JIMIN Muse Album Review

JIMIN!!!

How I love you for this change in direction!

I went into this with low expectations after his first EP but this took a DRASTIC turn, it's WAY more artistic sonically but in a way that tells a story and has his personality in there. And the production feels more made specially for him and the LIVE feel throughout is what made me really pay attention.

Now for the fun part. His vocals.

Something I've learnt here, Jimin is a smart singer than most (including me) give him credit for. He knows when he's overdoing the auto tune for an effect and he knows when to be whiny or exaggerated cos then he has great moments when he's suuuuper relaxed and closed with his phrasing with extra breaths/whines. It's so fascinating and makes listening even more enjoyable. Granted his tone can still be polarising for sure but I think when he's without auto tune and singing directly and clearly he brings something VERY exciting to k-pop.

Clearly the vocal lessons are working because his delivery has definitely improved a lot. I know how old jimin would've sang slow dance, it wouldn't have been so free of nasal accents. His runs are nice too!

Hope the lessons improve!!

Enjoy!

Oooh I wouldn't have noticed this at all!

BTW (to continue), it’s interesting that we can tell from what part of the US Jimin’s teacher either came from or learned. His “a” sound in words like dance or romance seems especially flat/more nasal; so we know he wasn’t taught (or is having a hard time) to sound more generic - it’s not a pronunciation from the south or west coast. I chuckle whenever I hear it. Bottom line though - with only a few places that many would have difficulty with (like completing the word more), Jimin sings amazingly well and very clearly in American English.

I appreciate your review. Cool insights. But honestly, I’m struck by how popular or cool it has become for many to diss Jimin. At first I thought it was constructive criticism but then I looked at what some have said about other singers, and wow - many love absolutely boring, mediocre singers who have little impact, at least outside of Korea. And no artistry to speak of — automatons. So my fundamental question is whether some think they are just too cool to like Jimin (their peers will give them a hard time) and are following the herd now or genuinely feel the way they do? It’s hard to tell. But, if I listen solely to you, I feel like you are coming from the right place. Maybe concentrating on you is what I’ll need to do as Jimin is by no means the only singer where the divide is huge and the comments from others sound so condescending without any clear expertise. Thank you for your insights. Please post as much as you can.

That Sofia song is tewww good 😭

Jimin as a soloist gave me a lost impression.. like he had trouble to find his style and himself as an artist.. I don’t know how to put it… but it felt like our feisty and gentle jimin had no confidence in himself as an artist.. then the damn encore happened and everyone discredited him as a singer..ahh drove me crazyy. i am not the biggest fan of his 2 songs, but he seemed more comfortable and i am proud of him!

Ra Ku

He also just released an acoustic version of “Who” and it just melted in my ears when I listened to it.

ArmyZen

I totally get this! He also accentuates his timbre when he does that nasally and whiny placement but when he doesn't I thoroughly enjoy everything he's doing

Koko3op

So I've always felt Jimin was a good singer. I also really like the stylistic choices he and his team made with this album. However (and this is just a me thing) I cannot get into the timbre of his voice. There is just something that doesnt do it for me. The song production on this album was beautiful and I again really emjoyed the whole vibe of the album and how it was different but still felt like Jimin, but idk there is just something that makes it hard for me to want to listen more than once.

Seth

I love this album so much ✨🫠 slow dance and Who on repeat 💜

armii_11

Yesss you get it!! When you take it in fully you really go ahhhh

Koko3op

i personally absolutely LOVED like crazy and really liked alone from face but as a whole i felt like it was still a pretty weak project (set me free and face off brought it down a lot for me), completely agree with you that this was soooo much more solid!! also cannot wait to see what he will sound like after his vocal training since he has one of my fav tones maybe ever lol. loved the reaction/insight as always!!

gretchen

Thank you for the reaction! I was happy to see that you reacted to the whole album. Iirc, I don't think you reacted to the Face b-sides, though I'm sure you listened to them in your own time. I preferred them over LC and SMF pt.2. Muse has some strong songs, Be Mine and Who are so incredibly catchy, I've been listening to them over and over again. And don't get me started on Jimin in the Who MV. Edit: Also really like the delicate, magical vibes of Rebirth. However, I actually felt that the message on Face was maybe even a little more authentic than on Muse. Or at least that was my impression from the behind-the-scenes footage where he explains how he tried to convey his (dark/sad/confused) emotions during the pandemic. Don't get me wrong, Face was flawed, but I appreciated that he got involved in the writing and tried to express his thoughts. He had little experience with it and it certainly doesn't come as easily to him as to the rap line, but I I learned more about him. Like another comment said, it felt like an important stepping stone. I'd love to see you react to the minimoni videos, and maybe also Jimin and JK's travel show that'll be out in August!

Bee

I’m so glad you’re reacting to this, bc I hadn’t listened to it yet bc I was waiting for another “bungeoppang recipe” if you’re catching my drift. (Umm yah Sofia Carson.. and like almost everyone doing the production on this album). So, I was just not inclined to give my money to them, but I was like ok, if KingTaeyeon reacts, I will watch. So, I just reading all the lyrics and watched some clips on twt of the who choreo and the mv, and from smerldo marching band. AND GIRL- that was a mistake. Cause when I tell you I was hating on all of those lyrics. It’s literally all up on the discord spoilers being like, wot is this cheesy, comphet…. I’m so confused. What are we going for here? What purpose is this serving and why? When smeraldo garden marching band was released, I was so mad it was actually an army song, cause I was like WHY HAVE TWO ARMY SONGS IN AN EP JIMIN? But obviously, now that I’ve listened to all of it, I can tell I missed all the good parts. I mean maybe it’s biased bc I was listening through you, but I agree it sounds more artistic than Face. The use of autotune also sounds artistic, maybe even pointed at times. It feels like a really nice amalgamation and elevation of Jimin’s solo work thus far, including solo songs via bts. It really feels like an EP; the songs work together even though they’re all slightly different sonically. I don’t know if it’s all my personal taste, but it makes me really happy that I actually listened to it, and excited to hear what he does next.

I am glad you appreciate this album more. I know you weren't a fan of FACE but that first album was extremely important for him as a person and artist since he was deeply involved in writing and production. He expressed the struggles he felt during the pandemic but at the end he let go of those negative emotions and is able to create an album like MUSE and you can see how far he has developed as an artist. Its crazy to think he started working on MUSE right after FACE. I am so excited about his development as a soloist and look forward to him finally using his vocal potential.

Jaya Flikweert

I can't wait to watch it!!

Koko3op

You can definitely learn technical foundational things that'll make other parts of singing much easier.

Koko3op

Oooooo that does sound good!

Koko3op

Hey I'm so glad you listened to his album ! It's so different from Face so I was curious to know what you would think about it. (And gosh such a night, so many reactions I was hoping to have from you, after Hanbin and Katseye x)) So, I agree with you about the fact that we will really see the improvment in his singing after his military. He said himself that he was not there yet when he recorded it (MUSE) on the video where he talks about it with RM. I saw other people that talked about it in comments already, but yes he talked more about his vocals and the production of the album on it it was really interesting and it's going in the direction of what you were saying. Overall I love the whole album, especially Rebirth and Who. And Closer Than This has a special place in my heart because of the lyrics and MV x) "Smeraldo Garden Marching Band" is not really my style either, but it still fun and pleasing to listen to, so I'm not going to skip it if I play the album but I'm not adding it to my playlist either x)

Lexy S

Loved this!! literally so many of my thoughts too, but what I found so interesting is that he said both solo albums were written around the same time but he recorded this while in the middle of taking lessons, can't wait to see what he sounds like when he comes back.fyi i'm getting all of this info from where he played his album for RM (on their youtube channel). Died when RM heard the intro and was like I already like this more than the whole FACE album, cause I was like SAME!!!

HBATDS

You hear all the time in Kpop that certain people need vocal lessons and tbh I never really see anything after that indicates lessons. Maybe I don't follow a lot but I haven't seen it the closest is that someone whos okay at singing gets better I see that a lot but not really people with bad techniques actually changing them.

Faxe11

He started working on this album immediately after Face album.

Myah Gibson

AHHHH I WAS WAITING FOR THISSS!! I lovveee how he sounds in this album. The vocal training is clearly showing so I hope he keeps doing it. He mentions his vocal lessons in an album exchange with RM (Mini Moni Exchange on Youtube) which I think will be insightful for you. He talks about this album in detail

feen

I think you would enjoy him and RM's "MMM Mini & Moni Music" on the Bangtantv YT channel. The first one, RM talks about his new album and his mindset between it and his previous album. Jimin gives his opinion/advice. The second part is them discussing this album and Jimin's last one. RM also gives his opinion and liked this more than Face. Both parts were great and their friendship is beautiful!
