Red Velvet Cosmic Mini

Hmm.

FOR A 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY mini this is not it for me. I'm not mad at the title track and a couple of the other bsides and I get that they're past their prime but that doesn't mean they don't deserve top tier innovate music/choreo.

I like the choreo though but their work prior to this is definitely stronger and more interesting overall. The birthday mini would've suited this era WAY more! ALSO from the teasers which I knew I should've ignored cos what follows K-pop teasers never lives up to the hype and grossly over sells the mystique and uniqueness of what's to follow.

But anyway,

Enjoy!!! Hehe

Red Velvet Cosmic Mini

Comments

Yup!!

Koko3op

This mini felt strangely empty in its core sound - it felt like it was sonically going for what what SNSDs Mr. Mr. Mini was going for (I think similar producers) but with some of the magic taken out of it - it feels like there’s this weird emptiness as an undercurrent throughout all of it

Katherine Simmers

Once again, you're not understanding what I mean by "past prime", as in peak popularity and relevancy. You can still be popular and putting out quality music, at no point did I suggest past prime means the quality of music lessens so I dunno where you got that from.

Koko3op

I don’t agree because there are groups in 2nd gen that are creating and putting out quality music. For example Shinee; as a group and as solo artists. You also have TVXQ as well. Maybe my perception of the artists is different since I’ve been a kpop stan since 2008

Azure Hickman

It's a fact. Most 3rd gen groups are past their prime now including TWICE, EXO etc. It's not an insult, it's how the music industry works. 4th gen groups are entering their primes now because of their growth and success rate and rising popularity whereas older groups are comfortably successful now. There is no "demeaning" of talents.

Koko3op

I respect your reaction and I agree the last few come backs have been underwhelming; however I feel it’s disrespectful and rude to say the group is past their prime. It feels like you’re demeaning their talents as vocalists and artists.

Azure Hickman

You are in my mind!! When you mentioned Mood Lamp when you heard Last Drop, when I finished listening to the song I said I wish Red Velvet did a version of Mood Lamp! Cause they fit that vibe. This album gave me Red Velvets version of Summer. And they followed that cosmic music style. The album for sure tickled my mind. Just driving, drop top down and just vibe to the music with no where to go

Jay Nice

Yeahh I hear this. Cosmic is still a strong song for sure but it just feels toooo familiar and similar to chill kill

Koko3op

this album is so bittersweet for me, like i love the songs mainly because i love the girls' vocals but this type of release doesn't feel that strong for a 10 year anniversary release... it also sucks that the members' input were overlooked, which kinda tarnishes the whole concept because i do enjoy it, even though it's all over the place. i'm just happy the girls are back at the end of the day considering the lack of promo of rv overall edit: i just wanted to add that even though there's not a super catchy hook to each of the songs, listening with headphones makes the harmonies addicting to listen to, which is what brings me to loving the songs. that's something i always appreciate with RV

Jonathan

i love cosmic but the bsides were so underwhelming for me

emma

Why have you not reacted to Badvillain yet? You will love them!

poncethemexican Gray

You hear it! Yess they really are fucked up for that

Koko3op

I literally said Sunflower is Boom Clap's sister in the worst possible way! SM needs to get over their inability to care about a group past the 7 year mark...it's tiring!

Haley David

LOL yeahh I wanted to go to the starssss

Koko3op

Please react to BadVillain they’re a new girl group and their stage presence is some of the best i’ve seen from the new generation they haven’t released a whole lot of songs but the ones they have released have been on repeat for me since they debuted on June 3rd in case you wanted to do a discovering BadVillain video here’s a nice order to go in, Hurricane performance , +82 performance, Batitude(Ya-ho), then their title track BADVILLAIN. I really hope you get the chance to check out these talents. And fun fact one of the members was on the first season of street woman fighter her name is Emma she’s a great dancer.

Lamiah Timsah

Agree, cosmic (the song) didn’t have any cosmic qualities imo, I was expecting smth more majestic with creepy undertones but we got pretty standard horse girl music 😭😭 The b-sides are pretty good but idk if it’s just me but the production feels like it’s lacking a LOT. It doesn’t feel as high quality as their previous stuff.

Aqsa Hussain

Thanks! You're my Kpop 101 course! lol. I will say, I don't really go back on anything I said, but I do like the disco/post-disco groove in the chorus, and not just cause everyone on youtube is saying it's ABBA. I think if they had saved the key change for the last chorus after the bridge, it maybe would've felt less abrupt. They may have not wanted to do that, bc a key change in the last chorus hasn't been popular in pop music since the 90's, aside from in Love On Top. Nowadays, ya know, it kinda has reputation for being cheesy, but if within the context of this song it would've worked, that's a stupid line of reasoning.

Irene

Loooooovee this comment, you did that! Yes everything you said I completely agree!

Koko3op

Look is one of my favorite rv songs!! Shout out to Look!

Irene

I liked Cosmic (the song), but it's not my favorite title track from RV. Well, I liked how the chorus had those minor chords that added an underlying darkness or spookyness to such a bright song, especially with some already spooky and dreamy harmonies at the begining, and with the concept of the mv, but I did not like how the song transitioned into it's chorus. It felt too harsh, especially in the second chorus, and the abrupt change in pace pulled away me from the song. I also wish the "come with me" had a lower harmony, or went back down again, but I always want things to get sadder, bc my biases attach that to complexity, pftjsjvh. Which I know psychologically shouldn't have to be true, but what can I say. I also liked the bridge. But I also agree with everything Andrew said, and the criticisms others have over the production/songwriting team. Sunflower was probably my least favorite from the EP, for the same reasons you didn't like it. I swear, Boom Clap was also my exact first thought when I listened to it for the first time! It sounded like it had been sitting in the vault since 2015, and they decided to finally use it for album filler, IN AN EP!! I also felt like a lot of the songs were lyrically TOO young and rudimentary for them, especially Last Drop. I know it's Kpop, and very, very rarely has the music of groups matured with the age of it's idols and their audience, but a song like Last Drop had no emotional complexity, and past a certain point that starts to feel insulting to both the idols and the audience. When you pair this with some lazy chord movements throughout the album, and then compare this EP to Aespa's most recent album, it makes it seem like SM thinks that past a certain age idols, especially women, can't have interesting or innovative music anymore. Anyway, I digress. It'll be interesting to see if or what changes happen for them.

Irene

ALL of this! Its a real shame

Koko3op

EXACTLY THIS!!

Koko3op

It's a shame really how similar their songs have been sounding lately. I want them to stop giving RV those creepy or slow songs that sound like something you'd hear on a haunted ride or in music box with a heavy beat and kind of metallic sound that I don't enjoy (see Love Arcade, On a Ride, Knock Knock etc) I don't like that I'm kind of always bracing myself before the choruses of their songs, waiting to be confused and disappointed cause I used to LOVE their choruses. :( I really appreciate the vocals and the overall sound they were going for but if you just put any of those songs next to "Look" it becomes glaring how lazy and uninspired the production has become. Where is the panning audio, the second or third chorus in a half-time, the rich/ heavy instrumentals?? Why are there only two or three instruments per song lol I'm so confused.

Chloé Hoarau

i feel like moonshine and kenzie have really dragged red velvet away from what made them great. chill kill and cosmic have been NICE but i get what you mean when you immediately knew it was the same team behind it. It's got weird chord movements and melodies that are VERY hard to follow - which some have just merged with red velvet's identity. But thinking back, red velvet used to have the CATCHIEST melodies. Their old music had JUST the right level of predictability, these new tracks just feel really out of place and just thrown together. And ofc they sound good bc theyre red velvet but they really do deserve more ten years in the game.

Andrew Wendt

Makes sense!!

Koko3op

HARD CHOP!

Koko3op

Agreed!

Koko3op

I'm glad it's not just me!

Koko3op

ya moonshine and kenzie have created such a specific rv sound that they’ve been pigeonholed into and im bored of it

Manuel Vega

I agree. The Chill Kill album had more bangers than this one. This EP felt a bit soft like they were given throwaway tracks just in time for their anniversary. Hate that they're getting less than what they could be doing with their sound.

humblegrind

Expecting anything innovative and not just mailed in (by the company, not the group and SM at that) 10 years in is kind of foolish. Even SNSD/SJ/Exo were given kind of whatever songs that far in. I went into this already expecting at best an OK song that wasn't going to be a disaster. Obviously some fans will point to Twice or BTS but SM is not JYP or Big Hit. Those 2 companies still NEEDED those groups. SM invented the model of squeezing out everything they could from their groups in their prime and then just letting them linger (so they didn't get the negative blowback of ending a group officially) while then shifting all their resources to whatever new group they have. It's too bad....RV is such a unique group

Edward Lee

I feel like you might know this already by the time you read this but the MV is inspired by Midsommer which a movie about the main character entering a Swedish cult while on a vacation/trip with her bf and his friends (one of the friends is Swedish and they were visiting his hometown which is the cult) but all the flowers/ flower crowns (they are seen moving which is also in the movie) , all white clothing, and the dancing in a circle is from the movie.

Trinity Martin

yeah this mini album kind of hurt to listen to and I did actually enjoy Cosmic as a title track. Red Velvet is the group that got me into K-Pop and they've been my ults for over 6 years now and so hearing the quality in their music slowly dwindle has been painful. Especially these past few years, I haven't been anticipating any of their comebacks and honestly it's just been a surprise to me that SM has actually still been producing them music. I got the feeling that the members (except maybe Seulgi and Wendy) weren't that bothered with the idol life anymore which is fair. Part of me would rather they stop now and retain the legacy of the perfect Red Velvet discography then have to witness SM give them more uninspired bsides. I'm not really sure what's going to happen next with Red Velvet but I think the only way they could properly redeem themselves to me is if SM gives us an actual velvet comeback like Automatic or Bad Boy or a title track like Body Talk (and with MUCH better promotions).

Eleanor Carys

The chorus was a major letdown for Cosmic I don't like those chords, If the song stayed close to the verses I might've liked it but I don't see myself listening to this. The other bsides were up my alley except Sunflower, which was a chop.

Ashley

I woulda liked it if they had done like a multi-verse concept while traveling through their different MVs or discography across universe. It sucks to say this too, but I feel like as the years go by the artist should share the responsibility and take on more stuff like producing for their own b-side just to show their artistry like what Tiffany and Sooyoung did for the Forever1 album some lyrics writing and some producing for their album. SM needs to loosen up a bit more.

MacLov'n

I hear you! Yeah some of these bsides just miss inspiration!

Koko3op

But I agree with what you said. Give this album to any other group and it would have been amazing but for Red Velvet's 10th anniversary? No mam. The songs were cool but it felt soulless. I wish SM would let them decide what they want to sing and what concept they want to do. It feels like they're trapped in a box labeled 'Red Velvet'. But it's the labels interpretation not theirs. Idk, that's just how I feel.

Daija Samariya

Agreed, I wasn't counting Chill kill in my description iusfgdiuyagsyiugd cos ya'll know how I feel about that mess!

Koko3op

Idk what the hell is going on in that SM building but they need to get it together asap!!! First Chill Kill and now this. And I'm not a Chill Kill hater at all but that album could've been much, much better. At the end of the day I'm gonna have to blame it on their A&R team because some of their b-sides have been lacking so much, it just feels completely uninspired and the production is off. The production for the vocals is often kinda weird and the adlibs are not giving at all on some of these tracks. And this for a group that can actually sing !! It's heartbreaking. Lol I didn't hate their previous album and I don't hate this mini but I miss "no skip" legendary group Red Velvet.

velvetfirefly

I liked Cosmic after the first listen, but loved it after the second. To me, it feels like Chill Kill's summer sister. 😂 I've only listened to the other songs once so I'll have to register and let them marinate to know how I really feel about them. On first blush though, it's cohesive, but not as impressive as their other summer EPs.

Elle

The way you described the title track is exactly how a Virgo is about people. Its gotta be good immediately or we'll put off being interested even if there's a possiblity of us liking it eventually.

Daija Samariya

I thought this album was a so much better than their last, I loved all the songs except for sunflower and night drive. Also the visuals for the mv >>>. They won me back over with this
