Krag-Jørgensen Speed Loader

Krag-Jørgensen Speed Loader

Comments

Much blood was lost in the filming of this video!

Mae Responding: Funnily enough I didn't even notice the little bugger, was too in the zone.

My bet on why a loader like this did not become stranded issue is cost, for the cost of this you could do tons more stripper clips and with the Krag they decided even that was not worth it.

tenofprime

Did you smack the mosquito after getting your footage?

lovot

Yes, but you can load the speed loader during lulls between battle so that they are ready for fast reloads in the heat of battle (same as modern detachable magazines).

It takes longer to load that thing than it does to just load the gun?

Mike Scharf

Holy cow where do you find these gems?!?!

“Hey guys what if we made a separate box magazine thing to load our internal capsule magazine??”

K. D. Campbell

Othias, y'all ought to repost it with this link or tack it on... Really neat stuff that's had me lusting for a '96 K-J in 6.5x55 Swede for years now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cnAwRJc7Sw

Jim F

kind of large though not bulky. seems to work.

Clever bit of kit, your average doughboy would have probably have lost it/broken it verrrry quickly then got himself in trouble with his sarge. Also, it takes as long to load as the Krag itself so whats the advantage? Another piece of kit designed by good backroom engineers that looked great in testing but had almost no practical use. Thanks guys, as always you come up with really interesting stuff.

Such a cool device, however I can see why distributing this army wide could be problematic. Grab it wrong as you pull it out to load and there goes your ammo.

tenofprime

Cool, but that thing is too comlicated for the average squadie.

Stephen

Very intersting.

Matteo Manino

Shout out to the mosquito

Berderger

Right, a magazine to load a magazine..... got it.

The US actually was looking into a stripper clip system called the Parkhurst. There were some other designs submitted as well but the Parkhurst is the only one that actually saw around 200ish (give or take) American krags fitted with the system in the very early 1900s. However, since the Krag was being ditched for the 1903, the army decided it wasn't worth it to continue with the experiments. This design was a design by Kongsberg workers in the 20s that they basically presented to the Norwegian Army who were like "nah were good" and so they provided them to civilian shooters instead. There were several other designs made throughout the years, there was even chargers made for the Danish krags for issue to troops, but since they were too expensive (and cuz the Danes didn't see a need for quick charger loading) they dropped it too. unfortunately none of the chargers or speed loaders for the Krags really ever stuck.

Is this for real?! I mean is it period authentic item? I know the US Army didn’t have anything like this for our Krags, but was somebody else selling it and/or using it?

Also: This seems like a test run for the shotgun series format, yes? If so, it seems like a good format, though a shotgun will be significantly more complex and therefore require more illustration/explanation without the use of speech - I can't judge how well that will work until I see it, really.

So THAT'S what Rasmus was mailing!

Oh hell yeah, I need to grab me one of those myself. There seems to have been so darn many Krag charger and speed loader designs, and Andersen & Braathen's seems like the only one that actually ended up being produced in semi-large numbers, although it was almost exclusively for civilians. Lookin' at some early patents by Krag and Jørgensen, they had come up with a similar looking charger pack design, but I don't know if any were actually made. I wonder if these Kongsberg workers took inspiration from that design too. If any of Y'all wanna see what a professional Norwegian shooter can do with these, check this clip out: https://youtu.be/S5ycG87H1b8

Never knew those existed
