v0.52 Planning - Do we Commit to the Great Rendering Update?

A few days ago I put out a quick-and-dirty demo of a new image/rendering system I want to move over to for Lab Rats 2. If you haven't seen it yet go check out the demo, I also have a full writeup for how it works, the issues it solves, and the new things it will enable!

The move to Live2D will require a significant amount of work. I will need to write new rendering scripts for Daz (the automation is less critical than it is for the current system, but still important). Then I will have to take all of the base images, import them into Live2D, and rig up models for all of the different poses. Once the models are created I will need to rewrite all of the character display code, plus some related to how outfits are constructed, saved, loaded, etc.

I expect this will take about three weeks (ie. the rest of April; this update cycle), but it's very possible something will go wrong along the way. If something does the v0.52 update of LR might have to be pushed back, which I have never had to do before (barring some 1 day delays when traveling took me away from my computer during the release window).

Because of the potential for delays and the fact that the entire update will be focused on technical changes I wanted to make sure I had the community's support. Let me know what you think and leave a comment if you have any questions about the planned changes!

EDIT: I have also finally beaten Elden Ring, productivity should increase as a result.

I'd like to see animation and improved visuals. Is there support for Xray view, more positions/perspectives? The mechanics are really strong, but the immersion could be better.

The rendering system does seem to be better. I think the basic character animation could use a revisit with this new system.

The first is in the mod if you're interested in it, and could be a good way to explore stuff like that until the game is fully updated.

I'd really like more story content, but adding more 3d models and improving rendering also sounds good. I've also been watching Ally McBeal and they have a unisex bathroom and the lawyer guys and girls are always conversing in there. Maybe add a unisex bathroom with special events at work? I also love playing dress up- once I fully hypnotize the girls I love controlling their wardrobe and hairstyles. Maybe implement a photoshoot for girls who run their OnlyFanatic / DikDok.

Ankh of Life

If you're ever going to revamp the renderer then now would be the time to do so, before you accumulate more technical debt and spend time polishing something that's ultimately getting replaced. Personally I'll gladly wait a little longer for better long term results.

Schnoofles

I myself am very much hoping for ass expansion, and this new render technology could be the key to unlocking that.

Killer300

could we have the option for modify size of hip+ass too?

10 to 1 rendering system, not surprised. It's part of making the game easier to update and improve moving forward, as well as making it modder friendly.

IgnusObscuro

I'm completely here for the new rendering system, regardless of whether or not implementation results in delays. And I *suppose* you can be forgiven for losing productivity to Elden Ring. :D

Eschew Shame

I'd like to see more types of clothing and variations. If moving to a new system helps in that goal (you're detailed how your current custom library is high-effort) I am fully in support.

Sooner you get it done the easier it will be I imagine
