Workarounds to keep playing in VR
Added 2021-07-13 21:22:40 +0000 UTCAs you know, the DLSS update to RDR2 has broken all mods based on ScriptHookRDR2, including mine. However, it's possible to keep playing in R.E.A.L. VR by downgrading the game, or by avoiding the update. Whichever method you use, after the downgrade you might need to run RealConfig.bat again, because the system.xml format has changed a bit in the latest build.
Rockstar Social Club version
The Rockstar launcher insists for the game to always be updated, otherwise it will show you who's boss by refusing to let you play. However, after many trials, I discovered that you can show it who's the boss's boss, by tricking it into believing that the game is updated when it isn't.
You'll need the following files from the previous version: appdata0_update.rpf; index.bin; RDR2.exe; shaders_x64.rpf; update.rpf. The only really big one is update.rpf (4.4 GB), the others are about 300 MB in total. Once you have stored these files in a safe place, let the game update, until the launcher shows the "Play" button. Close the launcher (important step), then open it again: the button should still read "Play".
At this point, the trick is to downgrade the game WITHOUT exiting the launcher anymore. It won't check the files again. To downgrade, just copy those 5 old files I listed above into the game folder, overwriting the 4 of them that have updated versions. The "Play" button will still be there, and the launcher will let you play the old version, without the need to go offline, disconnect from the Internet or anything like that. It might complain about unexpected files, but as long as you don't try to play multiplayer, there's no risk of getting banned.
Each time you quit the launcher or reboot your PC, the procedure has to be repeated, because when you restart the launcher it will again force you to update. Pretend to comply, and when it's finished swap the files under its nose ;-)
Steam version
We have a solution for Steam users too, thanks to Patron VirtualmisterL. I quote directly from his comment:
"I have the previous steam version running in vr. What i did was did NOT load steam. I loaded the game straight from the rdr2.exe in the game folder & signed in, clicked auto sign in & remember me. Then it told me I didn't own red dead online. So I then loaded the playrdr2.exe, then clicked red dead redemption2 online from rockstar my library, then clicked the play on steam tab. It loaded in vr then loaded steam in the background. so then I closed steam quick to prevent it updating any further. Its now still running in vr Yay. Hopefully this will keep working as long as I don't allow the update to download. But we will see"
Update: Patron doun 1025 made an awesome video tutorial for Steam users, showing a downgrade method that works even if your game has already updated, and it doesn't require you to have made a backup of the game folder beforehand. Check it out if you have RDR2 on Steam!
Epic version
Many thanks to Miguel Augusto for sharing the following solution:
"1. Backup and delete the new update_#.rpf files and all others mentioned;
2. Copy all mentioned files (except index.bin, which wasn't there in the previous version also) from backup previous to new version, back into game's folder;
3. Run RealConfig.bat once again;
4. Open Epic Games Launcher, as always;
5. Should still say "Launch" in the game, so just click it and enjoy the game :)"

I had to switch to 2d to get fishing to work. When using the mod reeling in doesnt work. Soon as i switched to 2d i could reel the fish in

2021-07-25 09:55:41 +0000 UTCI'll keep trying to work it out but can someone confirm that the binoculars and zooming is working properly? I've got to a mission where you need to zoom in using your binoculars and the usual left stick zoom doesn't work at all using the VR mod (ie the zoom doesn't change at all).

2021-07-23 17:56:41 +0000 UTCI did that and now there is a lot of less jitter, thanks. Now I'm wondering why do I have poor fps, the resolution is 1080p and settings are on High (rtx 2080 super)

2021-07-22 09:18:19 +0000 UTCHi Iker! Due to a bug in the SteamVR driver for WMR that they never seem to get around to fixing, with WMR headsets like the Reverb G2 you need to use OpenXR. Select the OpenXR renderer from the "R.E.A.L. VR" tab in the mod overlay; the mod will save and remember your choice for the next runs. If you still have jitters after that, get the OpenXR Developer Tools for Windows Mixed Reality from the Microsoft Store, and use them to check that your active OpenXR runtime is set to WMR (if it's set to SteamVR, tracking might still not work correctly). Then, in the developer settings page of the tools, you should make sure that Custom render scale is set to 100% and that Motion reprojection is Disabled.

2021-07-22 07:33:39 +0000 UTCI already did that, but I want to play in stereo, with real 3D. I don't know what is causing so much jittering, maybe it has something to do with the Windows Mixed Reality?
Iker
2021-07-22 07:14:32 +0000 UTCIn the VR mod menu, switch to Open XR and then stereo mono and then try other settings. Or in Steam VR resolution down to max 60-70%
2021-07-21 23:20:52 +0000 UTCI finally managed to get the previous version of the game and got it working in VR. I`m using the HP Reverb G2 and don`t know why I get very low fps (I have RTX 2080 super & Ryzen 7 3700x) and when I move the head it`s jittery as hell, any solution?

2021-07-21 10:22:18 +0000 UTCHad the same question, replace (username) and (password) including the parentheses with your steam account details. It should then run properly. So -username ?????? -password ?????. My .bat file looks like this without the usr/psw: dotnet DepotDownloader.dll -app 1174180 -depot 1174184 -manifest 5387703447066113687.

2021-07-20 05:24:58 +0000 UTCWhat would happen on the rockstar version if it already got updated? is there a way to retrieve old files?
2021-07-19 22:36:18 +0000 UTCYes Ed, as usual you're right on the money. That is one of the many "improvements" that Rockstar put in this miraculous update :-) It's probably just a bug, but it sure feels like they wanted to make REALLY sure that everybody switched over to DLSS. I'm working as fast as I can to fix everything, but this update is the gift that keeps on giving.

2021-07-19 20:05:51 +0000 UTCQuick test and no joy here also. It seems RDR2 insists on booting with Render Scaling "off". A change in graphics settings to 2.0 ("2o1" in the XML) or manual change to the system.xml (even set to "Read Only") doesn't seem to override the game's insistence to reboot with render scaling "off" - even though - the "Read Only" XML doesn't change from 2.0 RS. It's my understanding that since the RealVR mod cannot work with it off, we still get 2D. Presumably Luke is running this up the flagpole as we speak, so we'll see what shakes.
2021-07-19 19:50:12 +0000 UTCit still shows 2d in vr mode. I have steam and it is a big vr 2d screen in game.

2021-07-19 15:50:19 +0000 UTCI had an idea/request. In one of the upcoming updates do you think you could make it so one of the views when doing the cinematic camera while traveling on the horse is in first person? The other views are a bit nauseating and it would be nice to just let the horse follow the path and enjoy the views.
2021-07-18 22:32:13 +0000 UTCFollow the video tutorial in the post from "doun 1025" to download the earlier version of RDR2 from your Steam Library. You will need to overwrite the files in you RDR2 folder with the earlier version files. You will need your Steam Login info to get the files. Also this is probably obvious...but save a copy of the earlier version files somewhere on your computer so you copy them over again when the game updates in the future.

2021-07-17 06:06:30 +0000 UTCI'm in the same boat with it only appearing in 2D. I've followed the link that 2 people posted with no difference. Seems like the resolution scaling isn't right and not sure how to get it back to how it was? For the person who got it working I'm guessing they have something on theirs that I don't? This is the only mod I'm running rn. I'm using the Steam version. FYI no I haven't updated. I backed up my files and am using the Steam method that is posted. I can get the game running in VR but only in 2D to clear any confusion.

2021-07-14 06:12:45 +0000 UTCA bit of clarity for those users WHO’VE BEEN AWAY FOR A FEW DAYS – or – those asking where to GET THE FILES Luke mentions above for the “5 Files” fix R* version of the game. The idea is to pull them from a backup of the game, performed before today’s update (which has been highly recommended here over the past few days as a precaution for just this situation). That said, if you didn’t backup the previous version, and have already launched and updated the game, you may be SOL (for the moment anyway), as the update overwrites those 5 files with new ones (except the 4.5GB “update.rpf” which apparently it just deletes). SO IF YOU HAVEN’T BOOTED THE GAME AND UPDATED IT YET – THEN WAIT! BACKUP THE GAME FOLDER FIRST (or at least the 5 files needed for the workaround). Then you can proceed to let the game update and you’ll have the “old” files on hand to do the workaround.
2021-07-14 06:02:02 +0000 UTCI'll wait for the real fix

Momentum
2021-07-14 01:11:13 +0000 UTCJust a thought Luke, and CORRECT ME IF I’M WRONG but... I think R* version users (& Steam?) should be reminded to run their RealConfig.bat again before trying the “5 Files” fix, because as I saw it, the update resets the "system.xml" file render scaling to "off" (1o1), and unless they do this they will not boot into VR, correct? Might save someone some grief perhaps? They’ll of course lose their 2 new DLSS entries in the XML as well, but when a Scripthook/RealVR permanent fix is found (if it can be) I assume you’ll address that in the 5 XML templates in the settings folder. Anyway, based on what I saw in the XML immediately after the update I thought I'd mention it.

2021-07-13 23:08:05 +0000 UTCI jumped for joy when I saw the R* version "copy these 5 files" workaround Luke! Just tried it and I can quantitatively confirm it works without a hitch on my system. Haven't played for an extended session yet to see if anything peculiar crops up, but was able to boot into VR as usual with no immediately noticeable issues or performance hit. DLSS is not present of course as this is essentially a "revert to previous version" trick, but it beats no VR! I also backed up the 4 new files that this fix overwrites, and then after exiting the game, I returned them to root folder, and "overwrote the overwrites" (thus restoring the new game files). This seemed to allow the R* launcher to boot up immediately without having to update them on a second launch. Leaving the 5th file ( the the 4.5GB update.rpf) in the root folder wasn't an issue, and (at least the one time I tested it) the R* launcher didn't delete it either (as it had on the initial update this morning). That'll make things quick and easy each time. This fix only takes seconds to do, and will work fine (for me at least) for as long as it has to.
2021-07-13 22:49:15 +0000 UTCTAA won't work with DLSS. I already tried, and both Resolution Scale and all forms of antialiasing are automatically disabled by the game when DLSS is activated. Also, I did some preliminary benchmarks, and the actual performance gains at VR resolutions are around 15%, unless you select "Ultra Performance" mode which gives you about 30% frame rate boost but lots of artefacts.

2021-07-13 21:53:28 +0000 UTCI'm patiently waiting for the scripthook fix and subsequent DLSS fixes you'll have to do before I begin my RDR2 VR playthrough in earnest. It is so close, keep up the good work and I hope these last few fixes aren't too hard. Really hoping that in addition to the crisp visuals from last weeks' TLSS fixes the DLSS fixes provide a nice framerate boost... In the meantime, I fired up my Alien Isolation in VR the past couple of nights and am really enjoying that. I know that isn't Luke's work, but just sayin' folks could take a breather, find something in their backlog and give him the time he'll need to get this thing fixed up.
