PARAMORE - After Laughter & Brand New Eyes Album

I WAS curious and finally did it! It's been a long time coming.

I'm glad I started with these albums because they're drastically different but also makes me more excited to listen to the most recent album.

Everyone was screaming After Laughter and I could understand why though after a couple songs it started to lose my attention, it's definitely more of an album to listen to in the background and vibe than be stimulated by musically/production wise. There's still some nice moments here and there though.

Brand New Eyes opens with an INTENSITY that it maintains pretty much through out. Though it's not what I would typically listen to of course, I could HEAR how good the music is and also Hayley's vocals just shined here as well as the drummer and bassist.

ENJOY!

Oh i've mentioned HAIM severalll times. I love their music !! They are the retail queens here lol so it was hard to avoid them in the mid 2010's lol

Koko3op

I am late to the chat. Have you ever listened to Haim!? I feel they have a few songs you would like. I'm basing this off your reaction to Rose Colored Boy. If you haven't listened, If I Could Change Your Mind and Something To Tell You are suggestions.

Jamonica Shoals

my fav band ever i love them sm hayley is an absolute force. once you get to self titled you should check out the raw studio recording of still into you! it’s on their channel and she basically identical it’s kinda wild 😭

sam

I hear this!!

Koko3op

Two door cinema club shout-out! Maybe it's just so nostalgic to me for a particular time in my life but brand new eyes is just ugh so good. After Laughter didn't hit as much for me

Ash

Yeahh she's insanely talented

Koko3op

Hayley Williams has one of my favourite voices ever, she is incredibly talented! I was lucky enough to see Paramore touring BNE in 2010 and she sounds EXACTLY the same live, even when she's jumping all over the stage - it is so effortless for her, I was absolutely floored! haha

life of nicole

I love that you reacted to these! Brand New Eyes is my personal favorite Paramore experience!

SorryIForgot

Thanks for this. I am a big Paramore fan and it was fun to see your reaction to Brand New Eyes. One of my all-time favourites.

Daniel Gee

looking forward to it! thank you <3

Dandara B

Ohhhh I think I'll add to my list and see if there's demand for it!

Koko3op

You're so welcome!! Glad you enjoyed the surprised and yeah that's a great observation. To me it sounded like a Jessie Ware song, especially the tough love album!

Koko3op

When you mentioned Billie Eilish I thought that was interesting because yes she is a big fan and she even performed with Hayley at Coachella. As a paramore fan since 2010, when I heard birds of a feather it instantly made me think of Hayley. The way she sings in that song is so reminiscent of Hayley’s singing style it’s crazy many people haven’t picked up on it. Thanks for this reaction as a big fan of p more and kpop this was a pleasant surprise.

I don’t know if you enjoy brazilian music but I really wish you could listen to/react to Liniker’s new album called “Caju”. Liniker is a trans woman and her voice is amazing! She is part of new MPB (brazilian popular music) and I guess you’d like this album!

Dandara B

I recommend reacting to Hayley’s solo albums “Petals for Armor” and “Flowers for Vases / descansos” !! I feel like you’d probably like

Jesse

OHHH that's a great tip! thank you!

Koko3op

I've always liked paramore and their hits, but have never delved into their discography either so I really enjoyed listening to these two albums with you! I agree that brand new eyes stood out to me a lot more than after laughter and I'm such a sucker for the only exception too haha. Fun fact, when you're on Spotify's lyric mode, if you click on the line of a lyric, it will go back to that specific section of the song. This is very handy when you want to relisten to a line over and over again (I always click on the line right before so there's more of a transition lol).

Haven

omg Paramore!!! BNE is so good

Stella

After Laughter definitely was easy pop, but out of all of the easy pop music, idk it still slaps. It's just the difference btwn music I would let play on the radio, and music I would purchase. This is why = purchase; BNE = purchase; AL = radio. It's also fun to listen back on their transition into new wave now, and appreciate after laughter for maybe contributing to Haley's confidence to take musical/songwriting risks, within new wave, afterwards. BNE is so good. The chord progressions in the pop-punkier songs are a little obvious for the late 2000's, but overall the album is lyrically very truthful and timeless, and vocally just perfectly angsty, soaring, and resonate. Only Exception is also so good for exaclty the reason you said. That song's never gonna get old. (ALSO- yes.. she's one the constant with the group. Paramore's evolution been a bit like Blondie.)

Irene

Yess you said it perfectly. It's not a world I want to sit in for that long!

Koko3op

Nah this is cool thanks! Yeah she really hates that person LOOOL, ahhh okay that makes sense then regarding landslide!

Koko3op

Ohhh okay I'll have to remember that when I do!!

Koko3op

Actually a bit surprised by how much more you liked BNE but it makes sense too. I'll be interested to see what you think about the self-titled and This Is Why, because in a sense I feel like those are a bridge into and out of After Laughter and have the potential to kind of address what you struggled with on that record while still having shades of it. Self-titled started really flirting with the pop direction that AL would squarely land in while still having a foot in their older rock sound, while This Is Why is kind of coming out of AL with one foot still left in it but reintroducing the rock in a different way than their older sound. I definitely see why people can bump up against the uniformity of AL, it's probably still their strongest songwriting in my eyes but even for me it's not a world I want to sit in all the time for as long as that record puts you in it. Self-titled and TIW are more varied, the bigger question mark for me is just what you'll think of the songwriting on a taste level.

loved seeing your opinions on BNE. it feels a lot more pointed and outwardly aggressive than after laughter but i feel both are equally personal. i adore playing god it’s probably my favorite off that album but feeling sorry is just so fun because of how much she hates the guts of who’s she’s singing about (but that’s a whole other story). also it’s really funny that you say that all i wanted reminds you of landslide bc paramore have a song (in the mourning) that has a very similar chord progression, so similar in fact that hayley interpolates parts of landslide when she plays in the mourning live! ok sorry for the huge amount of info!!! i hope im not being annoying or overwhelming you🙏

sage su

i will admit that i was sad about your feelings towards after laughter bc it’s probably my favorite album of all time but i also sort of figured it wouldn’t be your favorite lol. i totally get where you’re coming from on the synth making it feel too same-y but personally i enjoy the through-line throughout the entire album. anyways now onto watching brand new eyes my second favorite 🙂‍↕️

sage su

love paramore so i was so happy seeing this! i love after laughter but i am a fan of safe sounding pop so that checks out haha. brand new eyes is SO good though and the heavier/more rock leaning sound is definitely my favorite. (if you do check out their self titled album i highly highly recommend watching the live performance of last hope in chicago, it’s on the official paramore yt page and sooooo good. definitely one of those songs where the live performance enhances it)

gretchen

Wha! I was pleasantly surprised when I got the notification that you had listened to these albums. I kind of stopped listening after Brand New Eyes. Their newer stuff just didn't resonate as much with me. I was there for their first three albums. Riot was okay, but Brand New Eyes was during their internal conflict and it could be heard. There's a lot of emotion in there compared to their first two albums. If you get a chance, check out their first album "All We Know Is Falling." If had to describe that album, I guess I would just call it raw. You may enjoy comparing Haley's voice from the start to where she is now. There's nothing like a good progression story.
