NEXZ - O RLY? Album & highlight medley
Added 2025-05-02 20:08:30 +0000 UTCUPDATE: I'm now obsessed with O Rly? after listening with headphones only whilst cycling lol. Ironically the video really distracted me. I think if it wasn't for listening seperately the dance practice would've got me too! I'll try and revisit the rest of the album too!
I was so looking forward to doing this on Youtube but once I heard everything I realised it's best it stays here.
My main critiques are, JYP doesn't know where to take these guys and I think there's confusion over what their USP is and because they don't seem to have a stand out vocalist, similar to Close Your Eyes, their branding seems to be about energy and intensity over good songs that say something or push the envelope in a refreshing way. They're following safer trends but sadly that means they're just like any other generic boy group which for a big company like jyp should never be the case.
It's a shame cos they started off SO strong but it's been downhill since for me. The songs aren't necessarily bad either and some of these songs could've gone somewhere, esp the title track, GOD that pre chorus is AMAAAZINGG and yet they took a predictable safe boygroup route with the chorus.
The same goes for their imaging too, if they're aiming for this vibe then I hope they maintain it.
I'll maybe leave them for a couple of comebacks and return at a later time cos right now i'm not feeling it.

Yeahh i'm looking forward to seeing the dance practices etc! I'm just watching their variety shows now, they're super fun. I've tried listening to the other songs more but nothing is hitting like O Rly? but that's fine

2025-05-05 00:16:05 +0000 UTCI hope you do revisit the album and like it better, because I actually like this project quite a bit. And I'm glad O-Rly grew on you lol. I do have to admit though that my favourite part is watching them perform. I think they make songs to perform to. It comes together fully on stage. Particularly through their dance performance. Like, I'm addicted to the Simmer choreo. It's so good. O-Rly too. I think they tried the music focused approach and realized that they were muting what made them shine which is their performance, so now they're making music that can show off their dancing. Once they start to gain a following, I think they'll start switching up their sound and experimenting a bit.
