Undertale: Frisk's Journal - Day 7

Today. I went to see Alphys but no one was around. I find a note in the middle of the floor. As I approached it, the door that was always there suddenly opened. As badly written as it was, it seemed to be some confession and if I wanted to learn the truth to go through that door. What’s worrying is that it said “if you don’t hear from me” so whatever this secret she’s hiding could hurt her or worse. So I have to go down there and see if she is alright. What surprised me was that the door was really an elevator. Still working despite Mettaton crashing through that wall. And as soon as I thought that, the Elevator began to malfunction and started falling down. How I survived is anyone’s guess.

I ended up in some laboratory where I believe data entries of Alphys’ past experiments happened. Something about unleashing the power of the SOUL. Monsters SOULs are fragile and can easily break. I’m guessing this is what Sans meant about EXP and LVs: it's not that I’m physically strong is that I’m emotionally strong. If I had the desire to kill them I could and they could do nothing to stop me. That is a horrifying thought to think that basically any mass murderer could cause a genocide if they wanted to. Alphys found something within human souls that causes us to be able to exist long after our bodies give out. She calls it Determination. We obviously have two different meanings but this is her research. Using “Determination”, she hoped that injecting it to monsters will help them out. Instead, the results were horrifying.

Said results are what I call Amalgamates: the monsters of those injected with determination fused together to create a monstrous new thing. But despite that, they’re still similar to the monsters I’ve faced before so I knew how to handle them. But they did surprise me many times, including taking the shape of these lights I’ve been seeing. I continue to look for Alphys throughout the laboratory and reading these Lab Entries that keep opening up. Apparently they also experimented using a vessel to hold a SOUL since the same type of souls can’t absorb each other. With the Golden Flowers around, I am going to guess this is how Flowey was born.

For some reason, there were a bunch of VHS tapes in this laboratory too. I played a few for curiosity's sake (thinking it had something to do with the laboratory) but it turned out to be home movies of Toriel and her family. It's weird that they’re here and not with either one of them. But what’s scary is that there’s a human among them and they look eerily like me. After finding the keys, it led me to the power switch for the Elevator. It was still in working condition, so I thought it was a good idea to switch it on. The Amalgamates thought otherwise. But Alphys found me before anything could happen. Apparently they were hungry all this time. She confessed to me that she feared that she would have never returned because she was too afraid about what has happened to these people. She promises to tell everyone what happened here and return the Amalgamates to their rightful families.

As she left, I realized that she may not be the best person to ask for an alternative solution in facing Asgore. She tried and failed and if I bring it up she may regress. I went my way back to the elevator, the monitors that were turned off were back on. As I suspected, Flowey the Flower was that vessel. I continued on when someone called me. It called me Chara. That was the name of the child that was in the videos. They said thanks to me everything is in place and they’ll be ready to see Chara. As soon as the call was over, the room locked up. Turns out this was an elevator too but much bigger. It rushed me upwards and by the time I got there it pushed me out and was quickly covered in vines. I can put two and two together. Seemingly no choice I take one last look at the light to see if I can find any other way out of it. This time, I saw nothing.

I began to worry but figured if nothing else I could talk my way out of this. Asgore was there watering the plants. When he saw me, his face grew sorrowful and realized what had to happen. He led me to the barrier and told me that I was the final soul needed to free the monsters but for me to be free I must take his soul. And the only way to get that is to defeat him in battle. With no other choice, I prepared to face the King of the Monsters to hopefully find a way out of this. But just then, a fireball hit him. It was Toriel. She was worried about me and realized that she was trying to stop the sacrifices from happening, which should also mean if I decided to actually absorb the SOUL of Asgore. She also called Toriel a coward: saying if he really wanted to free us he would have just absorbed the one SOUL and gotten six more after.

As much as that makes sense, considering how badly the monsters lost to humans I really don’t think that would have helped in the long run. Either he would have died before returning to the Underground or create such a ruckus that the monsters would be whipped out this time. But as they continued talking, everyone seemed to arrive here to stop the fight. Undyne, Alphys, Papyrus, Sans, even Mettaton in a makeshift body. Everyone who was in my vision of the outside is right here. Yet things turned for the worse when Papyrus said that a flower told him to come here. Before Alphys can reply, a giant vine wrapped them all around. Flowey was behind all this. He took the human SOULs and plans to absorb their SOULs as well. Flowey thinks this is some sort of game and that if I “win” it’ll be over. The guy is nuts!

Just like them, I was soon tied up in vines. As he was going to attack me, the others used their powers to block his attack. Soon it was every monster I have met in the Underground showing up to help. Whatever damage Flowey did was gone, it felt me with so much joy to see everyone here to help me. And that quickly went to fear as Flowey was hoping for this. He absorbed all their SOULs and revealed the truth: he was Asriel. The son of Asgore and Toriel. And he plans on using the power of all the SOULs he absorbed to control the timeline. I think those lights I saw he also saw. But instead of using that information he thought he lived them all. So it warped his mind to think that this is all a game and he can just go back and change things. But with the power he is displaying, he probably could if he tried.

Yet despite that, I keep fighting. Maybe Alphys was onto something about Determination. Because despite everything Asriel threw at me I kept holding on and continued to defy his wishes. Sadly, he was only using a fraction of his power to fight me. He changed forms and kept constantly hitting me with these attacks. These attacks hurt more than anything I have ever felt before. I felt like I was going to die, but I refused to. I reached for anything that could help me, but then I saw the light. I reached out towards it and it showed me the way. I don’t need to defeat Asriel, I need to save them. Focusing all of my energy, I managed to reach my friends that were inside Asriel.

They lost their identities, only down to their worst fears. But I reminded them of who they were and slowly Asriel’s power grew weaker. After freeing everyone, I realize there’s still one more SOUL to save… Asriel’s. Trying to heal his SOUL gave me a flashback of the moment he met Chara. Asriel was very close to Chara and all this time he wanted him back. He saw Chara in me and thought if he can control the timeline I won’t get away. But I fought on. He pushed back as hard as he could but I continued to move forward. He’s been suffering for too long and this is the way to help him move forward. Even after using his strongest attack, I kept moving forward.

Eventually, I broke through and revealed the true Asriel: a sad child who missed his adopted brother. He even realized that I was not Chara. Since our souls were still connected, I told him my name. Since he was a heartless flower, he couldn’t feel love like he could now. He apologized and I told him I forgive him for everything. Using the power he gained from the Human and Monster SOULs, he destroyed the barrier and restored the Monsters to back how they were. By using that power, he can’t maintain his form anymore and return to being Flowey. He told me to forget about him, but I hugged him and told him I won’t. As he walked away, everything was back to normal.

I woke up to find everyone around me. All they remember was about a flower and that’s it. It's probably for the best they forget, at least for now. I’ll tell them the whole story in another time. Because thanks to Asriel, the Barrier is down and we all went outside to see the sun. For me it was just a week since I went into the Underground but for them it was too long. It's going to take a long time to bring the monsters back above ground. As nice as the Monsters are, the humans are not going to be as friendly as I was. But I am willing to work with them for as long as it takes before we can have the Monsters leave peacefully among the Humans. And thanks to them, I now have a family I can call my own.
