I’ve reached the point where I just don’t care about the “new kids” anymore. They’re not putting out anything interesting. They don’t sound good. I’m happy listening to my EXOs and SHINees. As for new music I look forward to, none of that’s from Korea lol, save for some indie and rnb stuff.

I'm curious as to who the future generation of kpop trainees will look up to. With so many groups from 4th and 5th gen having no standout vocalist/performer, I can see a lot of trainees looking to groups from smaller companies like Ateez. Or perhaps Exo and BTS will continue to be the inspiration for most of them. Hopefully groups like TWS won't be what they aspire to be like. But it'd be quite interesting to see smaller groups take the lead in the industry if top companies continue to pump out groups like this.

I think the purpose and meaning of a song is very important. This is just a song about the first day of school, not every song needs to showcase the best vocals. Funny enough, this song is charting well in korea, with peaks listens being the hours when middle and high school students are studying. Its a song that brings joy to people, how can you hate that :(

I also think that they are the second 5th gen boy group that hybe has debut (yes I understand that they are under pledis) but lets be real there sound is not distinct enough out of 5th gen. If I heard this song in passing would not stop and be like who are they. Compared to Zerobaseone, Riize, BoyNextDoor, and Xikers they all have their own distinct sound. Are they great dancers yes, but where is the flavor from the singers to maybe a rapper. I wish nothing but the best for them but not my cup of tea. Like I am going to compare them to BoyNextDoor since they are going to be known as a hybe boy group. What KOZ did was let them write their own songs developed a sound that works for them, they have a bridge that catches your attention, they have a rapper that has that YG/Bobby feel because he did train with Bobby from Icon, and they have their own dance style. What Pledis did was unfortunately try to make a smaller Seventeen but with weaker vocals. In a generation with developing vocals no thank They are great dancers but I am not always going to watch the dance practices to see them I am going to listen more.

HYBE isn't one company. It's a bunch of mid-sized kpop companies (except BigHit), using the same infrastructure. It's been 3 years since tHYBE was formed and there's really no reason kpop stans should still be so ignorant about how the company literally functions. If you have a problem with TWS then the only company responsible is Pledis.

I'm going to need you to tone down your SM stan-ness and anti-HYBE bias when reacting to HYBE groups, especially if you're going to be wrong about something as basic as company structure and since you have a paid platform. Pledis is an independent label under HYBE, Pledis picks the trainees, Pledis trains the trainees, not HYBE. All HYBE provides is cash and infrastructure, occasionally producers from BigHit work on other songs, but the companies under HYBE are fully in charge of their auditioning, training, and recruitment. If you have a bone to pick with TWS, hold Pledis responsible.

I agree. They're cute, they have their sound and I'm sure performances will be fresh and fun. But I definitely noticed that this was not a vocal group out of the gate. I love Hybe artists but when I think of them, they're definitely performance/choreo heavy and no super spectacular vocalists come to mind in the 4th/5th gen aside from Heeseung and maybe Jiwon (Fromis9) or Yunjin. We were spoiled with 3rd gen (DK, Seungkwan, Yuju, JK).

I hear what you're saying in terms of the overwhelming number of groups but I don't agree with the idea that Hybe groups don't have identity because they most definitely do. Even with the amount of groups they have, they are all vastly different with cool and refreshing concepts. New jeans is so different from Le sserafim, Enhypen is so different from TXT and BoyNextDoor. They have their own colours, flavours and aesthetics all the way down to story -telling. Does Hybe need to work on improving vocal ability? Most definitely. But do Hybe groups lack Identity? Absolutely not. They've done so well with groups like New Jeans, Le sserafim and TXT who is known for being quite different. I will say they've kinda missed it with the branding of TWS but I think for a company who has heavily influenced the recent change in direction for Kpop as soon as they debuted New Jeans and their more laid back style, its unfair to say the groups don't have Identity when they definitely do. However, in terms of actually singing, Hybe needs to get on their zoom.

And it’s such a huge change in standards for a Pledis group! I don’t know much nuest but I’ve HEARD their songs and they have style and the vocals to back it up. And seventeen’s pre-debut show had half an episode dedicated to the recording process of their song Shining Diamond where Bumzu talks about several members and their enthusiasm for improving their vocals, including Hoshi from the PERFORMANCE unit and Seungkwan who went as far as going to the hospital to find a way to sing in a way that sounded good without damaging his throat in the long run! During TWS’ pre-debut videos, the members mostly talked about “inspiring” people or dancing, or “ooh, idols can dance and sing at the same time”, there was not a single member who seemed genuinely interested and enthusiastic about SINGING specifically.

I’ve honestly been taking a break from kpop as a whole. listening to good rnb again, hearing the runs, the diversity in voices made me realize how low my expectations are when i hear a kpop song now. Don’t get me wrong i love zb1 they are super talented & probs the best 5th gen group with vocals but compare them with most 3rd/2nd gen groups… like the vocals cannot compare. i already knew from the get go tws would not sing, even the lyrics are corny like wut. go watch “y si fuera ella” by jonghyun & tell me anyone in 5th gen can come close to the performance value & vocals… you can’t. i love me a good dance practice every now & then even a cute special dance performance but what happened to singers actually being able to sing????

These are great points and I agree this isn't a new issue however I do think it's getting WORSE because the biggest groups from earlier gens HAD great singers whereas now the most popular groups atm, Newjeans, Enhypen, IVE, G Idle, Xikers, Riize, TXT etc have okay/good singers at BEST which is definitely a new issue. No one exceptionally talented. And any groups with members that have potential it's not utilised nor is it a priority to showcase their singing. Every generation certainly has it's fault and I agree, hindsight is always 20/20 because you forget about all the rubbish you endured in the past but the shortening of songs and loss of bridges/vocal adlibs is concerning and also a new issue due to the rise of social media and shortening attention spans.

It's so frustrating when groups like this get so much support and visibility right out of the gate, yet bands like Xdinary Heroes can't even play their instruments live on music shows and repeatedly get ignored on promotions. Their sub vocalists could out-sing and have better stage presence while standing still than 90% of the nugu groups like this but they don't dance so ppl barely give them a chance. I'm not naive, I know that talent can only take u so far, luck and money and trends usually have a much bigger role to play in entertainment. And I actually disagree that ignoring vocals in favor of visuals and dance is a new problem. It's always happened in every generation and in many many other genres as well. But the issue is that the groups with cultural staying power in each gen have the vocal and\or rap talent to support their longevity. Groups that are very successful in their day for their pretty faces and decent footwork have been and always will be a thing. But they don't last, we think vocals mattered more in previous generations bc we just don't remember the bajillion boring groups like this that were also around. And a difference now is that we know these companies have the time and resources to develop good vocals and find natural talent. It's not like the old days where they gotta churn out a new group every 6 months and hope one of them sticks. There's enough precedent and money in the game that instead of teasing a new group for the last like 3 years just to deliver a generic and bland concept with (seemingly, no shade to the boys bc hype could totally be stifling good talent) average kids that feels like it would have been fresh if they'd debuted 10 years ago, they could have taken that time to seriously train actual adults who have real skills they've carefully cultivated.

cannot agree more. i stan a lot of groups that are considered nugus are have been forever stuck in mid-tier who are AMAZING singers and it frustrates me knowing theyll never reach the heights this group will solely because theyre young and from a good company. i have no opinion on their sound either, but if their music is good, unless theyre composing it themselves that isnt nearly good enough to make up for the fact that their singing is so subpar. im sure theyre working hard and whatever in their own right but its just upsetting especially knowing fromis will definitely be thrown to the side for this. the standard of singing has gone so far below the belt and we all know that kpop stans cant take criticism and will force us to agree theyre amazing. whats crazier is that even if the GROUPS are better, the main dancers aren't really giving either. a lot of these new groups are trained to do tighter choreo so they LOOK better as a unit, but if you pluck them out individually theyre lacking severely compared to 2nd-3rd because their foundations are nonexistent. if the trend for kpop vocalists is to be lifeless and nasally, the trend for kpop dancers is to go as full out as you can at all costs, rhythm musicality and control be damned 😭

TWS feels more like a hybe group than a pledis group. Like, you're telling me pledis waited almost 10 years to debut another bg and this is the best they could come up with???? It's a waste of a group at this point, it's truly giving “and you're watching Disney channel” or “next up for the school talent show is..”. I know hybe values performance over literally everything else but at least have ONE member be able to carry the rest in the vocal department. I still don't get why hybe doesn't have a vocals department, they just tell trainees if they want to develop to pay for it out of their own pocket during the free time they do not have. I don't really like 5th gen groups but the big names I've heard truly sound the same or remixes of one another. Everyone is now doing easy listening / bright 2-minute-long music for their debut. It's all starting to blend for me. Feel like the only one different is RIIZE.

My faves have been coming back, so I've been enjoying my kpop so far this year. But your video description had me so intrigued, I had to check it out. 5th-gen is going to be a tough sell. We are mostly emotionally attached to 3rd/4th gen kpop, much like the Koreans were to 2nd gen. The time gap is too short and there are a lack of new ideas to make it distinctive. I wonder if this means legacy acts would start to play a bigger role (like in the West). The BTS reunion will likely be bigger than anything new

Omg, I was literally JUST telling my friend this, he was ranting and raving about this group and how much he likes them. I was like no... They all sound the same, just like most of 4th and 5th gen, High placement, very nasal, tension, and no support. The singing talent is severely underdeveloped on EVERY MEMBER!!! Like wtf are we supposed to just watch their dance practices? What would I get from their music? I’m gonna watch this video to confirm my thoughts!! I actually checked out this song/MV yesterday, and I can’t believe how passive my expression was throughout the whole thing. The millisecond I heard the autotune, I screamed in my head: “FUCK HYBE!!!” It hasn’t been a full 24 hours but I already forgot how the song sounds, because it was just that boring. I can seeee exactly what they’re going for which is basically TXT vibes and I’m not with it. Same company doesn’t mean they need to do similar concepts??? Like it’s just so boring and lazy. Genuinely HYBE can fuck off. They hit it big with BTS (I love them) and think they can do the laziest shit. Not to be pink blooded, SM just knows what they’re doing (when Lee Soo Man is in charge; idk what’s happening now). Before their debut and we got videos of them singing from Taerae Showv and the KStarNextDoor episodes, there was a lot of doomposting that they wouldn't be vocally strong, similarly to the complaints that they wouldn't be good at variety since none "variety stars" from BP debuted. During the early episodes of BP as well, there was a lot of complaints that the show as a whole lacked strong vocalists outside of a few trainees. Half the members of ZB1 were called dozens throughout the entirety of the show, until Taerae Show/In Bloom, most people didn't know Ricky, in particular, can sing as well as he does. After the finale and predebut, there was a lot of talk of ZB1 mostly just being a visual group that got popularity votes over the "more talented" trainees on BP, so the group would suffer vocally because of it. Obviously, that did not end up happening, but the discussion was there.

the fact that you even have to preface that this is your opinion is so upsetting. you shouldn't have to feel like you need to explain yourself. i definitely agree with you because when i listened to this i was excited, one because it's a new boy group from pledis, but second because they're a lot younger and i hope that there's a group out there that will change the game for 4th/5th gen because what we've been seeing recently is honestly been disappointing as a whole (obviously there are exceptions). this song was just full of everything i didn't want to see in an upcoming boy group that has the power to lead this generation of kpop since they have such a huge company backing them. it'd be harder to find something that's even slightly likeable in this song rather something i disliked (more like hated). i really don't understand this wave of everyone sounding so commercialized and interchangeable. i began listening to kpop because i loved the aspect that i could find different types of talent in one group. NOT EVERYONE NEEDS TO BE AN ALLROUNDER!!! i feel like i'm not even listening to music at this point like it's just depressing. i don't tend to talk about groups in this way because i understand everyone in this industry has it hard with how competitive it is but like you said there are just too many hidden gems out there that should be getting the spotlight instead of whatever this was. at the end of the day when you take away the performance aspect (which is not even that impressive and i can name multiple groups with both better singing and dancing), the song itself has no appeal whatsoever. i do not blame you for not checking them out in the future and honestly i'm contemplating on doing the same (the only thing that's stopping me right now is the fact that i want this group to prove me wrong but i know that's not going to happen).

I feel like KPOP needs to bring positions back, cause most of the time when groups are like "there are no positions" I automatically (and correctly) assume there's no good main vocal/s. DKZ was one of the groups I thought of when writing this. Even Jaechan can out-sing every member in this group on a good day. What really made me realize how poor their vocals are was really when I started to think of ZB1's Yujin and Gyuvin. Those two are definitely the weakest singers in ZB1, yet Yujin showed more skill goofing off in the first episode of Camp ZB1 when they were singing in the camper and when he was singing with Jiwoong in Taerae Show 2. Gyuvin singing Over Me and goofing off with Gunwook while singing Man in Love in the first Taerae Show was also more interesting than anything I heard from any member of this group in this video. When I realized I would've rather heard six Yujins or Gyuvins singing those two songs instead, that's when it truly hit me how bad the state of this group's vocals are. I low-key felt insulted when I first watched their debut mv. I only saw it in full watching this reaction. When I first watched it myself the day it dropped, I didn't even make it to the prechorus, smh.

Even ZB1's main rapper Gunwook, who definitely has things he can be improving on and has been slowly, can probably sing better than all of what TWS showcased here and that's not even his main thing, he's the rapper and arguably second main dancer. It's crazy that ZB1 has, as a group, the strongest vocals in 5th gen so far, when there was so much concern, initially, on whether they'd sing well outside of Taerae and Zhang Hao. It's so frustrating, too, knowing that stronger vocalists, who also can dance well, are in nugu groups, struggling, and likely will never see the success TWS are already starting to, just because they're not in a big company.

I was too curious to watch this when I saw you post this, so I did. When the one singer went "wait wait", I was like okay maybe the song will change and we'll at least get maybe some rapping or at least mess around with beat so that its fun to listen to, or throw in a nice vocal, but no. I was grooving a small amount to it but I was not liking it too much, then they came in with "na na na" and my heart sank. I feel bad for these guys cause damn that just comes off to me that the only care that went into making this debut was into the choreo and even then and no offense to the guys at all cause yes they were doing so good at the choreo, but none of the choreo even was super cool or like eye-catching to me at least. That b-side could have used so much more. It needed better layering, more interesting harmonies, more power, more oompf in the vocal delivery, different flows in the raps and vocals and making it all in english idk for me personally felt liike it was cheapening it. jeez when I first read your caption I was like damn maybe too harsh, but I completely understand your opinion now.

Not only does the song sound dated and unoriginal, it sounds like music made for pre-teen Disney shows. It sounds like radio-friendly, summertime generic nothingness. Paired with the fact HYBE never prioritizes vocal training and love autotune these songs are so disappointing, especially since they are supposed to be Seventeen's juniors. I don't see any displays of actual vocal skill. Runs, vibrato, etc. WHERE IS ANYTHING??? Even if you look at them in the context of other 5th gen boy groups (because, let's face it, actual singing has been declining since 4th gen), they haven't displayed half of the skills ZB1's Taerae had even during his intro performance at Boys Planet predebut. There's no unique brand identity, no unique tone, nothing to set them apart from anyone. A true disappointment.

i'm so frustrated with the direction that kpop is going these days. i love dancers as much as the next person, but i listen to music because i want to listen to people SING. what happened to groups that debuted with at least 2 (maybe even 3) strong SINGERS?! i shouldn't have to watch a performance video to feel something from a song, it should be strong on its own and then amplified by a performance. the lack of singers and the absolute lack of choruses that actually sound full is astounding to me. also, what happened to releasing songs that were over 3 minutes? why is it a thing now to make a song less than 3 minutes? i used to love checking out different groups because i would always find something different, but with the industry now being so obsessed with debuting dancers only is very sad and i feel that kpop is losing the originality that it once had. now that is not to say that there haven't been great releases recently, because that would be a lie, but they are so few and far in between these days.

I can not tell you how I excited I was for this debut and group. I'm a huge fan of Seventeen and fromis_9 and since they were both trained and produced by Pledis, my hopes were so high for this new group. Needless to say, I listened to the title track (didn't watch the MV at first) and in the 1st few seconds, I was actually happy bc the electronic sound reminded me of fromis' earlier stuff (DKDK, Love Bomb and FUN still have my heart), but once the chorus hit, my face literally dropped. They went full EDM, which is just so tired in K-Pop and yes, them not vocalizing really pissed me off aswell. Aside from the fact that, as of now, there is no real vocalist in TWS, they also all sound so uninspired and emotionless. I still remember, even in their very early days, something both Svt and fromis often got praised for was how they were able to portray emotions so beautifully through their voices, TWS' singing was like the polar opposite of that. I guess my expectations were also too high (bc using fromis and Svt as a bar is just way too enthusiastic), but I was sooo dissapointed even outside of my expectations. I will be checking out their cb, just to see if maybe they just didn't have the right songs here or they miraculously improve(?), but my hopes aren't high since everyone is praising their debut. (Istg if a certain lesser popular group under Pledis gets even more sidelined for this, I'll go ballistic)

I have to say you kind of put your finger on exactly what was making me feel uneasy about the song? It felt cute, it felt kind of fun, and it felt like I SHOULD like it, but something about it felt… lukewarm? And hearing you verbalise it like that just felt like a lightbulb moment. As someone who admires dancing because I can’t do it and singing because I love doing it, I tend to go for good vocals when I pick (read: get hit in the face by) my biases, then get bias wrecked by amazing dancing. Case in point, Seungkwan and Dino. The story was fun and their acting was cute but I actually listened without the video first and it just felt… bland. Again, I tend to choose my bias from a voice and then match the voice to a face. I got Seungkwan from 20 and Pretty U, Han from Hellavator, Junkyu from that round one ranking evaluation in Treasure Box (lol), and Nicholas from Dropkick (I was very surprised by that one). For this song, Plot Twist, I could tell when they changed singers but they just all sounded kind of the same. The song ended and I was like… that’s it? Anyways, TL:DR I’m sure lots of people will like it for good reasons but I’m glad I’m not the only one who felt this way and thank you for helping me understand why I did. 😅

Firstly why are they styled so similarly? they all have pretty distinct visuals from each other so why not show that more. The song was also forgettable but except for the few cases thats how I've been feeling about most 5th gen bgs so far but for pledis really?? the company that brought us afterschool, nuest, pristin(still mad about them), and Seventeen!?!

lmao i have no opinions on this group bc i'm watching this video with you after i type this up (maybe its a bad idea bc i could be "influenced" but i've personally lost interest in checking out every new group so its entertaining watching for the first time along with reactors instead) but, micah i do want to emphasize i really do appreciate your honesty and i like seeing opinions of people who are truly into MUSIC and experience genres and singers fr. i feel like people get so narrowed in on the fact its kpop so most groups can fit into an average "bubble" but the market is so oversaturated now that the standouts are far and few between

omg it's the fact that i was SCREAMING when i saw the title of this vid, because SAME! i really don't like this group lmao, i'm sure the boys themselves are lovely and i wish them well, but their music and general direction is not for me. i also think the promotion of this group was really weird, like the first thing i saw relating to them was an album teaser/mashup which made me so excited because a group debuting with an album is like unheard of now, it's always just short pre-releases and then the debut single but all of the 'music' just sounded like cheap, repetitive, UNFINISHED samples. as a carat, i also hate that they're banking so much on carat's support. i mean one of the first things that they released was just seventeen watching them perform, and they keep talking about how synchronised they are, knowing damn well that seventeen are literally the kings of that shit. also, if you look at the comments on that video it's like 70% carats talking about how they can't believe seventeen are seniors now, remember when they were just debuting, etc. all of that combined with the bright concept honestly just feels like a play on carats' nostalgia and it's so frustrating that seventeen's junior group doesn't even have a single good vocal, like wtf. anyway, just very disappointed and frustrated lmao.

okay honestly they just reminded me of a txt evolution lol like, 6 boys who are mid singers but have cool choreo and great performance. i love txt's music but their best singer...would maybe be a lead vocal in an SM group. it baffles me that hybe has debuted all of these groups in the last few years and hasn't managed to find a single singer that fkn SINGS except jungkook!!!!! i consider yunjin, dk, and seungkwan outside of hybe's talent pool, they were brought in, not trained at by hybe to be the singers they are. at this point, i don't think hybe has any value or interest in training real vocalists.

This is a great point. Jungkook is LITERALLY the ONLY SINGER singer they’ve found and V has definitely developed into being one of the stronger most unique singers in kpop now but I’m sure that’s of his own choice.
