EXO XOXO Album Review

So this was SUPPOSED to be a Youtube reaction but it just went so terribly I decided it'd be better here LOL.

I felt like I could be as honest about my disappointment cos can't nobody tell me NOTHIN' about EXO. This is like FAMILY, so the disappointment hits even harder and I'm gonna be honest about it lol.

The beauty is, LITERALLY EVERYTHING after this is like magnificent LOOL so I'll probably post that on youtube.

This however? No ma'am!

EXO XOXO Album Review

Comments

Been through is one of my favourites

Koko3op

I've listened to half of them off camera!

Koko3op

I notice you like R&B, I was wondering what you think of EXO's R&B songs like Bad Dream, She's Dreaming, One and Only, They never know, Been Through and if you've reacted to them yet?

Erick Tiusaba

Like some comments are alluding to SM didn't play to EXO's strengths until later, Growl was the hit that put them on the map. Playing it safe with this album makes sense because the people were not pleased with Wolf at all and weren't vibing with the EXO-M unit. Growl put their career back on track basically. Also, SM were obsessed with dubstep songs and random dubstep breaks, so that explains Black Pearl (the adlibs are what saved it for me). At this time, SM didn't often give too many experiential tracks to all of their groups outside of SMP-style songs but those mostly went to TVXQ/Super Junior, and they tried to carry it on with EXO (MAMA). The experimental tracks mostly went to F(x) and SHINee because they were basically the Red Velvet/NCT of their gen but with a focus on ushering in new ideas in pop/electronic/dance music instead of hip-hop (but SHINee still makes sure to keep some R&B elements). SNSD's I Got a Boy was pretty much the beginning of the experimental approach spreading to other groups. Side Note: The clip of KAI dancing in "Baby Don't Cry" is from one of the million teasers SM released leading up to EXO's debut. Snippets from some of their later albums are playing in some of them. They are a fun, easy watch because most of them are dance performances or showing their "powers" jkakfah

Haha I was going THROUGH IT

Koko3op

Your faces when you scored the songs is hilarious😂 I first heard some of the songs when they performed them live, so I had a better introduction to them when I finally heard the album. Heartbrake is one of my favorite Exo songs💜

Sigalit Dasa

I haven't heard these songs in so long. But this reminded me of the Drama Episodes they released with these. Went to watch the episodes again and I find them so funny now. I do wonder where the story would be now if they kept going with it.

Jaz

YESS! This really wasn't specific to them much but they definitely found their stride after!

Koko3op

yeah when this album released I was a diehard Shawol and...this did not change things for me LMAO. it has a lot of production and song choices that were common for that era (tbh, some of the songs sound like DBSK rejects) and were trying to appeal to that teeny bopper demo by being so sugary sweet + chanty and that's an entire genre of pop I dislike. But it sold like GANGBUSTERS with its target audience. Tbh, I always got the vibe that this was an album that SM could've given to any group as it doesn't really highlight the group's strengths. I don't think the people at SM really "got" EXO as a group until Overdose, which is much more R&B influenced. That was when I hopped on to the EXO train, but it wasn't until Call Me Baby and the Exodus album that I was fully buying what EXO was selling. Which honestly? Not surprising. Growl has so much "No Diggity"/New Jack Swing influence so of course bringing in THE maker of New Jack Swing to produce would lead to another banger lol

My thought on this album is it's theme wise cohesive. The love theme with fairy tale like storytelling applied throughout all the songs lyrics, that rarely see in kpop. Beauty and the Beast story in Wolf is continued in Growl (lyric wise), then we have Peter Pan, Mermaid Princess in Baby Don't Cry, Butterfly Fairy in Don't Go, A Voyage to find the love one in Black Pearl... I can see the idea even though the album's soundscape might not be cohesive like you said. I think SM normally more experimental with their title track which is not what big company normally do. And they balance that with some more generic, easy listening b-sides. Actually most of the b-sides from this album are quite popular among Korean fan. I guess it has more to do with the lyric. Since we're foreigners, we focus more on the music, but Korean fans may feel connected with the songs in term of lyric.

Alice

Well i can totally see what you mean and where you're coming from... i liked 4 songs in this album and i still can listen to it without skipping a song yet it's not my favorite at all. Not having Chen, Xiumin or Lay also make their overall sound so different in all these songs and at the same time it reminds me that Baekhyun used to be the one hitting all the high notes that normally belong to Chen in ot9 version and Chen even though he doesn't have the same vocal agility as D.O or Baekhyun was the one who mostly took care of all the riffs and runs for the Chinese version so talented🙄😖👌🏼. This was a very save album and that's okay for their rookie days, though i have to say, sometimes is refreshing being able to go back to this time and listen to this simple songs full of easy melodies and vocals. What i like about EXO is that they could be giving the most generic, basic song of all time and they will still exceed in the vocal department. At the end i believe the reason why many EXO-L love this album is for the nostalgia of it all, 10 years is a long time❤️ PD: You should totally show Sylvia Moonlight, Baby don't cry and My answer. And for Shinee why haven't you show her Romantic or Replay? What about sm Hot times? She's missing out on such good classics. Thank you for your honest feedback and reaction.

Lilo

Haha thank you! Yeah I think they found their stride from like late 2014 into 2015!

Koko3op

Absolutely not!! LOL, I've seen some nice clips though. Xiaojun during black on black made me FEEL THINGS. If i did, i'd have to create a new tier cos 4+ hours is INSANE.

Koko3op

hey quick question! will you be reacting to NCT nation concert? i know it’s hella long but just wondering 😂

Jordan Palmer

Lmao! I swear if I hadn't heard What is Love I probably wouldn't have given Exo a chance until maybe the Growl era. I remember when they debuted and I was an instant fan after hearing What Is Love. Mama wasn't it and it took me years to appreciate it. I like the live intro they've done of it but that's all. The rest of the album is enjoyable. I'm glad you've checked out Mama though disappointed. I understand completely.

Kym

HAHA NOT BA SING SE!!

Koko3op

These songs sound REALLY dated but I don't mind bc I rlly love half of these songs. Especially Heart Attack it's in my top 5 exo songs

Kai Leon

There is no exo wolf in ba sing se 🤣, but on a serious note tho, I have never listened to the studio versio of that song since I first heard it years ago. The live versions slaps tho, one of my favourite exo performances.

Rayal Grant

Yess exactly, but I feel like I know all their songs already but will see!

Koko3op

LOOOOL!

Koko3op

lmaooo I'm sorry the x over the face of he who shall not be named has me cracking up... Anyway, I thought this was for the MAMA album until I actually clicked and started watching. You are right, XOXO as an album is... it happened lol. This album truly has a special place in my heart because it was the era I started stanning EXO and it was my first ever K-Pop album purchase, but truly I was purchasing this album for Growl because she is that girl. I actually really enjoy Wolf now even though I didn't really like it at first, but the b-sides here are all pretty meh. The only one I still personally listen to is Heart Attack. I think it was a nice first full album start for them, but tbh their later albums (minis included) are definitely WAY better. Looking forward to seeing what you think of some of the songs!

Mica Ferguson

LMAO i just clocked after the video started playing. Damn, minus a few tracks, this album is pretty high on my ranking 👀 regardless i'm getting my snack

Hibz

Oh my mistake this IS the XOXO album LOOL

Koko3op

LOL I sometimes forget this album exists because I only saved the first 3 tracks onto a playlist and pretend XOXO full album is their first project. This will be interesting to relisten with you hahaha
