Fair to say it is harder but I suspect the fact it is easier to be entertained at home is a bigger culprit.

The “not wanting to go outside” thing might also be that transport to get to things is much more expensive than it was back in the late aughts when I was a teenager and things in general are a lot more expensive due to inflation versus what entry level wages are. Barring “I need to work to survive” the costs versus how cheap and accessible doing things digitally or at home is nowadays makes sense to me.

Thanks for the insights gang. As for the digitization aspect: I think a lot of that boils down to cost and the intricacies of collection management policy. It's not simply a matter of getting experts in (usually without gloves, but washed hands though), but of getting the equipment in that can do the job, then having a number of people dedicated to the job. That's expense on the level of budget only available to large national or government organisations. The second is a matter of how much momentum you can actually exert and how good communication is within. Recorded some footage for a short video that required access to 12th c. Ibn Sina manuscripts and the person organising the shoot had a heck of a time just getting into contact with the right person within the library, then hearing we couldn't bring any sort of tripod or other equipment in and had at most one hour to do the filming to get a 4 minute segment plus a selection of B-roll. When we arrived, the ground staff in Special Collections had to check because they weren't told who was coming in the first place, and most of the questions we had during filming were answered with "I couldn't tell" or "I'd have to check", which all seems to suggest a lot of institutional disconnect.
