Version 1.3.1 EARLY ACCESS
Added 2021-07-08 20:53:57 +0000 UTCThis is a hotfix release for a problem that was affecting some users with the previous 1.3.0: having "Fix TAA for Stereo" activated was causing severe frame rate drops, especially in town streets when several NPCs were in view.
Huge thanks to many Patrons (above all Ed Truthan, Clint, Miguel Augusto and others) who helped me narrow down the issue with their tireless testing and detailed reports. It turns out that recent NVIDIA drivers introduced a silent, undocumented change that could make the fix perform horribly. I was personally unable to reproduce the issue because I was still on 461.72; I am often sluggish with driver updates, precisely because they tend to break stuff at random and I need my PC to always perform reliably instead.
Now the fix should behave as was originally intended, i.e., without any measurable performance impact, only luxurious visuals :-)
CHANGELOG
v1.3.1:
- solved a performance problem with the TAA fix that affected some users on recent NVIDIA drivers
v1.3.0:
- completely fixed TAA for Stereo rendering (no more shimmering or haloing artefacts around characters and nearby objects)
v1.2.0:
- experimental automatic heading control for first person on foot, a.k.a. head-oriented locomotion (opt-in)
v1.1.0:
- fixed the crosshair depth when the mod is launched with rendering set to monoscopic
- implemented camera rotation compensation for smooth turning
v1.0.3:
- changed gamepad hooking to better support the Steam version of RDR2
- fixed an issue where the settings file could not be written because the destination folder did not exist
v1.0.2:
- fixed aiming (crosshair position and depth) for base window resolutions larger than 1080x1080
- increased the detection sensitivity for the "squeeze both triggers" gamepad gesture
v1.0.1:
- fixed a bug that could make the mod unusable for Patrons with an AMD graphics card
- optimized GPU usage (on most systems this should bring increased fps, more stable VR view, more fluid capture for video streaming, etc.)
- increased resolution scaling for the Very high preset from 3:2 to 2:1
v1.0.0:
- initial release

2021-07-17 13:00:26 +0000 UTCSame here. always when i start the game it works in valve index but just not vr, flat 2d big screen :/ I ran it on steam and without steam (starts in steamvr still) Like the game theater option would be on, but it isn´t..
2021-07-17 12:06:29 +0000 UTCI have a valve index and the game is on my E driver which is an external drive.

2021-07-17 02:27:02 +0000 UTCI keep getting a 2D flat screen version of the game in big vr type screen. I put in the latest scriphook for RDR2 and still the same thing a big vr screen of the game in 2D.

2021-07-12 06:45:44 +0000 UTCI could pass the Lenny mission without problems. But yes, unfortunately this game is much more crash-prone than GTA V, and it also seems that different people with different systems experience crashes/freezes in different points of the game, so it's very hard to find any root cause
LukeRoss
2021-07-12 06:45:01 +0000 UTCHi I'm really enjoying this mod! Unfortunately I can't seem to get past the bar mission with Lenny. Every time it will either crash the game or crash my PC. I've had very few problems otherwise but this mission seems totally F'd. I'll keep trying in hopes I get lucky and it'll let me finish it. (Update) I was able to complete the mission an hour later after deleting the VR files and reinstalling them. Then I just turned off the headset and used my monitor like normal. No problems after that even with the mod files installed. Not sure what happened but just letting you know man.
2021-07-12 05:42:47 +0000 UTCI followed all the steps, but I cant get this to show up on my Valve Index headset. Do I turn on SteamVR first, then start up the game? When I do that it warns me "RDR2 does not support VR."
2021-07-12 02:26:08 +0000 UTCThe only 100% safe way to play online is to remove all the files that you extracted for the mod from the game folder. As Rockstar themselves say when you try to go online, any non-recognized file in the game folder might get you a ban. That is true of all mods of course, it's not VR-specific.
LukeRoss
2021-07-11 10:53:18 +0000 UTCGreat work! Is there a way to quickly switch the game back to 2D? I just want to play RDR2 Online and affraid to be banned.

2021-07-11 10:42:09 +0000 UTCThis has been discussed on https://www.patreon.com/posts/52681705 at length, but to save you time I'll copy-paste my reply here: I might try again in the future, but I have to tell you: with my GTA V mod I spent a good amount of time trying to stabilize scoped rifles, and nothing ever seemed to work. Neither multiplying the view angle for a reduction factor, nor dampening the oscillations with a temporal filter, nor adding hysteresis give good results. That is not because of technical difficulties, but because having the camera "almost" do what you command it to do is incredibly disorientating and nauseating. The workaround I usually use is to dial back the zoom factor a bit (easy in GTA V, while with RDR2 you need to select another weapon with less magnification) and to rest the back of one hand against the headset to physically dampen the vibration. Although, it's a nice way of visualizing your heartbeat :-D

2021-07-11 09:08:22 +0000 UTCI've had a lot of disappointment with VorpX. There are a few games that it works well with (mainly Bethesda Game Studios games) but the majority of games don't work well in full VR. It also doesn't help that the dev/s seem to do as little as possible to make the experiences good, and often just copy over community profiles and use them as the official profiles. It was worth what I paid to play the older Elder Scrolls and Fallout games in full VR, and it's cool to play third person games in 3D, but I wish full VR worked properly with more games.
2021-07-11 07:18:38 +0000 UTCI feel so stupid paying for Vorpx before finding your mod. It's incredible.
2021-07-11 06:19:14 +0000 UTCWhen using a scoped weapon there is so much shaking that I cannot hit anything. When not using scoped weapons its fine, just seems like all head motion is massively amplified when using a scope. I was wondering if there is any suggestions on any setting I can change so that I can better use scoped weapons (or if this is happening for anyone else, its also true of the GTA V mod)
2021-07-10 22:27:37 +0000 UTChey i just fired this up and it worked incredible. I really wanted to just say thanks for all your hard work. i loved the GTA mod!!
Scot
2021-07-10 22:26:03 +0000 UTCGood job on the mod! However I have an issue. I have WMR and 3080TI, fps is high, however the stutter of moving head is unbearable and is exactly the same as in Gta V version of the mod. Motion reprojection is off. Can you please assist me with this one?
2021-07-10 21:48:56 +0000 UTCI'm sorry but I cannot possibly fix every combination of settings. Only the presets that come with the mod are officially supported. That said, the game looks pretty bad with SSAO off, and it only saves 5% performance, so I guess it's not something most Patrons would want me to spend time fixing
LukeRoss
2021-07-10 21:17:56 +0000 UTCHi Samir, thank you so much for sharing your experience!!! In your words you managed to capture exactly the feelings and the sense of wonder that move me to create these mods. Since you have been so open, I will also share with you something that I never said publicly before (hoping the media doesn't catch up on it): when RDR2 first came out, after having loved GTA V so deeply, I was hyped and dived into it with trepidation and enthusiasm... and after a short while I abandoned it because I found it boring. The missions and the general vibe just didn't click with me. When I could finally play it in VR, man, I couldn't get enough of it. I was moved by the story, and singing songs together with the gang, at night around the campfire, was one of the most enticing experiences I've ever had in gaming. It's quite a long game, but playing it in VR, I wished it would never end. As other people have pointed out, it's as if Rockstar actually created this game to be played, experienced, breathed and lived in with a VR headset. I'm just revealing what was already inside it all the time.

2021-07-10 21:11:26 +0000 UTCHee Thanks!!
2021-07-10 20:19:39 +0000 UTCSmall story. So I played RDR2 when it came out and never really got far. Heck, I never made it to even the second camp ground. With the VR mod I finally made it to Saint Denis. I have only seen screenshots of the place because I wanted to see it the first time I played it. But getting to see it for the first time in VR was freakin' amazing. I lost track of time but I wandered around the city for over and hour and was enjoying all the ambient character interactions. I eventually rode out of the city and the timing was perfect because the sun was setting and the train left the town at the same time so it was chugging right along side me as I set out to go get a bounty target. Hats off to the folks at R* that made this game and double hats off to Luke for making the VR mod. The first time I visited Saint Denis is probably going to be a gaming memory I never forget. Also fun little thing to do if you have the VR legs is set the render to Stereo and crank the world size down all the way and pop the camera out to 3rd person. It feels like you're playing with a set of miniatures. Not the way I would play the game but I did some missions like that and it was kinda' cool.
Samir
2021-07-10 20:18:39 +0000 UTCSnap turning is not on the radar for the moment. With the camera rotation compensation introduced in version 1.1.0 there should be no ghosting when smooth turning.
LukeRoss
2021-07-10 17:55:24 +0000 UTCHi! Due to a bug in the SteamVR driver for WMR that they never seem to get around to fixing, with WMR headsets like the Reverb G2 you need to use OpenXR. Select the OpenXR renderer from the "R.E.A.L. VR" tab in the mod overlay; the mod will save and remember your choice for the next runs. If you still have jitters after that, get the OpenXR Developer Tools for Windows Mixed Reality from the Microsoft Store, and use them to check that your active OpenXR runtime is set to WMR (if it's set to SteamVR, tracking might still not work correctly). Then, in the developer settings page of the tools, you should make sure that Custom render scale is set to 100% and that Motion reprojection is Disabled.
LukeRoss
2021-07-10 17:52:15 +0000 UTCHello, thanks for the mod! I have an HP G2 as VR glasses, and Ryzen 3700X RTX 2070 Super 48 GB Ram Asus PRIME X570-PRO I have to switch the stereo (AER) render mode to mono in the VR Mod menu because the image in the VR glasses is trembling and dragging. What am I doing wrong? ghosting when turning left and right...
2021-07-10 15:31:29 +0000 UTCNot sure if its been asked before but is it possible to add snap turning. This would reduse the slight ghosting when turning left and right maybe?

2021-07-10 10:24:13 +0000 UTCPlease use the "Reply to comment" button, otherwise you're creating a new thread each time. What I meant is, from the launcher go to Settings, then find RDR2 on the left to enter its settings page, and choose "Verify game file integrity". Also, to make sure that VR is not a factor, edit RealVR.ini and change AutoStartVR from 1 to 0. This way the game will not boot directly into VR

2021-07-10 10:10:46 +0000 UTCWIG and Luke, thanks. Still not working. Firstly, this is a never-been-played version of RDR2, so it's as fresh as can get, and no other mods... Verify the game files, you mean "Scan PC for supported installs - scan your PC for games supported by Rockstar game launcher and add them to your library"? I ran that, it said "nothing found" even though it's in my library... For some reason my RDR2 folder has reverted back to Read Only and no matter how much I tried to unclick the read-only square it goes back to read-only. I also right-clicked C drive and tried changing permissions that way, but no help. Not sure how much that is or isn't the problem. I might add that when I started up RDR2 and Rockstar Social, it did mention something about noticing 3rd party software / plugin and said something like "Rockstar does not support 3rd party and your game may become unstable" and I had to click OK to continue. Not those words precisely but close... Just tried now one more time, again RDR2 starts but then gives the (awful) message "You are not signed in and cannot play without signing in to Rockstar Social". The only way for me to play RDR2 is to uninstall the VR mod. Hmmm....
2021-07-10 08:31:14 +0000 UTCDo not start rd2 via air link. Open rdr2 by your pc whether it steam or epic. I open mine by epic and if I launch in oculus it does not work but launch by normal pc launcher and that should get it started for you. Also you can try re-running the batch file and reselect your setting L,M,H ect that should sort your issue. If not then reinstall mod following instructions in full. Report back please

2021-07-10 07:10:39 +0000 UTCLuke Ross, new guy here, signed up, downloaded, and followed all the instructions, and now it seems this mod install has corrupted my RDR2. I have RDR2 via the Rockstar Launcher, not Steam. After following all instructions, I go to load RDR2 either click the original icon or the launcher and "play", it never goes into VR (but does say at top of screen "R.E.A.L. 1.3.1 Click Pause on keyboard or double click triggers on game pad to access configuration overlay" and then I get a rockstar error message saying I am NOT signed into Rockstar Social (even though I most certainly am). When I completely uninstalled your mod, RDR2 loads perfectly. When I reinstalled your mod, I again get the same error telling me I am not signed in and therefore cannot play RDR2 whatsoever, and can only exit the game. Again, VR never loaded (WMR just stays at the Cliff House or whatever it's called). Hope you can help -- it's Friday night and I was way looking forward to some 3D Red Dead Redemption2.
2021-07-10 07:05:54 +0000 UTCThe short answer is, it can't work. The long answer is here: https://github.com/LukeRoss00/gta5-real-mod/issues/374
LukeRoss
2021-07-10 06:46:37 +0000 UTCLuke, thank you for the fix. It works! There are still two issues that cause me not to use it: (1) I turn off "screen space ambient occlusion" because it saves me good FPS, but it also messes up TAA fix. Can you possibly fix TAA with "screen space ambient occlusion" off? (2) When I use the TAA fix, I see (slight) weird artifacts where depth of objects shift slightly and become off compared to objects near them. I also feel like different eyes see some (thinner?) objects with different color which create a weird specular reflection (metallic) effect on grass, trees etc.. I actually prefer having slight speckles than this slight color/depth distortion (not sure if I am simply used to seeing specles now or?)... But if you fixed (1), I could give it a shot again to see if I could get used to it. Thank you again...

2021-07-10 04:24:19 +0000 UTCThanks for the fast hotfix! A little off topic, but have you tried making your GTA V mod compatible with this new openvr implementation of FSR (https://github.com/fholger/openvr_fsr)? I originally hoped I could use it for this RDR2 mod until DLSS support arrives, but it only supports D3D11 games, so the next thing that came to mind was your GTA V mod. I did a few preliminary tests and it crashes on startup with FSR's renderScale set to anything less than 1. Setting it >=1 lets me get into the game, and the log file (and fps drop) seems to indicate that something is being upscaled behind the scenes... but I don't believe the mod is sending the upscaled frames to the headset. If I had to guess, GTA V's frame scaling mode is somehow getting in the way. Maybe you or someone else here might have better luck troubleshooting it.
Andy
2021-07-09 19:44:40 +0000 UTCI hope so, but I have no inside information or access to any preview version, so we'll see when the update lands. It might work beautifully with the mod, or it might break it and require me to fix the game all over again. Hopefully Rockstar will do the right thing and not break mods TOO much
LukeRoss
2021-07-09 17:24:48 +0000 UTCNow DLSS has been announced will that work with your most recent taa fix?

2021-07-09 17:06:47 +0000 UTCThat's one of the most intense scenes in the whole game. If you survived that, you can beat the game :-D (Although where's Lenny...)

2021-07-09 16:01:29 +0000 UTCJust had the fist fight in first person with the guy in the bar which carries on outside. Think il do fist fights in 3rd person from now on lol. Way to intense for me in first person and camera is all over the place :). Realy intense in vr

2021-07-09 10:56:28 +0000 UTCOoo maybe I can turn textures back up then. Hey does anyone else have trouble shoulder checking while moving forward on the horse? Specially over the right shoulder?
2021-07-09 01:35:22 +0000 UTCBeautifully said Ed. I could not agree more. These games feel like they were made to be played in VR and I’m so happy Luke has provided us that opportunity. It’s absolutely an amazing feat if you really think about it. I Luke forward to the future?!?

2021-07-08 23:26:36 +0000 UTCThere are once-in-a-generation rarities that come along in gaming. This is one of them. So I just wanted to say… Luke’s devotedness and commitment to improve upon and/or diagnose and fix issues that arise with this mod are praiseworthy. Windows, Nvidia, & Rockstar updates will invariably cause further issues down the line. That neither Rockstar, nor any of the many tech companies that could have potentially reaped profit out of a VR mod for RDR2 showed any inclination to do so, just furthers the appreciation of what Luke has given us here. Immersing oneself via VR in what is arguably the most beautiful, interactive, and realistic open world ever created is that much more enjoyable knowing the hands-on attention of the man - without whom it would not even have existed – is so responsively dedicated. For me at least - the price of a subscription here is an absolute no-brainer.
2021-07-08 22:33:16 +0000 UTCVersion 1.3.1 with the TAA Fix works fabulously now on my system, even with the latest 471.11 Nvidia drivers. No FPS slow-downs, and the game never looked better.
2021-07-08 22:31:53 +0000 UTCThank you to whoever Sussed this out - i have a 3090 and i was INCREDIBLY saddened to have like a 20 FPS experience with TAA fix. Hopefully this sorts it :) what a great experience, and shout out to your GTA V mod - excellent work all around!
