Primer 182: Patron Release

Primer 182: Patron Release

Comments

EXCELLENT! Hopefully you can eventually cover the WEIRD early version of the magazine release in some detail. It kind of makes a statement, that the ultimate end product is SO well known, that a documentary of the forerunners ends up structured by how they are or are not like that end product.

Erik

In the shot starting at 14:39, the spring button plunger looks a bit out of focus. I don't know if it actually is, or the apparent fuzziness is due to wear.

David Herman

It's happening!

13th Bee

I don't know if it was part of the trials gear, but in practice the pistol and magazines were secured to the soldier by lanyards. Imagine galloping on horseback trying to use your pistol while two or three empty magazines flail about.

Mr. Lee

You’re a great American, Othias.

Lucas

It's an added expense to look out for - if you can't reload from a pouch of loose ammo, you have to have loaded magazines carried in some special container instead. Magazines cost money, and on horseback in particular you're unlikely to recover spent magazines outside of training environments - not a problem for the revolver - suddenly, these magazines become a one-use deal, requiring you to stockpile tons of spares. Flailing around with a 14+lb trigger is less likely to cause errant shots than a short 5lb trigger - and horses bucking and going berserk are a very wild ride, so it's not an unreasonable concern. Horses are terrifying when riled, and a combat environment is likely to cause them some small distress.

Comrade Crozier

At 39:18, should be Tweak instead of Tweek. Also, you left out the most crucial detail: which gun did better vs pine or oak?

Comrade Crozier

I’m gonna enjoy this early release

Ian Lund

FANTASTIC!

Tom Briggman

The one guy looks like Rob. When you see it, you'll know.

Chairman

Thank you Othias as well as Mae for giving such a fascinatingly detailed history of the development of what we all know as the Colt 1911. One can clearly see the "family resemblance" from 1900 through the decade.

RAYMOND Alexander CALLOWAY

The long pull of a double-action revolver is quite different from the shorter & much lighter pull of a single-action semiauto. But what is really laughable was the Calvary Board's complaint that "readying the pistol for service (by racking the slide) might disturb the mount..." Really? More than holding a pistol at arm's length and SETTING IT OFF _right behind the poor animal's head?!?_ Really straining at gnats there, they were... πŸ™„

Bruce Brodnax

I always thought the lack of safety complaint was overly dramatic too, but you do have to remember that the revolver had a rebounding hammer and something like a 16-19# trigger pull with almost .5 inch of travel.

Mr. Lee

I have really enjoyed watching all of these Colt pistol episodes leading up to the 1911! Really love those 38 caliber 1900s and 1902 models BTW. Great stuff! Thank You!

Jonathan Hudak

Excellent!! I have really enjoyed seeing all of these episodes leading up to the 1911. I can't believe we're almost there! So cool to see this ultra rare model too thank you!

Jonathan Hudak

Fantastic episode...love it!

Richard Goth

Sempai noticed me.

David Brewer

Considering the cavalry complaint (with the long weird quote) - how exactly was a double or triple action revolver any different? 7 vs 6 shots not much different and one can certainly flail a revolver about. Reloading lose ammo into a revolver on horseback? I'd love to see an explanation of their thinking. (Or did they just decide they didn't like single action triggers?)

Bryan Willman

Considering the cavalry complaint (with the long weird quote) - how exactly was a double or triple action revolver any different?

Bryan Willman

Thank you, I was beginning to worry that I'd die before seeing you cover the venerable 1911.

Hank

I agreed and this change is already in the works but would have taken too long to meet the patron release deadline.

C&Rsenal

I believe Tooless should be spelled Toolless. Also as pointed out over on YT by Mildcat, the word Tweek should be spelled tweak. Personally had no trouble understanding the animations and can't find any other nitpicks. Thanks though for all the hard work to finally bring this story together. Looking forward to final release and spending 8 hours binge-watching the whole saga to cap everything off.

Benjamin de Groot

18:27 you call the barrel bushing a barrel collar.

Mr. Lee

The 1903ish FN is used in the flow chart explaining how we got to the 1909 but isn't introduced earlier and has no context. - It might help to visualize the difference between the dropping barrel and tilting barrel in the superposed animation if a line showing the bore axis is included, perhaps also including the barrel bushing. - No mention is made about the barrel's orientation being changed from horizontal to a slightly downward angle. I am curious if this happened in the 1909 or if it was part of making the 1910 more compact?

Mr. Lee

I didn't find the animation very clear regarding the tilting barrel. When the animation highlights the link swinging the barrel is not present (except as a sort of pale smudge at the left?) so we don't clearly see it pulling backwards, tilting out of the recesses on the slide, stopping. I do already know how this works, but if I didn't I don't think this would help me visualise the locking system at all.

David Brewer

excuse me goodsir would you have time to talk about our lordand savior john and moses... starts to get 1911ish. nice.

Guido Schriewer

From their prior descriptions of how Bruno works, the answer is "Something like that..."

Bruce Brodnax

The heavens opened & the divine light shone forth! For behold, it was the progenitor of God's Own Pistol, and his prophet (John) Moses (Browning) showed us The Way....

Bruce Brodnax

This village has one of the best idiots evar Love your work you lot

Minion

It’s a very nice pistol I’ve actually got I am in a poster of that gun on my wall

Parabellum

How the hell did Bruno do that animation? Did y'all just bring a set of verniers and get every single dimension on every single part?

David Herman

I'm very glad to see you were finally able get ahold of a 1909! Good job with the video as usual, and much thanks to everyone who has made this series possible.

Violaceum

I’ve been waiting for this episode for ages! Thanks for all your work on this series.
