Family Name 6

“Morning Lena, Sam I brought breakfast.”Lena looked at the door at Winn’s announcement seeing the man walking into her office holding a cooler in one hand and a large thermos in the other. Winn was dressed much like the day before with the only difference being instead of the Supergirl symbol on his t-shirt it had a picture of Supergirl flying though the sky with the Tower in the background. It made Lena wonder if Winn only wore Supergirl related shirts. She figured he probably got them for free from Kara as she owned the company that held the official licensing for Supergirl and the Super Friends. That being another business move that Lena had been impressed with. If Lena was in Kara’s position she would have just sold the license to another company and collected the royalties not started her own company to make merchandize. Then again it seemed Kara had the capital to do it and most definitely made more money that way.

“You brought breakfast?”Sam asked.

“Well kind of. It was actually Kara who gave me all this to bring here to share with both of you.”Winn explained.

“Kara sent us breakfast.”Lena didn’t understand why Kara would do such a thing.

Winn set the cooler and thermos on the table by the couch.”She did and you are in for a treat because she made the food herself.”

“Kara cooked for us?”Sam wasn’t what to think of such a gesture.

“Kara isn’t the greatest cook when it comes to most foods but the stuff she makes from her home world is the best. Then again none of us have ever tried anything other than what Kara has cooked for us so for all we know it’s actually horrible.”Winn mused.

“That was very kind of her.”Lena was touched that Kara went out of her way to make them food from her home world.

“She also sent her world’s equivalent of coffee. I warn you it’s quite a lot stronger than any human coffee. The first time I had some I didn’t head that warning and drank enough I got to the point that after four days Alex had to medicate me so I could sleep.”Winn had been careful from then on when he indulged in the beverage.

“Really?”Sam had never heard of anything but drugs that could make you stay awake that long.

Winn nodded as he pulled out various containers from the cooler.”That’s why Kara only shares it with a select few. She worries that it will be too harmful for most people. It even affects most aliens the same way.”

“How does it affect her?”Lena asked.

“Her body isn’t affected by caffeine at all. She just drinks it for the taste.”Winn didn’t mind revealing that much about Kara as he knew it was a question she was asked about often.

“How does she have so much energy then?”Sam couldn’t make it through the day without large amounts of caffeine. She had no clue how Kara who was so busy managed.

“She has other ways of gaining energy.”Winn took the lids off the containers.”Anyway you guys should really try some of this because I doubt you will ever get another chance.”

Lena wanted to press Winn on what those ways were but didn’t want to be rude. Standing from her seat she made her way over to the table and looked at the various food items. None of them looked unappetizing. Although there was one that looked like a type of pastry with different colored rocks on it. Lena pointed to it.”What are those things on top of it.”

“They are candies but not like we are used to. On Kara’s planet sweeteners were imported from other planets so most of their desserts and candy were savory. Only the royals on the planet had access to sweets.”Winn explained.

“Sweeteners were reserved for the royals of her planet?”Lena had to stop herself from asking the dozen of questions she had about Kara’s culture after hearing that the planet had royalty.

“Alex told us when Kara moved in with them she put sugar on every thing she ate. It didn’t matter what kind of food. Even hamburgers she put tons of sugar on them. One of the first investments she made when she got to earth was buying a bunch of land in Brazil to grow sugarcane.”Winn thought Kara’s sugar addiction was funny because they all knew that if they wanted to get Kara to side with them all they had to do is bribe her with candy or baked goods.

“She grows sugarcane?”Sam would never have expected Kara to do such a thing.

“She is the largest distributor of sugarcane on earth.”Winn told her.

“Seriously?”Lena had never heard of Kara’s sugarcane business. Then again she hadn’t really done any in-depth research into Kara’s portfolio.

“Seriously.”Winn confirmed.”Kara is obsessed with sugar. On her planet sugar was of the same worth to them as endohedral fullerenes is to us.”

“Shit.”Lena knew exactly how much that material cost and it wasn’t cheap.

“Anyway so those rocks are considered candy on Kara’s planet. Kara makes them herself and they are delicious.”Winn and the other Super Friends always loved when Kara made batches of Krytonian candy and often begged her to make them for the team.

“I’m going to try one and maybe one of those.”Sam put that on one of the paper plates Winn provided along with what looked like a piece of bread that was a purplish color.”I want some coffee as well.”

“I’ll grab some mugs.”Lena went to the counter on the side of her office were she kept her coffee maker and grabbed three mugs.”Should we put anything in it or do we drink it plain?”

“I like to drink it plain but Alex adds milk and Dreamer likes to put caramel syrup in hers.”Winn told her.

“I think I’ll try it plain first then I’ll decide.”Lena put one of the rock pastries on her plate and poured herself some of the coffee. She sniffed it before taking a small sip. At the first taste on her tongue Lena was almost overwhelmed with how good it tasted.”This is amazing.”

Sam following Lena’s example took a sip as well.”Amazing is an understatement. This is fantastic.”

“Now you see why I had to warn you not to drink too much.”Winn loved the taste of the coffee but had to pace himself.

“Do you think Kara would be willing to tell me who her supplier is?”Lena didn’t want this to be the only time she got to experience the drink.

“Kara doesn’t have a supplier. She grows the plants herself.”Winn didn’t know where Kara grew her plants because she kept the location hidden from everyone including Alex and her adopted parents.

“Maybe I will have to ask her if she will sell me some.”Lena said.

Sam took a seat in the arm chair.”Ask her for me as well.”

“Speaking of asking Kara. I was wondering if you would be able to get in touch with Kara for me to see if she would be willing to set up a meeting?”Lena asked.

“Sure no problem.”Winn set his full plate on the table, took a seat on the couch and flipped open his watch and pushed a green button.

“Hello Winn what can I help you with?”Kara’s voice asked.

Lena jumped at the sound.”You call her with your watch?”

“Yeah it’s the only way to contact Kara directly.”Winn turned his attention back to the watch.”Hey Kara I’m here with Lena and she wanted me to ask you if you would be willing to meet up with her?”

“I’m free most of the day. When would be a good time?”Kara asked.

“How about we meet for lunch?”Lena suggested. She hadn’t expected Kara to agree to meet so soon and needed to take a few hours to polish her pitch.

“Should I meet you at your office at noon?”Kara asked.

“That would be perfect.”Lena easily agreed.

“I will see you at noon then. Now was there anything else you needed Winn?”Kara asked.

Winn looked to Lena and Sam who both shook their heads.”No that’s all.”

“Keep up the good work Winn and let me know if you need me for anything else.”Kara told him.

“Bye.”Winn said.

“Bye.”Kara replied.

Winn shut the cover on his watch.”There you go.”

“I didn’t think it would be that easy.”Lena had expected to have to wait at least a week before she got the chance to speak to Kara.

“Especially after trying to make an appointment with her assistant.”Sam was of the same thought as Lena. She thought they would have to wait.

“That’s because you asked me. Only people who have the watches have direct access to Kara. Everyone else goes through her assistant and they sort through all of Kara’s messages and only tell her about time sensitive issues. The other stuff they just put on Kara’s schedule to deal with later.”Winn told them.

“Who has the watches?”Lena wondered who was considered worthy enough to have a direct line to Kara.

“All the Super Friends and her adopted parents.”Winn was proud of the fact that he was trusted enough to get a watch.

“Not a lot of people have direct access to Kara do they?”Sam would have expected more than that.

”Kara can’t trust anyone else with the privilege because they would likely abuse it. Plus she hates to be bothered for anything unimportant.”Winn explained.

“That makes sense.”If Lena was in Kara’s position she wouldn’t want to have to deal with petty problems. The woman had enough things going on in her life.

“Yeah it does.”Sam picked up the piece bread, took a bite and groaned in pleasure.”I think I know what heaven taste like.”

“Is it that good?”Lena asked.

“It’s better than the coffee.”Sam told her.

Lena took her plate and coffee and took a seat at her desk. Picking up the pastry she took a bite and mirrored Sam’s groan”I think you are right.”

“Is the only way to get these foods from Kara or are they sold somewhere?”Like the coffee Sam wanted a chance to eat these foods in the future.

“You can only get them from Kara.”Winn told her.

“Surely there are other people from Kara’s home world living on earth who can supply these.”Lena said.

Winn smiled sadly at her.”I can guarantee Kara is the only one of her species living on earth.”

“How could that be?”Sam couldn’t imagine Kara being the only one of her kind that traveled to earth.

“Sorry that’s not my story to tell.”Winn wasn’t willing to share Kara’s secrets with anyone. No matter how nice Lena and Sam were to him.

“I see.”Lena had a feeling that there was a tragic story behind Kara being the only one of her kind on earth. A story that was most likely the reason Kara didn’t tell people what planet she was from.

“Does Kara make food from her own world often?”Sam asked.

“I’m not sure what she eats at home but she only usually brings in food rarely or on special occasions like birthdays or holidays.”Winn always appreciated the effort Kara put to give the team good birthdays. He, J’onn and Nia had come to Kara from tough family situations and Kara went all out to show them that they had a least one person who cared for them. Kara was more than just a friend to him, like Nia he thought of her as his guardian angel and looked to her as a mother figure. It didn’t matter that Kara was so young. She had experienced enough through out her life that it aged her well beyond her years.

“Well it was very nice of her to make stuff for us.”Lena once again wondered why Kara put in the effort. It was just another thing to add to the list of questions she had about the alien. It seemed that Kara was more invested in L-Corp than what she said and Lena didn’t know why and that frustrated her. If Kara was any one else she would have said they were trying to take advantage of her situation but she knew that Kara wouldn’t do that. So why Kara put in all this effort didn’t make sense. Lena just hoped one day Kara would tell her why she was doing so much for her and her company.

“Make sure you thank her when you meet her for lunch.”Sam said.

“I will.”Lena had many things to thank Kara for.

“Speaking of lunch have you worked on your pitch?”Sam didn’t mind asking in front of Winn. In fact she thought if anything he might be able to give them some ideas to sway Kara into giving them some money.

“I did. However the problem is I don’t know what to offer her in exchange for the money.”Lena had the same thought as Sam. She was hoping that Winn could give them some help.

“If it’s not to forward would you willing to help us with our pitch to Kara?”Sam asked Winn.

“I don’t know how much help I can be but I’ll try.”Winn didn’t mind helping Lena and Sam. Not only did he like the pair, Kara was a very vocal supporter of Lena. That gave him more than enough reason to do what he could.

“Our problem right now is that not only are we unable to get qualified individuals to work for us, we aren’t making enough money to cover our expenses. I am planning on asking if Kara would be willing to give us a loan but I have two problems that need to be addressed. One I don’t know if Kara can afford to give me the large amount of money I need and two I don’t know what to offer her in exchange for the money.”Lena explained.

“First of all Kara can more than afford to give you money so don’t worry about that.”Winn knew that any money that Lena asked for Kara could easily make back within a day.

“That’s good. How about the other problem? I don’t know enough about Kara’s interest to know what to offer her for the money.”Lena was happy that Kara would be able to afford the loan. She wasn’t sure what she would have done if she couldn’t.

“I honestly don’t think she would want anything for it.”Winn said.

“Surely she would at least want some kind of stake in the company at least.”Sam didn’t think anyone would loan that much money without some kind of incentive.

“Kara wouldn’t take advantage of anyone who was in a vulnerable position and no offense but L-Corp is very vulnerable at the moment.”Winn was honestly surprised that L-Corp had lasted as long as they had.

“No offense taken.”Although it hurt to hear Lena what Winn had said was right. L-Corp was in a very vulnerable position. If they couldn’t get the loan from Kara then L-Corp would have to declare bankruptcy and Lena would be forced to step down as CEO. Then Lillian would take over and Lena couldn’t let that happen.

“That being the case don’t approach it like a business meeting. Go into it like you are a friend asking a friend for a favor.”Winn told her.

“Kara and I can hardly be considered friends.”Lena would like to be Kara’s friend but she was a long way off from claiming that title.

“That’s the thing with Kara. She doesn’t have many friends because people don’t treat her like a regular person. Even those who hate her consider her a god amongst the people. They put her on a pedestal and don’t take into consideration that even thought she is an alien she still feels emotions. At the end of the day she just wants to be treated like a normal person. If you can do that Kara would be more than willing to help you.”Winn knew that Kara would be open to befriending Lena.

“That will be hard but I will try.”Lena wasn’t sure she could treat Kara with such familiarity but she would put in her best effort.

“Trust me it will go a long way in swaying her to help you.”Winn said.

“Thank you for the advice”Lena would have to think about how to adapt her pitch. Pulling up her power point presentation she let Sam and Winn converse without her. She needed to revamp her pitch with Winn’s suggestion in mind as it seemed like she needed to approach this meeting a lot differently. Taking another bite of the pastry Lena wondered what the other kinds of food from Kara’s home planet tasted like. She also wondered what ingredients Kara used because she was almost positive she had never tasted some of the flavors she was experiencing before. If they were from Kara’s home world Lena figured that Kara had to get them from somewhere. Lena figured that meant that Kara still had contacts from her planet. That being true why wouldn’t there be more of her species on earth as Winn said there weren’t. That being something that didn’t make sense to Lena. If Kara was able to get to earth wouldn’t more of her people choose it as well. Kara was considered the most successful alien on the planet. Her story was used as propaganda to convince other species to come here and share their cultures. It would be very advantageous for others of her kind to come here as well. Especially if they had access to the same knowledge that Kara did. Lena held back a frustrated sigh. She had so many questions for Kara but she knew that most if not all would never be answered. She just hoped that one day Kara would open up to her and if not would at least be willing to lend her some money.
