So, .45 Scofield could be fired from either revolver. .45 Colt only from the 1873/SAA. Boxes were labeled ".45 Colt Long" by the US military so as to help prevent remote forts getting crates of ammo they could not use. Short version.

Let's not confuse the term for a literal goose gun with this revolver just because it is "honkin". ;)

Erik

I think a major conversational point you may be missing is to compare the ergonomic advantages of a GOOD single action to the disadvantages of a BAD double action. To say that double action is automatically better on a gun where the operator's hand is squirming all over the grip to reset between shots seems a bit blind to certain realities. Considering that the practice of the time was to shoot one-handed, a well-designed single action with less squirrely mannerisms on which all you need to move is your thumb may be practically faster in circumstances when someone is trying to part your hair with a sword.

Erik

I always thought it was written as 45 Long Colt on the box so it wouldn't be confused with 45 ACP by users with no knowledge of firearms.

Daniel Falch

45 long colt is what is written on the box if you want to buy ammo for it now. So anyone who gives you grief about it has to understand, that’s now the common term for it

Chris Johnson

Mae is REALLY having to dig for that double action trigger. That looks like an awful shooter along with having to readjust her grip like on a single action army. But bird's head grips don't work well in single action either. And Mae always on mic patrol.

Wait, is it Birmingham or Birmingham?

Totally off topic but just finished watching Drachinifel's 30th January livestream and it seems you have been emailing him. I'm intrigued and crossing everything for a future cross over. Also wearing my cycle of violence t-shirt so all is good here :-)

Could it be that the audio is a little bit out of sync?

Dominiek Verbeke

Complete. Marshal. Insanity. You have my attention once more, Othias

Drew Rebhorn

Nothing worse than incomplete martial insanity. I'll get my tinfoil hat, and let myself out...

A flash photo of the referenced revolvers in the discussion would help us old folks.....

FYI, the card for "Sheriff's Model" mis-spelled Sheriff.

I wonder if this Jeff Milton had a brother named Jim?

PS: I have copies of “Defending the Dominion - Canadian Military Rifles 1855-1955” and “The Military Arms of Canada” if you’d like some scans of reference materiel.

Hey guys, I have a couple corrections: the Métis (pronounced “May-Tee) were not really french speaking or truly “native” like you might consider the “indians”. They used english as well as a creole of native languages, french and scots english called “michif”. Most Red River Métis were mixed with Scottish ancestry as well as French and Native as they are products of the early fur trade. Louis Riel is pronounced “Loowie Ree’elle”. Tensions at the Red River colony were more Catholic-Protestant as opposed to French-English. Fun fact, Thomas Scott was a protestant Orangemen who was executed (in part) for talking non stop shit and pissing off his jailors for the duration of his captivity. Canadian armament at the time of the 1885 Northwest Rebellion was not Spencer rifles rather Sniders for 98% of the infantry and a few Martini Henrys used by at most 2 units. The massive logistics train had a mixture of Spencer carbines and 1866 Peabodies (.56-50 was issued for both). Native guides and trackers were supplied Spencer carbines and allowed to keep them as part of their contract. I am unaware of any source referencing Spencer rifle use in Western Canada after the Fenian scare on the Great Lakes. Overall your presentation on this part of Canadian history is really good, thanks for making the connection. Cheers from Winnipeg.
