Q&A 2025
Added 2025-02-06 18:34:19 +0000 UTC
One question per patron and get your question in by Wednesday the 12th!
Alright folks, it's been a near year since our last Othais/Mae Q&A so what with studio revamp underway, we thought it might be time for another round of insanity!
Questions, of course, are from YOU. Our patrons!
Ask away and we shall do our best to answer. There are, of course, some limits to what we can cover without doing a whole week's worth of research, so bear that in mind and fire away!
(Just a reminder since we're seeing a lot of multipart questions, we have to stick to the one question rule otherwise we would die, so we will do like the previous years and pick one question out of your multi to answer.)
How many weapons are behind you when you do your videos? And what is the rarest one behind you as well?
Parabellum

Did Colt ever experiment with any middling frame sizes for C&B revolvers like the Remington Belt or Police sized revolvers? Or was it simply the Dragoon (large), Navy (middle), and Pocket (small)

It´s 1866 and Othais and Mae are moving to west to start a new life. How would you arm yourself to protect yourselfs from all the dangers of the trip? You´re on horseback and it´s grizzly country. You can choose from all guns what were available at the time but you´re limited what your horse can carry.

A question for the world's greatest master Sub2K gunsmith - for someone with hardly any access or experience with power tools (I have a dremel with half of a set of attachments), is it possible to cut a new slot to lock the bolt open to the left side? I like the Sub2K, but would like a more ergonomic way to charge it while keeping my right hand on the grip.

Deleted my last comment because I thought of a different question... I've been building a lot of model kits of Hungarian armor recently, in part because it's a country that people didn't realize made a surprising amount of their own unique tank designs during WWII, and then during the Cold War used Soviet tanks and now after the breakup of the USSR are using NATO equipment. In the world of small arms, what would you say is an equivalent country that has a surprising amount of native small arms designs, but also has a good mixture of foreign equipment?

Question: Did any non-Japanese nation also tie flags to their guns as means for friendly identification?
Context: Aside from the common myth of "bayonet flags" (which were usually just a soldiers Yosegaki flag) this is about cases where troops would tie flags to their guns to be identified by friendly troops in urban combat/by friendly aircraft, there are a few pictures of the former from the Battle of Shanghai. I've yet to see something like this done by a nation other than Japan.
Thanks for your amazing work, looking forward to the Murata episode (please whatever you do don't base it entirely on that recent Stanley Zielinski book. The way Sayama Jiro 佐山二郎 puts it in his book is much more comprehensive imo).

So I’m a Missouri boy that’s been enjoying a warm winter down in your neck of the woods. I’ve been working on storm clean up after Helene in Augusta GA and while down here I picked up a lovely triple lock in 455 and I was wondering if the British where finding that they where susceptible to grime getting into the locking surfaces did they ever consider assigning them for naval use since they wouldn’t have to deal with muck and grime? PS I converted over to ballistol because of you guys when I get a chance I plan on sending in a good gallon picture!

Hey Othias so in a previous Q&A you declared that the 1891 Carcano rifle would be the best rifle for the great war because of how cheap and easy it was for a small minor nation to to make for their war effort.
Well I am going to challenge you on this because I think there is a rifle that is way better than a Carcano from a technical, aesthetic, and human factors point of view, all while being possibly only a small fraction more expansive than the Carcano to produce, and that is the 1904 Mauser–Vergueiro.
Do you agree or disagree and if so why?
Also remember that there was a version made from leftover parts for the Brazilian Police in 7x57 Mauser, and last I checked there was no Carcano ever made in your favorite caliber Othias!

You have discussed in the past what the best WW1 rifles are on a personal level, but how much difference did the choice of gun make on a large scale? Leaving aside things like the Ross would there be much difference in the effectiveness of a division equipped with say Springfield M1903s as opposed to SMLE Mk3s or Gewehr 98s? Or would all reasonability modern rifles be effetely interchangeable?

I never got a complete answer to this question on the last Q&A. Would you ever consider going on a trip to Canada to do an episode on the various Chinese military arms that are in Canada? Such as the TYPE 81 and TYPE 97. This would be the first ever in depth review on these arms. The YouTube views would be very large for these episodes. You can look up the two rifles if you don't know what they are.

Have you considered doing a series on how smokeless powders impacted sporting cartridges between its introduction and the middle of the 20th Century? My latest projects have included three Husqvarna rifles in 9.3x92, 9.3x57, and 8x57 Mauser. Also, there is my .35 Whelen to round out my "medium bores". Following the wars, there was a glut of surplus powder on the market and there were a lot of wildcat cartridges developed by the likes of Keith, Whelen, Ackley, and others.
Mae, I wouldn't subject you to the recoil of any of the above cartridges, especially the Holland and Holland cartridges. Maybe Othias can give us some facial grimaces!

Other than the M1 Grand (and maybe the M1 Carbine), are there any other episodes that you somewhat are dreading doing because of the "1911 effect"? By that I mean, there's so much hype/buildup around the episode or subject that you are inevitably going to either disappoint people by reason of never being able to live up to the idea they've formed in their mind, or outrage people by presenting the data as opposed to fuddlore.
Hope this year goes really well for you guys and many of your plans come to fruition!

Hello Mae and Othais! I've been a subscriber since I got my first wage ever, but never remembered to ask anything in the Q&A. I'm not a collector nor a historian, so pardon the silly question:
What are your ideas on why rifles such as the Pieper 1893 (Yes, the revolving carbine there in your wall!) never really caught on, even today? Is there a fundamental flaw to sealed revolvers that makes them unusable for decently powered cartridges? Do you believe if such a gun appeared in say, the 1870-80s it could've seen wider adoption?
I highly admire you folks and your work, and it's an honour to have my (admitelly rather long) question on air! With love from Brasil.

In your G98 or Turkish Mauser research did you come across records of German WW1 production Gewehr 98 rifles exported to Turkey? I have seen several 1918 Oberndorf g98s with lange vizier and Turkish/Ottoman crescent markings on the receiver. I thought this was unusual and was wondering if you could offer some details

You have somewhat comprehensibly charted the development of revolver lockworks. Each minor change or slight improvement will give credit to a new man and change what name the lockwork will be referred to. In the modern day almost every pistol on the market has it's locking system designated as a Browning action. However the modern design is significantly different the last iteration Browning was primarily responsible for. I would think the changes are much greater that many of the small iterations of revolver lockworks. Setting aside the immense power that the Browning name still has a century after his death and therefore the desire of current manufacturers to invoke it, do you think the common modern designs are correctly referred to as Browning's? Should it another man be given the credit? Or do you think tilting barrel without a name attached is more fitting.

It surprises me that there weren't more early military rifles that had separate butt and forestocks, like the Lebel and Martini-Henry (that I know of at least). I would think that design style would be able to use more easily sourced wood, and would be easier to service. What do you think the reasons are for the two piece stocks not being more common?

Some of the shooting music picks itself (1903, Enfield / The Yanks are Coming, Long Way to Tipperary) but some of the early Russian or South American guns would require some work. Is there a historical method or game applied to the choice or do you have a historical music fan in your circles?

Mannlicher used the term "packet" loading to describe the clip system for his rifles, but we typically refer to it as "En-Bloc", regardless of the firearm (M1 Garand, Carcano, etc.). From what I've read the latter term is associated with John Pedersen in regards to his self loading rifle design, but did he really coin "En-Bloc", or was it already in use to describe the Mannlicher packet-loading system? Love the show!

Do you have or know where one can find pictures of the fully automatic Lugers and C96 guns tested by the Germans in WW1 before they settled on the more novel MP-18? I see them mentioned here and there, and with varying descriptions and details, but no photographic evidence.
If not, what do you think is the most accurate description? Because the details always seem to change from source to source.

Hey guys. I'm sure you've gotten this question before, but what's you guys' preferred method for concealed carry? Here in KY, it gets pretty hot and humid throughout most of thr year; and pocket carry is my only viable option. I imagine the weather in SC is even more humid than KY. Oh, and on a quick unrelated note, I want to thank Mae for introducing me to Greatest Estate Developer. It's very enjoyable.

I am one of them damn Yankees looking for country property in South Carolina for my wife and I to retire and build our dream home with a shooting range set up off our back porch. (She is a Southern gal) How many acres is your property out in the country and what is the minimum number of acres required by state law to shoot on your own property? According to the below quoted South Carolina state regulation it appears to be 25 acres; “Title 3, Chapter 31, Article 7, Section 23-31-510 (2), which states:
a landowner discharging a firearm on the landowner’s property to protect the landowner’s family, employees, the general public, or the landowner’s property from animals that the landowner reasonably believes pose a direct threat or danger to the landowner’s property, people on the landowner’s property, or the general public. For purposes of this item, the landowner’s property must be a parcel of land comprised of at least twenty-five contiguous acres. Any ordinance regulating the discharge of firearms that does not specifically provide for an exclusion pursuant to this item is unenforceable as it pertains to an incident described in this item; otherwise, the ordinance is enforceable.“. Next to the front steps I’m planning on stationing my full sized M1841 6pound cannon with carriage for pest control. 🦊 I https://hernironworks.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Hern-6-pdr-2-3-scale-100x100.jpg. Before you complain about people not from here moving in - the original settlers of South Carolina were the Spanish and unless you were against the pioneers crossing the plains in covered wagons to settle the west or the hardy souls who explored and built Alaska it is as American as it gets to move somewhere you are not from following your dream! I know the Boer Wars and the siege of Plevna played really heavily into their thinking, but you would think any general that survived World War One as a junior officer to go on to more senior ranks in the thirties and then World War II would look at all of the battle rifles of the 1950s and think they're unnecessary and too heavy.

You don't understand volley fire: the sights out to 2k yards were a conflation of the capabilities of the new high-velocity ammo and the old way of battle of marching a battalion up to another and letting fly w/ your smoothbores. ["Ready! Level! Fire!" was the old command pattern. Note the conspicuous absence of "Aim" when using smoothbore muskets...] Don't forget, there were a lot of old generals who had started their careers in the days of smoothbores by the end of the 19th century and the advent of smokeless powder.

Jake, you should know better: this is CHINATOWN! No, they did not. It bears repeating, the Army had recent experience w/ the Moros in the Philippines and the 1911 was intended as a primary arm for the *cavalry*, who were still horse-mounted at that time & expected to go up against other cavalry units; the 9mmP just doesn't qualify as a horse- or drug-addled zealot stopper!

Do you include mgs in the category of "small arms" since they're crew-served weapons? If so, then WW1 is the easy answer, since if Germany didn't have more mgs than all the other combatants combined at the start of the conflict, WW1 would not have lasted as long as it did.
If speaking "rifles" as the definition of small arm, then the Boer War, since the Boers used the superior range of their Mausers to stave off the far larger & better-equipped forces of the grandmother of 'yurp!

It has always interested me how, say, WWI firearms are manufactured. In your episodes you discuss the operational details of each firearm, many of which are fairly complex. You'll then provide the order and manufacturing details, which are typically into the thousands per month. I'd be interested in an episode in which you detail the manufacturing process from raw materials to finished product; maybe, for a No1 MkIII Enfield.
