January 31st Update

This week saw a little shoring up of the combat system, as well as a stamina system.  Additionally, I've added a couple effects to help notify the player of what's going on, and what they can do.

I've updated the combat system so that the player can remain mobile, yet its still quick to lock aim at a target.  While pressing in the direction of an enemy and attacking will still orient the player towards that enemy, pressing away from the enemy without attacking will now immediately allow the player to disengage combat and move around normally.


What's next is to get some spells that are interesting to test this system out more.



I've also added in a stamina system.  Most spells or abilities will use some stamina, and when that is gone, it will dip into Meridiana's magic power.  As long as the player is careful, they won't have to worry about wasting their magic.  This of course is something that can and will be tweaked as we go, but it gives another layer of protection for the player's magic, and at the same time can control the use or certain skills and powers.



I did also go back in and set up ways to give the player more information about what's going on.  When you sneak up on an enemy, the screen will display what button presses do what(Albeit with my really ugly icons, those are original btw).  When the enemy is dead, it will display the option to loot their bodies. 


Enemies also now have the ability to play animations or sound/effects when they change states.  In game, when an enemy discovers the player, they will let out a hiss to notify the player that they've been seen.   Down the line, the player will be able to tell if the enemies still see them, or are looking for them, or even if they've heard you around a corner. 


I prefer to avoid any type of alert countdown, and I think this is a good way that the player can be notified of what's going on around them.


That's pretty much it for this update, and of course I'd love to hear any comments or suggestions/concerns.

That's actually an interesting idea. Now these icons are god ugly and there is no way I'm keeping them in, but your idea is really cool.

I like the icons' hand-drawn aesthetic. It gives things personality. It looks like the exact opposite of the icons you'd see in the Fable games, which were very clean UI orbs that always seemed oddly devoid of life in a very lively world. It might be a cool idea to play around with the UI being "in character" for Merdiana. Like maybe the UI is how she would doodle on her own experiences and adventures like in a journal? Obviously user-readability and utility would be more important than cuteness, but it might be a nice way to develop the character in subtle but constant way.
