Page 42 "Stuck In a Bear Trap" - that's a super cool article. Being from that area and having hunted at the family deer camp myself, its amazing to read about hunting and trapping that far back. The wildlife up there is definitely different from the summer of 1854. Your chances of running into a wolf like that now are almost none.

If we didn't already have multiple hedgehogs, we'd be right there with 'em. EDIT: looking back through my photos, a shockingly large proportion of my "hedgehog sleeping on Chris" pics involve a C&Rsenal t-shirt. They appreciate the softness.

Mae Responding: He's onto us! Our true goal for this whole series has really been to substantially increase the guinea pig population. It's funny, we've actually have had a fair bit of viewers write in to tell us our videos were a direct cause of the family ending up with guinea pigs.

This reminds of the current Backwoodsman magazine. I was surprised to see the Newton rifle, which was essentially an interrupted screw lug Mauser, and probably the mechanism Ross should have used.

so cool!

This great! Had warmer barrel and the USSAC pistol pocket knife- new goal!

Page 114: A Bannerman milsurp advert, and an ad for raising guinea pigs. This is C&Rsenal, no doubt.

How did the Cavies Distributing Co end up in Kanas City? Did load of South Americans move there? And why is Kanas City not in Kanas?

I've only read up to page 40 (Preparing Bunny For The Kettle); just after an article calling for cats to be taxed to save wild birds. In the first 20 pages however I counted 51 adverts. 8 for general stuff. 1 (over 3 pages) for rewards for subscriptions to the magazine: and 42 from fur traders begging for furs. I'd imagine this reduced the cat population a lot more efficiently than taxing them ever could.

Is that a model 1890 on the cover? .22 ?

Marriage proposals; love the adds for lovely, "wealthy", "healthy" potential brides. Photos in plain brown wrappers available. Hmmm. Q & A's interesting. Adverts for Newton rifles were neat also. The story by the fly-fisherman drowning a Mtn Lion then killing its kits and skinning the lot, followed by catching a large fish with a nestling bird as bait on a fly; wow! Great stuff! Thanks for the read.

Mae Responding: Lol, I also enjoyed the Automatic Repeating Rifle on page 116.

Mae Responding: You make it to page 133 yet? Some of these ads in the classifieds are cracking me up.

The hand warmer on page 52/54, and the huntsman knife on 114/116

Did anyone else notice on page 112, the add for raising guinea pigs?

People complain of ads now, but wow, 25+ pages of ads (90% of those are 'no, WE pay the most for your furs!') before you get to anything resembling an article. I love reading them all the same, the style and use of language of the time is fascinating, compared to the relatively snappier and more casual way ads are approached now.

I love that the manager of a powder division was a celebrity endorsement (?)...

Very informative of a lost past of freedom. We would love to see reprints of old sporting catalogs of this era! THANKS
