the motion re-projection be set to 'off' in OpenXR. Is that correct? 2. I'm assuming targeting frames more than 100+ would reduce the little artifacts or shimmers around objects? Or should I target for higher resolution in game settings? Tips to reduce this? 3. The antialiasing filter should be set to min than x16?
2022-01-16 12:38:28 +0000 UTCHi Luke. I signed up so I could trythe Mafia 3 vr mod, but cant get it to start up. I have the latest update of M3DE, copied the zip contents of MDE3 to my Mafia 3 steamapps>common>Mafia III folder. Then click "Play" for the game in the Steam app. I have also tried loading SteamVR first. What happens is the 2k Launcher app comes up, then I press "Play" again there, and then soon it quits and I am back at the Steam game page. I cannot find any instructions for what I am doing wrong. Thanks EDIT: I also double clicked and "Run Anyway" the RealConfig.bat file (but did not move it). I also did not mess with the openvr_api.dll file. I am trying to follow the instructions here https://www.patreon.com/posts/mafia-iii-to-new-58404045 I also dont see a "dxgi.dll file" in my game folder

2022-01-15 21:02:30 +0000 UTCHi Asheel! The behavior is by design. VR needs higher resolutions than an ordinary monitor can provide, so the game has been modded to allow its window to extend past the desktop limits. The mouse will not be able to reach the hidden parts of the window, but you can still navigate the menus with the keyboard, although I highly recommend using a gamepad to play all my mods!

2022-01-14 18:39:44 +0000 UTCI seem to have some resolution issue with Mafia 2, the in-game resolution is more than the monitor resolutions due to which the mouse gets unresponsive on certain parts of the screen. 2022-01-14 06:02:36 +0000 UTCI want to start out by saying this mod is amazing. I've been using this mod for a few days to play RDR2, I've managed to get the game to run smoothly but everything is blurry, and certain things like horse hair is very pixelated. I've been tweaking with the in-game settings but it hasn't fixed the issue. The only other problem I've been having is sometimes the game will stop displaying on my Index, and I have to restart the game to get it running again.
2022-01-14 00:45:25 +0000 UTCHi Justin! The mod works best if all NVIDIA control panel settings are left at default. V-Sync must be off, because you don't want to waste precious GPU cycles waiting for the desktop monitor to sync!
LukeRoss
2022-01-13 16:58:09 +0000 UTCHi Luke. Should in-game Vsync be on or off? And what about in the Nvidia control panel settings?
2022-01-13 14:42:05 +0000 UTCI'm using it and honestly, I can't play without it anymore. This goes for RDR2 and HZD. It removes the awful blur that melts the details into a pixel soup. FSR brings the extra sharpness that lacks otherwise to be fully immersed in a detailed world. Once you've witnessed the level of details with it in those games, you simply can't go back ! My settings for HZD : (SteamVR's general renderscale at 150%) in game renderer 2700x2700 ; no DLSS ; camera based AA FSR "renderScale": 0.77 ; "sharpness": 1 ; "radius": 0.3 ; " applyMIPBias": true

2022-01-10 18:09:42 +0000 UTCThank you for the support, Jonathan! Some amount of ghosting when objects undergo lateral motion is normal, it's due to alternate eye rendering. It can be alleviated by increasing your headset refresh rate if possible, or by getting a higher frame rate in game (lowering the resolution and/or the graphics options). As for perfectly smooth turning, it's already implemented in RDR2 (see "Camera rotation compensation" in the post for release 1.1.0, https://www.patreon.com/posts/52136321 ), and it will be added to the other games in the next release :-)

2022-01-10 00:43:11 +0000 UTCFinished HZD. Full playthrough in VR after stopping at about 20% in the flat version. Gotta say it's an absolute tragedy that the bulk of users don't get to see these detailed AAA worlds in VR. Big highlight for me was having both first and third person support. I loved being able to explore the quieter places up close in first person and then drop into a third person view to fully orient myself in the combat sections. Thanks heaps for this experience. Not sure how everyone else feels and I know you've committed to Cyberpunk... but...I can't help thinking ... "God Of War" ... How great would that play in VR . Just sayin' :)

2022-01-09 17:45:39 +0000 UTCLuke, I am having a problem in which I can't seem to be able to finish any mission without RDR2 crashing the VR at some point. I have a i7-6700K 4Ghz with 32Gb Ram and a 2080ti with a Reverb 1 running in WMR. The problem is that the headset suddenly loses communication with the game and the headset image will revert to the WMR cliffhouse. The game will continue by displaying on my desktop monitor instead in the small, square game window. Note that I have the OpenXR renderer option selected from the "R.E.A.L. VR" overlay tab as you recommended when solving my stuttering problem above. I am using the "L" option from RealConfig.bat, and DLSS is Off in NVIDIA settings.
2022-01-09 17:39:53 +0000 UTCI play with the default settings included in the mod (2700x2700, everything maxed out except Motion Blur which must be off and AA = Camera based). Refresh is not so important, but if your system can take it, 120 Hz makes the AER artefacts look very natural, almost like motion blur. DLSS doesn't work very well in VR so I leave it off. I fixed it for RDR2, but I'm not sure whether that can be done for H:ZD too.

2022-01-09 16:39:32 +0000 UTCWith a laptop, the most likely explanation is that the integrated GPU is interfering. If your laptop has two GPUs (one integrated for power saving and the RTX3060 for gaming) could you try disabling the iGPU and rebooting? In general, with the Quest 2 there should be no need to use OpenXR, since the mod supports Oculus natively

2022-01-08 19:11:31 +0000 UTCHi Luke. Just joined your Patreon a couple of days ago and first I'd like to say that your mods are really awesome. It's really fantastic to be able to experience worlds like RDR2 or Mafia I in VR. In RDR2, I'm using the medium settings and I'd be happy with the performance for most things - it's really smooth when I turn my head to look around and fairly smooth when I get Arthur's body turning around too, but when on horse, turning the horse body around is quite juddery. I wonder whether I have to downgrade setting even more or whether I'm missing something. My rig is i7 8086K 32GB RAM and RTX 3090 - using your medium preset and DLSS (with a 3420x3420 window), with a Vive Pro 2 (motion compensation set to off, using 90hz mode)

2022-01-07 20:48:11 +0000 UTCLuke, I just got RDR2 this week and immediately loaded your mod. I get dreadful stuttering as I move my head around to view surroundings. I have a i7-6700K 4Ghz with 32Gb Ram and a 2080ti video card, a HP Reverb, but no matter what option I choose when running RealConfig.bat, the result is the same. I disabled Motion Reprojection in the OpenXR Developer Tools for Windows Mixed Reality app as well as the Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR Settings app (since I don't know which one of these two programs is the one that actually sets it in the game), but again, no change in the stuttering. Maybe there is somewhere else I am supposed to turn off Motion Reprojection? I don't know if I want to go the DLSS route since that seems rather involved and I fear mucking something up even worse. Anyway, do you have some other ideas to make it work right? Overall, it seems to work pretty well except for this stuttering problem, and I have only had the program crash two or three times after putting in about 5 hours into it, so any help would be most appreciated. I should point out that I can run DCS pretty smoothly, so this problem appears to be peculiar to whatever setup I have for this game.
2022-01-07 20:44:31 +0000 UTCWhat you might have missed is that with the Reverb G2 you need to choose OpenXR as the renderer from the "R.E.A.L. VR" overlay tab :-)

2022-01-07 18:07:01 +0000 UTCYep, that's correct unfortunately. You can get rid of those artefacts completely if you select Mono from the "Render mode" drop menu, but of course you will lose the 3D effect. I might be able to fix DLSS for correct Stereo rendering in the future, like I did for Red Dead Redemption 2, but no promises :-)
LukeRoss
2022-01-07 09:43:08 +0000 UTCfor horizon zero dawn, is the mod intended to work with DLSS? The newer versions of DLSS rely on some game input parameters to work properly right? There are very noticable halos / ghosting / shimmering around tree trunks or people outlines in VR (2700 x 2700 2x upscaling quality DLSS), but in 2D, even at very low res (720 x 480), with 4x upscaling (ultra), i think the 2d DLSS still works better. In VR with ultra DLSS, the edge artifacts are huge, like greater than 5 pixels in width. It does improve the performance in VR like expected but introduces these edge artifacts that don't seem as apparent in 2D.

2022-01-06 17:23:54 +0000 UTCHi JG, you're correct about Mafia II. From my Mafia II post: "Except for a really intense cutscene, the whole game is played from a third person perspective. There are no first person mods available on the web that I know of, because MDE2 seems to have no headless models and no way to hide the main character. However (and this is the interesting part, on which I would love your feedback), I tweaked all the camera parameters to bring it up close and personal to Vito and his car, and to me now it feels really immersive, almost like 1st person. I always loved games (like the older Assassin's Creed titles, before the series went astray) where the camera hovers really close to your character." About Mafia I and III, I already have the camera rotation compensation partially working, it's going to be there in the next release (in a few days)!

2022-01-06 08:11:48 +0000 UTCYes, the game is much less polished than monsters like GTA V or RDR2, so for instance during cutscenes you will see a lot of weird stuff in parts of the virtual set that were not supposed to be visible by the scripted camera, like floating cigars that smoke themselves, missing car doors and house roofs and whatnot :-)

I mean, I enjoy the praise as much as the next human being :-) But what really moves me is the satisfaction of sharing with you guys the wonderment of living and playing in those incredible virtual worlds. I fully agree about the situational awareness, it's almost insane to think that most gamers in the world experience their virtual adventures like through a flatscreen darkly, when they could be surrounded by them... one GTA V user once told me that playing with my mod was like having his very own Narnia wardrobe in the basement that he could step through anytime he wanted <3 Yes, of course it takes good hardware to have the best experience. But for me the cost of hardware (even with the horrible GPU scalping rampage, erm, shortage) is perfectly justifiable: building the most powerful PCVR system you can have today costs more or less like a week of traveling abroad, with the difference that with PCVR you can do virtual tourism all year long, and to places that don't even exist on Earth!

2022-01-05 18:01:56 +0000 UTCLuke, you rock and your latest is awesome. Like GTA V flat screen, I gave up on HZD flat screen about 20% through, just got tired of it. With your VR mod, I finished GTA V because VR just made it more immersive and easier (finally win those races). Now with HZD, I'm just simply blown away and redundant tasks are not tiresome in such an incredible VR world. Graphics wise everything is maxed and your mod is working flawlessly. Of course, with latest high end hardware and Valve Index, I can really enjoy your work. You make HZD appear made for VR. I played GTA V mostly in 3rd person, and HZD the same. VR just improves the 3rd person view experience by leaps and bounds. VR incredibly improves situational awareness and targeting with the head set can't be beat. You have broke me now. I use VR for race sim and flight sims. Used a 75 inch OLED TV for gaming. Now it is going to be VR for everything from now on. Forget flat screen. You killed it. Thank you so much!!! Keep it up!
2022-01-05 16:38:07 +0000 UTCHey G. Yam, no worries and thank you for being straightforward about it! The 2060 super should not actually fare so bad... What fps do you get in RDR2 with DLSS turned on?

2022-01-05 12:37:46 +0000 UTCHi Luke I want to thank you here for your great efforts for the PCVR veterans. Nevertheless, I have to say goodbye to your project for the time being. It has two / three reasons. First, the games you chose are unfortunately an overkill for my little 2060S. Second, I can't keep up with all of the accumulated mods and games at the moment. And thirdly, the 10 euros are currently (in view of the two points mentioned) a bit of money for me personally. But I'll be back as soon as I've finished my pile of shame. Please go on ... and please consider your game selections a little. No question about it ... RDR2 is one of the best VR experiences you can get. But I can only take a gentle walk there. Mafia2 is hardcore horny for me. You know we players always want to have the best, nicest, greatest experience ... but what we want is not always realizable. It is of course very, very fair and nice of you to give us a choice as to which your next project should be. But please also keep in mind that performance and playability should not be neglected. Your mods are very impressive music of the future for me. Until I owned a 4060s or something like that. Thank you Luke!

The MOD is awesome, the graphics are awesome, level desing is awesome, but I get bored instead of scared roaming around. Regarding HZD, I played it with a 2080 Super, mix of high/medium settings, 2430x2430 with DLSS quality, it looked nice to me

2021-12-29 06:49:46 +0000 UTCHey guys, just joined a couple of weeks ago to try out RDR2. I'm running a 3080 at ~1950MHz and a 10700 at stock, with an Index for my headset. I get 70-80 FPS on the Low preset, 30-40 with Ultra, and ~60 with HUB Optimized. Does anyone do any better than this? I'd be delighted to be able to hit 90! By the time I got to the part where Arthur scraps in the mud with the big fella, I was starting to feel like I'd taken a few to the head myself!

2021-12-29 00:40:41 +0000 UTCNew here today. RDR2 is cool, but CP77 is the most exciting news - love that game, and would love to see it in VR. The online worked ok in Vorpx. - keep up the good work.

2021-12-28 23:36:27 +0000 UTCHello Luke, is there a way to control the mounted machines in H: ZD like the way we control the horses in RDR2? The view is not fixed with the machine forward viewpoint. Instead, when turn the machine the view stays fixed. All this is in first person perspective.
Derrick taylor
2021-12-28 13:18:31 +0000 UTCI think it will be fine, the 3d implementation was geometry 3d which halves FPS, Luke's mods use alternative eye rendering which maintains most of FPS that you would get on a flat panel. I didn't vote for cyberpunk but it was the clear winner and will be interesting. I am sure Luke will be able to do it. If he adds the same features via the same methods as his framework then it will be great. It is not a great open world game but is a good action game set in an open world.

2021-12-26 15:46:06 +0000 UTCWith the release of vorpx attempt at Cyberpunk falling flat. Due to breaking the cardinal sin of letting you artificial rotate your view on the Y axis as well as performance issues all around. I'd have to request that you abandon wasting time on that game. It's not ready for VR. I would instead like to request that you expand into a different genre entirely. X-Com, Enemy Within. Or if you want to stay focused on 1st/3rd person WASD format games. Elder Scrolls Online.
2021-12-26 15:39:46 +0000 UTCI got to say…I’ve been in vr for going on 7 years since gearvr innovators edition and the oculus dk2. I’d doubt I’d be into it still without lukeross mods…making non vr games into fluid smooth native looking vr experiences. I’d easily say Lukeross knows more what the gamer wants, cares about and the know how to port them titles into comfortable vr. In my opinion Jesus Christ is our sole hope. c

2021-12-26 09:43:43 +0000 UTCHey there! Thanks for all the hard work on getting these mods together! I wanted to ask about an issue I'm having with RDR2. I have the Epic Games Store version, running an Oculus Rift headset. After following the installation instructions, my game will launch in a square window on my desktop but won't appear in my Oculus headset...so no VR. Any ideas for what's needed to get it running in VR? Thanks!

2021-12-26 02:31:07 +0000 UTCThanks Luke for another wonderful VR mod! Glad to hear that Pimax finally provided you with a headset to work out some of the Pimax 8kx bugs(like low frames i.e. the REAL frame doubling not working on RDR2 or HZD although it worked on the Mafia series and the aim being off from where bullets hit) but I still enjoy playing them a ton in the meantime. Keep up the good work and looking forward to more!
2021-12-26 00:15:25 +0000 UTCBased on the forum posts... it's not good. Which is fine because Vorpx is good at retrofitting VR on to other/older titles which no other service does. But it seems like performance is terrible coupled with lots of distortion and halo effects. It also seems to suffer some Vorpx quirks... like it being a real roll of the dice if the mod will even hook into the game on launch. Some internal Vorpx functions are basically hard coded to certain keys or gamepad buttons so some actions (thumbstick clicks for example) bring up Vorpx context menus (as such, people are reporting it is impossible to complete the tutorial without digging through vorpx debug menus to unbind certain fuctions). Index users also are reporting a letterboxed viewport. Seems like a case of something that's better than nothing. That said, I wish Ralf the best though. He has been doing good work for a decade now. Just don't think vorpx and cyberpunk are the best of matche, though I appreciate the effort.

2021-12-24 11:02:17 +0000 UTCHi Luke, just wanted to say that I’ve been into VR since 2016 and I have finally realised that one of my favourite ways of playing games is with a game pad. Obviously when a game such as Half Life Alex comes a long then it’s magical, but these games are too few and far between lately on PC. When people say that VR can’t be immersive with a game pad just don’t appreciate the fact that sitting down, chilling out and playing rich story driven content such as RDR2, Mafia, HZD, Alien Isiolation. Is in my mind much more immersive than playing 90% of stuff with motion controllers out there and it’s all thanks to the likes of you, who put in the time and effort to bring these epic games to us. My only regret is I wish I would of become a patreon earlier, but better late than never. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Luke.

2021-12-24 08:09:48 +0000 UTCHey John, for Aloy popping up you can just recenter from the mod overlay (the headshake gesture doesn't work with Pimax headsets). If that's not enough for you, you can also adjust the front/back offset of the camera in the "HZD" tab. Quoting from the linked post: "Due to a bug in the SteamVR driver for WMR that has been outstanding for many months, with WMR headsets like the Reverb G2 you will need to use OpenXR. Select the OpenXR renderer from the "R.E.A.L. VR" tab; the mod will save and remember your choice for the next runs. If you still have tracking jitters after that, get the OpenXR Developer Tools for Windows Mixed Reality from the Microsoft Store, and use them to check that your active OpenXR runtime is set to WMR (if it's set to SteamVR, tracking might still not work correctly). Then, in the developer settings page of the tools, you should make sure that Custom render scale is set to 100% and that Motion reprojection is Disabled."

2021-12-23 04:45:57 +0000 UTCHi Luke, I get frequent Crashes with RDR2 with the following showing up consistently just before a crash: 21:22:05:762 [RENDR] | WARN | Poses not available: skipping submit 21:22:10:512 [RENDR] | WARN | Poses not available: skipping submit 21:22:10:513 [RENDR] | WARN | Missed TAA frame 21:22:10:541 [RENDR] | WARN | Poses not available: skipping submit 21:22:10:541 [RENDR] | WARN | Missed TAA frame 21:22:10:574 [RENDR] | WARN | Missed TAA frame 21:22:10:607 [RENDR] | WARN | Missed TAA frame 21:25:26:774 [27472] | WARN | Game might be frozen (not presenting for one full second) 21:25:26:774 [27472] | WARN | > 278 asset loading ops detected, 1 still stuck 21:25:30:777 [27472] | WARN | Game has been frozen for 5 seconds now: killing the process 21:25:30:924 [27472] | INFO | Exiting ... 21:25:30:924 [27472] | INFO | Uninstalling 426 hook(s) ... 21:25:31:995 [27472] | INFO | Finished exiting. Any idea why the asset loading might be causing so many issues? The game is playing off a dedicated M2 SSD. Thanks!

2021-12-23 02:30:57 +0000 UTCThis is very cool. Just finished playing for over an hour (Oculus Air Link with an Oculus Quest 2. I wonder if there is a way to get the (3d?) audio to the speakers of the headset?

2021-12-23 02:23:02 +0000 UTCok so i added the update and ran the batch file. When I load save it puts me in the middle of a giant dessert with campfires everywhere? Was I supposed to keep or delete the files when asked when running batch file?

2021-12-23 01:33:52 +0000 UTCI have to say very clearly that it is unbelievable what the hatch has created for all of us supporters, if I sometimes read 10 € or dollars a month is too expensive then I ask myself why do you buy VR glasses when you are already at 10 € howls when you look at what game manufacturer does for VR, it's almost nothing except such small snippets of games, there are few big good games like .Alyx MOH etc. what Luke does here is exactly what many have always wanted, me I have been a supporter of Luke for a long time and I will stay that way. I am simply grateful for what has been made possible for us here, I wish everyone a merry Christmas and you Luke especially and relax. Greetings from Germany

2021-12-23 01:31:59 +0000 UTCre: RDR , Just wanted to say this update has a huge perceived performance gain due to the prediction rewrite. Also, I had turned TAA sharpening up beyond what realconfig sets to mitigate blur , and that caused lots of crashes, so if anyone is doing that, know it can ruin stability. Awesome update, Luke! ''

2021-12-23 01:25:21 +0000 UTCWhat device are you playing on? Did you get the game on steam, epic or gog? Are you getting any errors?

2021-12-23 01:09:53 +0000 UTCI had just started playing HZD in pancake mode (albeit in 32:9 and HDR) after their latest patch finally resolved the constant CTDs I'd experienced with the game. Was really impressed after only a couple of hours of playtime. It really is a visual tour de force and stands up there with Microsoft Flight 2020 as a best in class implementation of HDR (maybe COD Black Ops Cold War too but unfortunately it's a very uninspiring game imo). So, when Luke announced his VR mod it was just the best festive surprise. I thought this game was good in 2D. Omg, in VR it's absolutely next level. Luke...each new title you work on just raises the bar again. Such a solid implementation. Spent a lot of time messing around changing resolution/render options etc and completely rock solid. That's the most impressive thing about what you're achieving here. Your integration feels almost native, like it was always meant to be that way :D

2021-12-23 01:03:36 +0000 UTCThank you Luke enjoy a break over Christmas. Justt wondering how difficult would it be to add convergence and divergence sliders that can be adjusted by users? I quite like having convergence higher and making the 3d stronger. This was a thing back on vorpx that I used to like using.

2021-12-23 00:07:35 +0000 UTCIn 2 days Ralf (The VorpX guy) is gonna launch a free mod for CP2077. If the quality is good, maybe it would be better if Luke worked on another game ...

2021-12-22 23:11:59 +0000 UTCPlayed about 15 hours of HZD now (3080/10700 + Quest 1) and its been absolutely incredible. The scale of the towering machines is exactly the thing that VR can convey that you simply can't achieve on a flat panel. The three issues I've had (wanting a third person toggle key, jitter in the camera turn, and the odd HUD jumpy thing) have all been addressed in this patch! Thanks heaps for bringing this to VR. My favourite so far.
