Taeyong TAP Mini Album Review

WELL this was a pleasant surprise.

It started off badly but then become such an ENJOYABLE listening experience. His musicality and delivery is so great that his title tracks just don't do him justice for me.

I hope post military he will have try to take his title tracks a lil more seriously because these bsides were very good!

lol sorry! my paragraph button was acting up as an Enter-Post button for some reason, so i used the space bar because i knew you hated single long-ass texts! πŸ˜… πŸ’š

Hunny we still ned to work your paragraphs! Why are they in the middle of the page :(((((. But yes there's something special about Taeyong

I agree, he is a great singer, he really does utilise his voice in multiple ways but always perfect for every line and word... The fact that he has been writting for years and then producing aswell his own songs, i feel so proud of him! Also, he was my bias from scratch because of that magic something that oozes from him while performing, and let me confess, i fell in love with how he moved his fingers-hands, it sounds a bit fetish-like but really..., this had never happened to me before him, even when i had been a casual consumer of kpop since Big bang, SuJu, Rain era, i knew/liked EXO and SHINee and i had never felt that type of attraction? connection? Why am i saying all of this? because i'm still dumbfounded at how is it possible that even after feeling that bias-connection instantly, he is also writting and producing the type of music that i love the most?!? I really feel blessed. (like, it could happen that one stans someone and then he/she makes music you don't feel that connected to but one would still support him/her anyway...) I'm not a delulu young kpoper, this is not about me needing to find an idol to see myself reflected on, felt understood etc. I was then already an adult just falling for his artistry even when back then i still didn't know he would be making THIS music 😭. I love that when i listen to his music i can happily say: i f_cking love music!!!!!! Sorry about my stan-rant, but i had to let this one out... Thanks Micah for reacting to his music πŸ’šπŸŒΉπŸ™

Once again, I'm late, but thank you so much for checking out Taeyong's TAP album. It's so interesting to watch various reactors, because I've seen every song on this album be someone's favorite. The general consensus is that it is a work of art, and I agree. "TAP" is also my least favorite song on the album, but it is fun and is such an earworm. I've also seen a lot of idols dance to it. But like you said, most people will never know what an incredible musician Taeyong is because they don't hear the b-sides. Taeyong has mentioned that he wants to do something different for his title track next time, and I can't wait. SM staff had a lot of say in what particular songs went into this album. Taeyong is a prolific songwriter (said he recorded 40 songs in one month just before he went to the navy). He submitted several songs for consideration, and these are the ones SM chose. I think I do like the individual songs in TAP better than Shalala, but I like the concept and organization of Shalala album better. I feel like it had more of a story (maybe because I watched the Definition of Taeyong video where he explains it a bit). One of the things I love about Taeyong's music is that he experiments with a variety of genres (hip hop, ballad, rock, rap, R&B, etc.) and yet, his songs always sound like him. He is so multi-faceted as both a person and artist. It's interesting that "Moon Tour" didn't do much for you because it's usually a common favorite. I think the rock vibes of "Run Away" suit Taeyong's voice well, and I like the surprising little change-ups. "Ape" is incredible. Many agree with you that it should've been the title track. There is sort of a MV to it, but it's not the whole song. It's called "Searching for TY." It was actually a teaser is pretty cool and shows some nice acting from Taeyong. "Ups & Downs" is my jam. I get so blissed out listening to that song sometimes. "404 Loading" is part of a trilogy. Idk if you remember the song "404 File Not Found" from the Shalala album, but that is part 1. This one is part 2. Part 3 will be called "404 Play" and will most likely be on Taeyong's next album. Also, fun fact, but the songs are exactly 4 minutes and 4 seconds long (4:04). Taeyong is a true creative. Thank you for your honest thoughts and respect for Taeyong's artistry. Also, sorry for another long comment.

Nicely said.

haha ooooo yikes!!

Watching this it’s so funny that you said ape should’ve been the title track because apparently it was supposed to be but Sm staff voted against it, I think it’s because it’s an obvious diss track to the executives of Sm because Even at his concert he said something along the lines that this song is dedicated to people who are money hungry or something like that

Yuuuuppp

Koko3op

What you said about the quirks is so real. Look at Missy, her whole career has been camp af but she's saying sumn the whole time. He needs someone to push him and really dig deep into his brain to pull out the goods. I know they're there. He's a Missy, a Busta, a Q-Tip even but they market him like a child. Let his rap grow w him, its time.

LMAAOOOOO

Thank you for the reaction! I dont always agree with your opinions but I appreciate hearing different POVs. My fave songs in the album are Ape and Ups and Downs and Moon Tour altho I truly love all of them, including TAP but I understand what you mean. Fortunately as time goes on Taeyong is getting recognition from non fans and industry professionals as a true Artist and people dare to check out his b-sides, his highlight video got a lot of people interested on the b-sides and a lot of GP vibe to TAP so get getting a little bit of both. I can't wait to see what his next album is gonna be like because he just keeps improving more and more and I know hes gonna write and work on so many songs in these 2 years away :'D

The last trio, Ups & Down, Ape, and 404 Loading, is also my favourite in his 2nd mini. '404 Loading' is the 2nd part of the '404 File Not Found' in the Shalala mini. I wonder if you would react to Taeyong's solo concert because the consecutive performance of '404 File not Found' to '404 Loading' was a very satisfying experience visually and sonically.

Seven

YESSS to everything you said! The way he sings is so emotive, he manages to pull me in and feel emotional like this guy had me crying when I watched the livestream of his solo concert and it’s not like he was even singing ballads! Lol. We all know he’s a great rapper and performer but when he sings? Oh it just hits different!

KD

That and they do such a bad job promoting him and showcasing his artistry 😭

KD

I like fun too but clearly he’s a musically gifted artist and for shalala it was cute but to do the same for the next title track will just do a disservice to his bsides that won’t be exposed to the people expecting his songs to just be β€œfun”. Which was my main point, perhaps you missed that. I didn’t ask for a β€œtour de force” either.

Koko3op

What I really appreciate about TY's songs is that despite them not being slow ballads, the lyrics and the way he sings is so emotive that I can't help but feel moved (I don't think I've ever cried listening to a k-ballad tbh ahaha). I think the fact that the production isn't necessarily slow is what makes the sadness of the lyrics and the desperation in his voice so surprising and impactful. His song structures and the production to me feel so unpredictable which I really appreciate and honestly feels like a breath of fresh air. But they also feel like HIM. So many times I've heard great songs from Idols with great lyrics, but you just know they haven't written them, or they're not a true reflection of them. With TY I truly feel like he's put a part of himself, his experiences and his heart into these songs. His vulnerability really shows, and that's what I love about these songs the most.

Zara

Some people like fun, TAP is fun. Not everything has to be a tour de force of musical production and writing, sometimes things are fun for the sake of being fun!

Bay

No they are,you js lowkey gagged me. 😭😭

Kenyan drake

Not the answer you were expecting?? Lool are my feelings not valid?

Koko3op

Yesss I see what you mean regarding the pop punk for sure.

Koko3op

Ahhhh man! sm staff are tasteless 😭

Koko3op

The 2nd half of the tracklist have usually been my favs for SM releases lately w/ the exception of Ten's album. Although I loved how fun and cute Tap is, I understand what you mean that tts like Shalala/Tap could stop people from listening to the rest of the album. And make them discount how talented TY is /misunderstand him as a solo artist/producer. Ofc I don't think this will be an issue with czennies but causal stans/those who only see the TTs.

Christine Nguyen

Just realized I think TY teased the lyrics of Ups & Downs in an IG story awhile back. I remember a story he posted had sad words in it and everybody was worried about him.

Christine Nguyen

I think it's how you started your hottake that triggered people not so much that you did not like Tap. It's not surprising that TY's tts are not everyone's cup of tea

Christine Nguyen

I agree with you and think APE should’ve been the title track! In an interview, TY actually said he submitted 6 potential songs for his title track but TAP won unanimous votes among SM staff, while the one he initially chose as title track was voted last. He said he wanted to follow the staff’s opinion so he switched up the title track towards the end of the comeback prep, which was quite challenging for him.

KD

I feel vindicated. Agreed on Ape being the title track. TAP just was not it for me. I posted in hottakes and was accused of liking uninspired R&B 😭😭😭 Like I was shooting for Sticker and Simon Says when the world was against me. I just want better for him! πŸ˜‚ Ape, Ups & Downs, and 404 Loading saved this mini for me. Run Away was okay. I'm kinda over this pop-punk vibe in KPop because it's never fleshed out and explored beyond this specific sound. I much prefer the softer parts of his voice. The throaty, harsher elements off it, I prefer being featured less but it works for me on tracks like Ape because the production is so good. He has a lot of potential based off of the last half of the mini.

Monte

Oh wow…

Kenyan drake

Also people constantly asking for Ten on other reactions has been kinda annoying if I’m honest and put me off even more.

Koko3op

Nope! I don’t enjoy Tens voice much

Koko3op

Are you gonna do TENs as well? 🀭
