ATEEZ Golden Hour pt 2

To save me from writing an essay i'll summarise my thoughts as this.

We need some new producers to expand how ATEEZ produce music. vocally and production wise overall.

Perhaps their current producers COULD do more but KQ has a sound in mind. I'm not loving it and not because it's not my taste because one of my favourite things is enjoying greatness that isn't my taste but simply because it doesn't sound right.

The autotune and yawn type singing also needs to change. As negative as I sound I actually liked this album slightly more than the previous one, I just really need them to find a magic that I see in their peers and I think abandoning the generic hip-hop vibe/lyrics for something with a statement would be great without them reverting back to their previous anthemic EDM.

Enjoy!

Damn, they only care about the artists touring and bringing in money rather than creative fulfilment it seems

Just got around to getting my membership and can’t wait to see your other reactions! I definitely agree with what you’ve said, you hit the nail on the head with the producers comment. Atinys on x are always ranting every comeback about how we need and want change but somehow kq ain’t giving eden or maddox up😒 we are tired too. I feel like we rarely get to hear the boys ACTUALLY sing anymore and it pisses me off. I want to hear range from every single one of them. Maybe get them to work with some SM producers as I like the production from them waaaay more..to sum up I think KQ as a company is not enabling the growth of the boys anymore they just like to send them on tours and hoard money from them. We barely have content anymore too. Wanteez was their own produced variety and that has gone to dust since mid last year too (and the content wasn’t amazing). I don’t know what this company is doing to them to be honest😕 a lot of the time it’s the fans efforts getting them opportunities and not going to lie but it’s tiring..

Hhahhaahaahahahhaahhaahahahhaahha the internet trolls beat away my joy!!!

I was rewatching your old Ateez's reactions when this came out to compare how they've developed sonically, and I actually laughed bc you were so chipper in your old videos like "HEY welcome back to koko3op 😊✨💗" and now you're so over it LOL. Anyway I actually looooved ice on my teeth even though I agree that it should objectively be a one off listen then shelve. I think it's the violin/cello and the fact that (I think) they used real instruments, which is so rare lately.

Kora

Yeah and I think this kinda explains the difference of views with other releases, and the lesser engagment I see on my TL. Even if the fans obviously still love and support the boys, a lot of them came from Gueriila / Halazia/ Bouncy (and bf), and it's just not the style of music they got into. A lot of them like their more intense sound (rock-ish or anthem), with a strong narrative and theatrical concepts. This kind of easy-listening hip-hop sound is not really what got them into Ateez I think... Plus I think that they have been very busy this past year with the festivals, tours and releases (which is very good !) and they haven't really taken a breather, and some time to think about the sound and message they want to put out. It kind of feels like they went with flow of the Bouncy formula and put a bit less creativity on it. Maybe they've been busy and just following the producers, but I can't help but see the difference between this and the songs of the Outlaw album and the b-sides of Will (like It's You, or Silver Light)... I hope they'll have the time to regroup a bit before putting out new releases (but maybe we'll have to wait for the end of the Golden Hour cycle). The discussion for the reneweal is also approching so it could be a good opportunity. Sorry for the long msg, I've been thinking about this release a lot ! ^^'

You nailed it thank you!! This kinda music is the hip hop equivalent of generic pop that everyone finds uninspiring. I also agree about them building everything around the choruses and then cornering themselves in. I feel like people are also confused. Things can be laidback but still interesting musically and these songs just feel meh. Definitely for the US Market too I agree.

Koko3op

Thank you for your reaction, who managed to hit the nail on what I was feeling... I understand they need to evolve and change their sound and vibe (and the MV is honestly chief kiss and reflects their maturity), but the music is simply not as interesting... Like for Work it seems like they got their ambiance and main motif for the chorus and build around. Not a bad formula but doesn't really leave a lot of place for variety. I also can't help but think that this sound is kinda made for an US market, and it kills a bit their identity. A bit disappointed and sad bc I want them to thrive and I don't see Work or IOMT gathering new listeners, really. But well, I hope they find their path and continue to explore while having fun with their music. And yeah, what you said about Eden is very true, he got them at the max of what their sound could, and now you have to mix others influences. Thank you again for your review, it's always a joy to discover an album with you !

Andjelai Lazare

He looked sooo good

Koko3op

Hahahahaa good idea

Koko3op

Yeahh it's starting to feel like a gimmick when they could really expand what they could do vocal delivery wise

Koko3op

Agreed! There's nothing wrong with growing but stay interesting

Koko3op

No it's fine i like comments!! lool

Koko3op

I love Ateez’s anthem type songs the best but I think they are growing and trying new things. It is very “Ateez” not to be boxed into any one type of style. IOMT is a fun and catchy song. It had me from the first few notes and I caught myself singing it randomly throughout the day. The video was so well done. Visuals definitely on point!

MBATNY50

Lol. You constantly replaying Yunho at the beginning was funny and definitely necessary! They posted another dance practice version in suits! 🔥 It's a must-watch!

This was my favourite album since World EP1 (although it might be tied with World EP3 cause that album had a lot of great songs). I do agree that using different producers would be a benefit bc I think it is always good to have someone come in with a fresh new vision, but even then it doesn't mean it will work. Despite that, I actually did not have an issue with how this album was produced. I have never and probably won’t even be a fan of the heavy autotune and so Deep Dive wasn’t in my top 3 on the album, but the production still hit. I was very overstimulated by Ice on my teeth when I first listened/watched bc so much happening with the music, the vocals, the lyrics, the MV... going back and listening to it I feel in love. That production is amazing. It is nice that they scaled things back. I was getting a bit tired of the double time outros with the chanting. None of that here and it was perfect. So mellow. I am quite surprised you didn’t like Man on Fire. I loved the scaled back production bc it just made their voices have that much more impact. Yunho’s falsetto had me melting and when the chorus came in it was exciting. I actually think there was a lot of textures in that song. My second fav song on the album. I am glad you liked Selfish Waltz. It is my fav song and listening to it with noise cancelling headphones on Apple Music made me ascend. I love their songs with this vibe. Cyberpunk, Silver Light, Take Me Home. I would love a title track with this sort of sound. I didn’t watch your reaction to Enough bc figured you probably wouldn’t like it and couldn’t have someone rain on my parade this early in the comeback. Decided to end on a positive with Selfish Waltz looool. Will watch your reaction again later once I have come down off this high. 🤣🤣

Sarah

one thing to note is that they’re definitely working on changing their sound a bit at least. this is the first title track that doesn’t have everyone going crazy by the end of it which is interesting. i also noticed the title track had better line distribution but maybe that’s just me.

PopArtist8512

personally, this is one of my favorite albums from them. i really enjoyed the songs, definitely more than the previous album that i disliked a lot😭 although i loved this album, i agree with your commentary and it would have been great if they had developed the sounds even more! so yes eden definitely needs to go, and i need hongjoong to take over the productions because what he did with selfish waltz was phenomenal in my opinion. i see what you mean with wanting Ice on my teeth (and their new direction in general) to follow the greatness that was their previous eras energy-wise, but i really don’t mind how laidback it is and i kinda wanted them to do that because their previous title tracks had started to become redundant to me, and i like ice on my teeth because i can hear a more matured and relaxed side of them. i particularly appreciated the fact that they are one of the few groups that dare to comeback with a sound that is not so “in your face”. (idk if you have the vision but Enough needed a choir, it would have been even more impactful)

mariame

i know some people say the yawn singing is an ateez staple but i’m so tired of it nglllllllll i want something new! Also can we please get some better english songwriters bc kpop lyrics in english are so unoriginal. I will say tho my main men yunho and san KILLED me…..the styling for everyone was great

bateman bookworm

I agree that this album was overall better than the last but I really miss how interesting their sound used to be - bouncy was like my favourite era ever and knowing their capable of that makes me hope they don't lose that uniqueness - loved hearing your thoughts as always! ☺️

LeeLi_007

I feel like we’re kind of on a path, I feel like every ateez series/era feels like they start to rebuild themselves in a new way from the beginning. They’re always on a constant journey that not everyone will like (some people didn’t like the World Series as much as previous eras). So new sounds would probably not hit for everyone, but I enjoy the constant innovation in this group. Mingi recently discussed that they realized a song doesn’t have to be hard hitting to make impact, and that there are experimenting with it. And honestly the journey analogy kind of fits their concept lol. I will agree that I do wish they utilized different producers more often (they did a lot more than usual this album). And when I say different producers I mean hongjoong and mingi 😭. In contrast to you I think they still sound like themselves just mellower. In my opinion this album is their most replay-able (deep dive been on repeat). I find it still unique in direction, some song genres not very current in kpop. Even though this album didn’t hit for you I hope you still check out the future performances they have in store! Thank you for the reaction! (Sorry this was long, it’s my first time commenting 😭 Excuse my vent.)

CREEPERS

i have the same sentiments about their producers, a lot of their songs have become kind of monotonous to me and lack the replay value i find in their older albums. it’s a bummer to me that they’ve taken a path away from what i really loved about their music, and what i associated ateez with. i think they would really benefit a lot from working with some new producers since they have so much potential to really develop their sound

meg k

Yeahh it'll be great for them to add some umph to the sound

Koko3op

Definitely was not my favorite album, but I did enjoy ice on my teeth and selfish waltz. I get they’re expanding into a new sound, but I still miss the variety they used to have though. Everything is starting to sound the same to me. Hopefully pt. 3 of the golden hour series will be different assuming that it will be the finale😔

Mya Papaya

Me as well! It was my favorite followed by deep dive. I honestly loved this album, it felt so full of yearning and emotion. The lyrics were all beautiful too!

Emily Nelson

And just as well I liked it the most from what I remember!!

Koko3op

Selfish waltz is Hongjoongs baby! He composed and wrote that song 3 years ago and has been sitting on it.
