Tex is essentially the "source code" for the rendered PDF. It's plain text so you can open and read the files with just about any text editor. However, since they are "source", they are not meant to be read directly but turned into other, readily readable formats, like PDF. So, if you want to read the book, read the PDF. If you want to see how the PDF was "made", look at the Tex files.

There was never epub version. Which is packed collection of HTMLs of course. A5 PDF version was dropped ~5 years ago, because no one really used it.
