LUCAS Renegade Album Review

Soooo I was definitely pleasantly surprised in some ways BUT also not moved in other ways.

I will say though, Lucas' star quality is undeniable and most of it stems from his looks cos that face card is FUCKING INSANE and his dancing is pretty good. His RAP however left a LOT to be desired delivery and energy wise but also, the weird accents were throwing me OFF.

It is interested though seeing an SM artist say brazen lyrics like this, I really would like to know what he has on SM cos this feels like completely new territory which excites me in some ways?

I dunno, I'm indifferent I guess lol.

I am new to Lucas, really only getting into WayV just recently. I have yet to check out their content but from the mv's I did see, he seemed to be featured visually a lot (understandably) but not very many lines to rap or sing, so for me this song is quite enjoyable. When you mentioned Kendrick, that resonated production wise for me and maybe why I immediately liked the song(nostalgic), especially his singing moments(bridge is my fav part). I am happy he has made it this far and has a song for himself to keep him going. Rest of the album I can workout to. (not bad, I've heard much worse)

I’m not mad. I have been listened to the album a couple of times. Yeah there’s always something cringy in raps that cracks me up but overall I like the first 2 songs. Will I type them in to play individually… prob not but I will add them to my SM and Kpop 2024 playlists, as longs I like.

To be fair tho. Jay Park had a drive and passion for music that I don’t really see Lucas having here. The way he went on to establish not one but 3 lables and the way he constantly rebrands himself is a part of what makes him successful too. I don’t really see much “rebranding” regarding Lucas except him going from Silly and Goofy Hot Guy to Serious and Sad Hot Guy.

You know when D.O. Spoke about what listeners focus on when then listen to music? Well when I am listening to songs in English the lyrics come up in my ranking so I cannot stop laughing. I think I need to listen to this project again and focus on the melody only cause the rapping is not doing it for me either. It is very cheesy for me I cannot help it. However Lucas is a star and I agree with your assessment. His looks are very off the charts. I did like it better when he was singing I really enjoyed his lower register. I will not listen to it again as not my cup of tea but I like the effort and the good mood it put me on.

SM really serious about avoiding the Korean listeners for this with the full English. This whole project is unprecedented for SM. Guess it would never have happened when LSM was still around

very very unusual... what is the game plan here lol

For me, Renegade is interesting and innovating because of the context. An idol getting into a career shattering controversy and being just about blacklisted everywhere coming out with a song after a multi-year hiatus while being supported from SM Entertainment out of all the companies? You can't say that isn't interesting, regardless of whatever you feel about him. I think the song is meh, not offensively bad but not really amazing, but I do love that band section. Did not like his flow on it at all though. I think even outside of his controversy and songs, outside of who he personally is, what he represents is exciting. The fact a company is willing to back up an artist so much and to this extent feels like a shift in the industry, and maybe, just maybe, more idols will be saved from possibly bogus controversies by their companies rather than being dumped at the first sign of anything bad that eventually turns out to be false or not as serious as initially thought after time passes (thinking of Garam, or Soojin, etc.). I do see your vision about him. He has appeal, that face, and charisma; he could be an idol version of Jay Park or Tyga. SUPERM is dead, he's not in NCT or WAYV, his solo career is all he has and he is an outcast in the idol world. All that is left is to build a new path of redemption for himself, it's gonna be interesting to see (once again, very reminiscent of Jay Park's story of leaving 2PM after making anti-Korean Myspace comments but building up his career in uncharted territory for an idol, just less hip hop/rap based).

Wow he needs to ditch the rap and sing more, he's had the time to invest in his talent cause I don't EVER remember him sounding this good and his voice is refreshing and interesting to hear because his choices I haven't heard in kpop, Like his vibrato, vowel, and placement choices are so interesting to my ears.

Hammhoxx

Yess totally hear you

Just listened to this for the first time with you. The accent... My best guess is whoever it was on the demo has a strong english accent and Lucas was imitating the sounds as closely as possible rather than sing/rapping the words in their own right cause he's not fluent in english like that? Nor do I consider him someone with his own flow, so he's probably imitating whoever is on the demo as best he can. No shade about him not being fluent in english obviously. (Although I'm sceptical of anyone debuting as a rapper or a rap-heavy soloist when they're not contributing with lyricisism in some way like you've got with artists like Joohoney, Mark, Taeyong etc. That is a pretty high bar for someone at Lucas' skill level, though). Anyway him slipping in an out of the accent was very distracting, especially when you've followed wayv for years and you know its not what he sounds like. It's like when american actors do awful english accents in movies and it takes you oouuutt. This combined with what you said about him switching the narrative after being like "I'm devestated" in the documentary definitely made the song feel inauthentic + tryhard. For me, he can't quite pull it off. He's surely got some sort of situation going on a personal level with someone higher up at SM but I'm curious about his longevity as an idol, which will depend on whether he can actually turn a profit on the money they're investing in him. I saw on twt his first day sales reported by Hanteo was 5k which seems low, but I guess it's early days yet.

Makes sense!

Koko3op

Oh you lost me when you mentioned Sehun loooool but yeah maybe Xiaojun or someone

Koko3op

i TOO would like to know what he has on SM. because i could see SM wanting to push a popular all rounder ( and they have good idols that can do that already ) lucas has looks and a solid fanbase but like they could have easily given this sort of debut to sehun (love him but lbr) or someone else in wayv. this push for lucas has never made sense to me.

briana skywalker ♡

The real issue is he had to do it in English. They need to market him outside of Asia because Asia hasn't been forgiving to him at all. SM only considered English as an option!

Haley David

My God why have I NEVER thought of that?!?! You are SO RIGHT! OMG

Koko3op

VERY unusual, I do like uncharted territory tbh

Koko3op

I think it's interesting that it was all in English. Usually all English songs s are specifically trying to appeal to a western audience. I wonder if that's who they're trying to target. If they are, then my question is why? I'm not shocked at how good his dancing is. He was a good dancer in Wayv, he was just always dancing next to Ten lol (and sometimes messing up the choreo). Lucas's entire rollout for his re-entry into the kpop industry makes me wish SM would debut a soloist. Like a trainee that debuts only as a soloist from the beginning. Not someone who is in a group first and then goes solo. Overall, it's interesting seeing what they're doing here with Lucas. I don't think we've seen this before

Ellie

I will also like to know what he has on SM😂 3 reasons: 1. Its very unusual for SM to come out with a whole documentary for an artist with scandals 2. To go on tour as soon as a solo artist debut. 3. Debuting as a rap artist with very vey deep lyrics Maybe SM is doing a different thing or something. Its just unusual to me. However great that he's back

pup_kay43

Like AS to be expected lol

Koko3op

RIGHT?!??!

Koko3op

i also have many questions about the random english accent lmao
