Q&A Special with Rob from BritishMuzzleLoaders!
Added 2022-12-08 07:03:54 +0000 UTC
One question per patron and get your question in by Sunday 12/11!
Alright boys and girls, it's time for a holiday special! Rob from BritishMuzzleLoaders came into town so not only did we hit the range, but we figured we'd sit down with him and have ourselves a Q&A with the Qs coming from you, our patrons! So put your thinking helmets on and pop us your question. We'll do our best to answer them all. There are, of course, some limits to what we can cover without doing a week's worth of research!
Darn i was too late, otherwise I would have asked Rob, If the No5 Lee enfield had been adopted earlier and used in the war would it have faired as well or better than the No4 in ww2?

You are a loyal British subject.
It is early to mid days of WW1, you have volunteered to serve, and you are being kitted out to go to the front.
Is there any rifle put to this purpose at this time, that you would discard at the first chance to upgrade?
What would that weapon be, and to what would you upgrade?

One of the first rifles I ever bought was a "Martini-Enfield" in .303 that I soon found to be a Khyber Pass gun. Was there an actual effort to convert Martini-Henry's to .303 for the British Army or colonies or was it more a local conversion thing like my Khyber Pass rifle?

During the conflict in Cuba in 1899 America got a taste of the then new 7mm mauser cartridge and of course the rifle to go with it. A lot of European countries were watching this conflict along with other going on during this period. Why was it that the 7mm mauser cartridge never gained the fallowing that heavier rounds like the 30-06, 8mm mauser, 7.62x54R, etc gained? Personally the 7mm mauser round is my favorite full powered 30 cal cartridge.

It is 1905. You are responsible for Capability Development in your respective War Offices/Departments. The 2nd Boer War and recent Russo-Japanese War have given you some pointers to what the future may have in store, but it is far from clear. Given the technology of the day, what one dismounted close combat capability would you have wanted to develop to have the greatest impact in a future Great War? And what might it have meant for your doctrine and training?

Hi Rob. I'm always bewildered by the quality of your videos, so keep at it as long as you humanly can! Proud to be your patreon as well.
Question is: will you ever find a venue (even without the gun since if I understand correctly FALs are illegal in Canada) to talk about the cold war commonwealth soldier? Even as 'lessons learned from ww2 and brought forward' kind of deal.

Hi Rob, with your exploration into British and Commonwealth rifle drill and range practice which do you think was better, WWI or WWII? I am not so naive that I don't realise that they were completely different wars and fighting styles but for your own personal shooting.

I asked Bloke and The Chap the following question on their recent Q&A but they didn't have any definitive answers. Similarly, I would like to pick both of your brains:
"Why do the buttplates of the Lee Enfield No.1 Mk.3 and No.4 rifles have a more pronounced side-to-side convex curve compared to their contemporaries?
When shooting them I love the slick action but I'm not a fan of how they seem to focus recoil on a smaller area of my shoulder than say a Mauser or a Mosin."

It is probably helpful to note that the LeMat's marketing at the time specifically stated *grapeshot* revolver, not "buckshot," so with the correct loading it probably had more success in practical use than the improperly-loaded repops do today in target work. Also, the only users who favored them all seem to have been cavalry (or at least mounted) officers, so the extra bullets and the big barrel in close work when the battle raged hot & heavy were probably seen as advantages by the users.

In your research of the history, development and deployment of more than several small arms have you noticed a certain theme of the process that sticks out?
Been watching your show for years and I’ve come to the conclusion that there really isn’t a “perfect” rifle, handgun, machine gun etc. The theme I noticed is that all designs have compromises even to this day.

The P14 and the 1917 Rifle .30 are objectively better in most respects than the SMLE and Springfield 1903, but also compare favorably when matched against many of the other popular rifles of the time.
There were both political and logistical headwinds against the U.S. and U.K adopting them as their mainline rifles, but why didn’t they see more success in the export market?
