Undertale: Frisk's Journal - Day 1

Hello. If you are reading this, something must have happened to me. So I might as well tell you my story. My name is Frisk. All my life I felt like no one understands me. Not even my parents, who abandoned me as a baby. The other kids would tease me. The adults looking for a child would be freaked out by me. Even the caretakers fear me. Such isolation can lead you down very dark places but for me, it just made me want to prove them wrong. As the other children played, I stood in our library and studied. I studied math, science and my favorite subject: history.

Learning about the past always fascinated me. Every action we take now was because so many people did so then. Because of heroes, we’ve made changes for the benefit of mankind. Because of villains, those steps forwards move backward. And the most incredible to believe is that no one saw themselves as either. The effects they made on others they will never know. After all, everyone thinks they’re the hero of their own story until hindsight. But there is one story that many people believe is just pure fiction: a legend to sugar coat a greater evil that history wished to hide: The War of Humans and Monsters.

Long ago, two races ruled over Earth: the Humans and the Monsters. One day, a war broke out between the two races. Despite the vast number, the humans were victorious after a long battle. To ensure they can never return, the Humans sealed the monsters under Mount Ebott with a magic spell. It sounds so fantastical, a second race that managed to unite humanity to fight it off. But something inside me believes there’s more to this legend. So on that day I swore I would figure out the truth behind the Legend.

The first thing I did was look for news around Mt. Ebott. The oldest, being a thousand years ago, was a story of a monster who carried a young boy to a village. They attacked him because they believe the Monster hurt the child. Yet the Monster did nothing. Like the War, many dismissed it as being a legend, one that does not make a lot of sense. But what wasn’t considered a legend was the missing children. With the last one happening 60 years ago, it seems there are reports of six missing children around the area. Despite the police’s best efforts they couldn’t find them.

But if this legend is true, they must have found their way into the Barrier and entered the World of Monsters. And on this day, I was going to make my own investigation. Leaving wasn’t a problem, the caretakers see a bunch of kids runaway all the time and they eventually return the next day at latest. In that regard I was no different. It was a long trek to go to Mount Ebott without a bus ticket, but I managed to get there. I managed to climb up the mountain until I spotted a cave. And in that cave was a massive hole.

I wanted to take a closer look to see just how far it goes, but I tripped on something and fell in instead. As you expect, I survived. By some miracle I somehow landed on a flower bed with no injuries as far as I know. The area I fell in looked man made, so that must have meant someone must have created the architecture. I walked down the hallway and entered a door. It is there that I saw a flower. This flower was nothing I had ever seen before. For starters, it had facial features. And more surprisingly, it can talk.

It introduced itself to me as Flowey the Flower. He acted nice and told me about my SOUL. In this world, they apparently attack your soul so any physical strength you may have is worthless. And the Flower knew that when it hit me with its “Friendliness Pellets”. These things look like seeds but they were capable of putting me down like if I was hit by a truck. It told me that as long as I was down here: it's kill or be killed. And I would have been finished if it wasn’t for someone to save me.

That someone was called Toriel and she was the caretaker of the Ruins. She was also a monster. The story was true! There were indeed monsters! But between Flowey and Toriel, it seems there are as many different Monsters as there are Humans. Toriel led me to her home, but passed by something sparkling. Wondering what it is, I went to touch it. And suddenly millions of images flooded my mind. It was mind blowing! When it stopped, I saw at the distance numerous images spread apart like a tournament bracket. But what caught my eye were on the far end of each other.

In one end, I saw myself surrounded by destruction. Something told me to try to head that way; that if I work to achieve that ending, I can get revenge on everyone who wronged me. I will admit, that did sound tempting. But the other end saw me standing over the Mountain with six people standing beside me. They’re covered in shadows, but I felt a warmth from it. As I stepped towards that image, I saw roads in front of me. Showing me actions where I can get closer to it and those where I meet my end. It was like it was showing me the possible futures and ultimately I had to pick the right one to not only reach that ending but survive.

When I made my decision, I was back in the Ruins as if I never left. Just as I thought, everything was exactly what was pictured: Toriel showing me the puzzles and how to deal with the other monsters right down to that surprise attack from a Froggit. So when she told me to stay still, I knew the hardships she was going to experience. So I pressed on ahead. Everytime I see these lights, I get visions of what to expect and how to deal with them. Between that and the advice from another Froggit, I knew these monsters do not mean any serious harm. The fact they seem more afraid than vicious leads me to believe we were the ones to start the war.

While heading to, at the time, I presumed Toriel’s house, I also found out Ghosts exist. He calls himself Napstablook and was ultimately harmless. And even though Toriel considered the Puzzles dangerous, they were surprisingly easy even if I didn’t have future vision. As I arrived at my destination my assumptions were correct. Toriel, after dealing with the dog, was going to surprise me with not only a Butterscotch-Cinnamon Pie but also a room to stay. Honestly, with how welcoming she is and how the monsters are really friendly once you get to know them, I was really tempted to take up her offer to stay.

But something compels me to try to reach that ending. So I am going to sleep for the night and ask her in the morning to move on. I also decided to use this notebook I found as a journal to document my time in the Underground. These creatures have stood down here for too long because of our fears, it is only right to free them and that ending shows it can be done. I don’t know how long it will take, but I swear I’m going to set them all free or die trying. I am Determined to do so!
