The sad story about Thailand's Death Railway (Kanchanaburi)

The story we'll tell you in this week's video is not a happy one. We travelled to Kanchanaburi to search for a very dark piece of the history of Thailand. By visiting the bridge over the River Kwai and the Hellfire pass, we get an idea of how the Thailand-Burma railway was constructed and why it has cost the lives of more than 100 000 people.

When you have the opportunity, watch the movie The Bridge on the River Kwai' with an all-star English cast. I haven't been to the site, but as portrayed in the movie, it is quite different to 'your' bridge. The movie ends at the Mount Lavinia hotel in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) which I visited at about age nine, a beautiful beach place. For more fiction about WWII in that part of the world - I recommend the novel (and possibly the movie) of A Town Like Alice (The Legacy, in America) by Nevil Shute. Read it in English if you can, the writing is excellent - Shute is/was one of my favourite authors.

This was a very interesting video and a reminder of how awful war is.
