The Story behind the Picture

Christmas is always a strange day for us. On one hand, it’s the day when we miss our families the most. In Europe, it’s quite common that the whole family gathers for Christmas Eve. Especially in Belgium, where we are from, the days around Christmas tend to be very cold and very dark, and although we quite detest that kind of weather, it does create a certain atmosphere that we can long to. The warmth coming from the fireplace, the happiness of the people for being together, the coziness of being inside knowing that it’s such horrible weather at the other side of the door.

But on the other hand, how many people get the chance to celebrate Christmas year after year in tropical places. During the last years, we’ve had Christmas Eves in Malaysia, Uruguay, Honduras, Spain, again Spain (stupid covid), and last year in South Africa. Except for the time in Malaysia, we’ve always skinny dipped on Christmas. How cool is that, right?

This last Christmas in South Africa is also one that we’ll probably remember until the end of times. We were staying in a game reserve, the kind of place where wild animals roam around. On the morning of Christmas Eve, we were invited by a local group of naturists to visit a nude beach, then we went shopping for food and drinks and in the evening we roasted meat on the barbecue and drank wine, while giraffes were strolling around us.

That’s not where this picture was taken though. We always take some Christmas-hat-pictures a couple of days earlier, so they are ready for social media. This picture was taken at a glamping resort that’s right next to a nude beach. The resort is not naturist though, but all the glamping tents are so nicely secluded that we could be naked all the time without anyone noticing us.
