Comments

Awesome! I have one of the 1889 trials rifles if you guys need a very early example or an 1869/71 or an 1878/81

C W

For future shows you should look into doing ones on the history of some of the individual gun designers!

Kurtis Martonik

If yall need a photograph taken say 1898 or so of a Prussian artillery unit with 4 reichsrevolvers displayed on the ground( two are partially hidden) for that episode revisited just to throw in let me know.

James G. Jones

I saw that. I have no idea how they are keeping the thing water tight

C&Rsenal

Most of the firearms "restorations" I have seen on YT have been brutally bad or even downright dangerous!

C&Rsenal

It can be!

C&Rsenal

One day!

C&Rsenal

That's in the works!

C&Rsenal

Before you transition out of WW1... why not cover neutral countries like Switzerland? The swiss vetterli rifles have the most fascinating mechanism and the 1889 started the straight pulls.

C W

Forgotten Weapons and C&Rsenal vidoes in new article: Ukrainian Troops Are Still Using This Pre-World War I-Era Maxim Machine Gun In Combat (https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/32098/ukrainian-troops-are-still-using-this-pre-world-war-i-era-maxim-machine-gun-in-combat)

James Caldwell

I'me sure Othais and May have seen many other tool or old objects restoration youtube channels on the intertubes. A few of them are restoring old firearms as well as tools. Diresta is a surprising example of that. I am wondering how to reach the "Maker" / thinkerer section of the population who might get interested in CandRsenal just to understand how things are made and they came to be. The "This old house" crowd ... or should we say..."This old gat" :-)

Jean-Luc Larose

Man I love your banter. Pity I'm in the northeast so I can't join it in person. Maybe the Discord is worth joining...

Steven Faiello

I will receive the email about the video or whatever it happens to be but I cannot watch it. Says become a patreon to unlock so then I go through that process beginning of each month. Doesn't happen with anvil or forgotten weapons just here. Idk. It's easy enough to do each month but just strange that I'm receiving emails but won't let me watch content until I do that

Travis Tremmel

Ouch, that deadline is coming soon. That list definitely needs to be passed around tto possible firearms collector

Jean-Luc Larose

I have no idea how to do it but somehow, there has to be a way to grab Adam Savage's attention and do at least a collab or shout out on one of his project. The maker and costumer community seem ripe as a new audience for a reference show like yours. Builders love to learn about how things work, about history, and they love to have reference material of the kind you provide.

Jean-Luc Larose

Plane savers (youtube channel) is building a reproduction biplane in Yellowknife. Probably no way to mount anything to it... probably unfeasable but I had to put the idea out there.

Jean-Luc Larose

I would enjoy seeing the Reichsrevolver episode revisited. I still think it's a interesting revolver, given its quirk and all.

James G. Jones

Your recollections about your dad's advice really struck a chord with me -- it was almost a paraphrase of one of my favorite passages by the Stoic philosopher Epictetus: Of things that exist, some are in our power and some are not in our power. Those that are in our power are conception, choice, desire, aversion, and in a word, those things that are our own doing. Those that are not under our control are the body, property or possessions, reputation, positions of authority, and in a word, such things that are not our own doing. Also, the Repercussions concept rocks!

DaveJD

Once we leave the war we're going to just ditch the fixed list entirely, so no more "focused" primer series. These sorts of items will end up in there as they become available, along with information.

C&Rsenal

That's interesting, how does it alert you?

C&Rsenal

These will likely roll into the post WWI Primer series

C&Rsenal

https://candrsenal.com/wishlist/

C&Rsenal

I've definitely considered it, however, that could be fairly daunting. I've also considered starting with popular modern firearms and working backwards to see where certain features first appear.

C&Rsenal

'Stirring the pot' refers to the outhouse pot that people shat in. Still profane, sorry Mae.

Mark

Also should do a 1917 movie review!!!!! That movie is awsome

Phil Byrd

Where is a list of weapons your looking for? Also this is not a 1911 :P

Phil Byrd

Could do a series on early cartridge guns such as the snider/Martini henry etc.

Timothy Billow

Love these. Patreon must not like u guys. Every first of the month I have to resubmit my patreon level to your channel. I don't have to do that with any other of my patreon donations

Travis Tremmel

1. Mae: You need to make sure your put your Othias on a leash and take him out for walks where he can sniff stuff, chew on sticks, and pee on trees. If you keep him in a cave, the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Firearms Researchers will come after you. XD 2. As for transitioning out of WWI: How about some of the equipment that either didn't make it in before the Armistice, or was the result of "what were the lessons we took out of this four-year mess?" that didn't necessarily last to become a proper part of WWII? Stuff like the SMLE No1 MKV where they decided peep sights were worth having; why the 1911 became the 1911A1; rimfire or other cheap ammo / non-ammo trainers; struggles with "we just got done with the War to End All Wars - why are you doing weapon R&D?"; Thompsons (research menace though they might be). Since these all transition from the trenches, odds are you have a lot of the documentation already. Might serve to "Keep Serenity flying".

Erik

As long as the pilot was not paid for the flight, no. If you like I can send you the part 61 details, but the easy button is as long as the passenger does not pay more than their share of fuel, oil, or rental fees it’s legit.

Gary Newman

Patreon lets you upload .mp3 files and put them into a post, but it has to be separate from the video post.

moosemaimer

No she'd be Crew (Gunner)

Stephen Woods

As you were speaking about other potential projects I thought I’d voice my idea. It may very well be completely redundant given how you work up the history in the Primer episodes but: would you consider doing a limited series on the history of history of specific arsenals and manufacturers? Like I said, I know you work the history of inventors and manufacturers usually parallel with the arms themselves but I think specific videos solely on that topic would be super interesting! Just a thought! I absolutely love the format already and will support you guys as long as you’re there. But the talk of new projects got me excited and I know it’s something you guys would do justice to. Cheers for everything you do!

Jack Fairbrother

"Enfield dogging" just sounds so bad from a British slang POV. (You don't want to go dogging in Enfield.)

Chris Crowther

wouldn't Mae be a passenger for hire?

C&Rsenal

70 degrees last week. 48 this week...

C&Rsenal

Yes. However those periods have pretty big archival gaps. Will be tricky to settle into a new method. That's kind of why I want to go after the Reprocussion idea to help practice. It provides a clear separation from Primer where we can experiment.

C&Rsenal

Nothing compares to the Enfield dogging.

C&Rsenal

The Madsen episode that's coming was taken from about 5 languages. We'll manage however we have to!

C&Rsenal

I didn't say it but I've also learned that you discover who YOU want to respect you. Then you earn that respect.

C&Rsenal

Thank.

C&Rsenal

I just want to do that anyway.

C&Rsenal

I feel like the air-speed is a necessary factor though....

C&Rsenal

I appreciate it everyone. However our balance is so critical that I am very much trying not to scare ANYONE off. Resting easy is how you slip behind the wave. Best to keep paddling even if you're ahead. Also we have a responsibility to deliver on the funds we've been entrusted with.

C&Rsenal

Wooo!

C&Rsenal

I suspect we will see more... bursts. But our retention rate from such bursts is usually very low. HOWEVER. We easily have the most engaged audience of any of the guntubers I have spoken to. Thanks to our supporters we punch above our weight in terms of channel size.

C&Rsenal

We will endeavor for MP3 but I don't know of a way to limit a podcast to subscribers.

C&Rsenal

Including squibs? Maybe 2 dozen? Even discounting the sub-model variants on this list... it is sizeable. https://candrsenal.com/wishlist/

C&Rsenal

True, a big stumbling block is also the cross-research. Some of why we're getting better is because we have a lot more context and tend to flush out details from random sources for other, random guns.

C&Rsenal

I am AWARE of poop.

C&Rsenal

Yes, we will try and revisit some guns that had extended use.

C&Rsenal

...probably... I'm asking our web host if we can toss them there without much trouble.

C&Rsenal

right?

C&Rsenal

thank

C&Rsenal

To piggyback on that, afternoon is the time from noon to sunset and evening has usually been defined as the time between "suppertime" and "bedtime". Back in the old days of only three TV networks plus PBS you could define it as the time between the 5/6 o'clock news and the 10/11 o'clock news (depending on time zone).

Brian Hall

FAA says you can't get close enough to cause a collision hazard, the formation must be agreed on by PICs, can't carry a passenger for hire, cant do for benefit of charity, community, or non-profit event. G2G!

Gary Newman

I really get a kick out of listening to you two doing the verbal ramble. I always imagine you as sitting on your front porch although surely even in the Charleston area January is not front porch weather.

Wayne Dygert

If ya did the Civil War/Old West Expansion.... you would still have public domain, yeah?

Benjamin Myers (Bishop Steiner)

I think more people are dogging you about the 1911 as a running gag. By the way, The best part of Mae is the smile she makes at the end of each shooting segment.

Robin Roberts

Agreed, there is a sorry state of Swiss gun literature in the English language. Poyer's Collector's Only book is kind of a joke. I have never heard a bad thing about Die Repetiergewehre der Schweiz, but then you again need better German skills.

Hunter Compton

That one I can answer..

Mark Becht

Not only do they want their free ice cream, they want to tell you how to make the ice cream, the machine, buy the ingredients, what store to shop at, etc. I was worried about people's opinions of me earlier in life, and got out of it too. Nice to hear it's a human condition, and it's beatable with support and will.

Drizzle

Not whiny bastards need to speak up moar. You guys do your thing and my $$ will keep coming in.

Tiger in man's clothing

What time is Twilight? You can define twilight simply as the time of day between daylight and darkness, whether that's after sunset, or before sunrise. It's a time when the light from the sky appears diffused and often pinkish. The sun is below the horizon, but its rays are scattered by Earth's atmosphere to create the colors of twilight.

TAOFLEDERMAUS

Good chat, and will confirm my commitment for 2020, cheers

Andy Oshea

That's an idea that the fudds and tacticools at my range might actually agree to do together.

Gerbils McFadden

The people who are happy don't usually speak up about it. Only people who complain are really vocal.

Gerbils McFadden

My grandfather talked about training to be an aircraft gunner they drove them around in trucks shooting at skeet. Could you guys find a place to do that? Also to train shooting from an actual aircraft they would shoot at a large sheet towed behind another aircraft.

Gerald Drake

For an approximation of air-to-air shooting, I saw Iain Harrison from Recoil magazine shooting a pistol from the back of a moving Bronco. The Bronco had a roll cage that acted as a turret ring. Then all you would need would be a moving target on a track, like the Mover at the Bianchi Cup competition.

Martin Morehouse

I'm in the same boat. I trust you guys to do your thing professionally. I may not watch every episode, but knowing all this information is available for posterity is what keeps me in it. That, and the guinea pigs.

Austin Leeds

Wow. Based on you guys conversation, I suppose I’m in the minority that just pays you guys to do your thing and whatever content comes out, I’m good with. I don’t ever really feel the need to pester you about stuff because I know you’re working. I mean, I suppose if the channel goes dark for a calendar year, I’d probably pull my funding but other than that, I’m good.

alphawhiskey

Love the Unloaded episodes!

VintagePhone

You think C&R can/will experience significant growth once you get out of WWI (1914-1918)? Perhaps the WWI audience has just plateaued?

Arturo Ceron

Would be nice if you could make this available as podcast.

Patrick H.

Realistically, at this point, how many more WWI guns will you be able to get your hands on for "normal" Primer episodes before you switch to "squibs"? What about WWI guns you can't even physically get your hands on to just look at (i.e. just photos or drawings)?

Arturo Ceron

whatever you guys do when the WW1 pickings get lean is going to be ok with me. A suggestion would be to dip back into the past with guns that preceded the guns which were highlighted in the Primer episodes. Or the other idea is to go past that because the 20 years of history between the wars didn't see the end of weapons development. Something like the VZ 26 light machine gun or the developments of the Thompson. lots of history there.

Christopher Pettirsch

Othais likes poop.

joseph howerton

Will you guys do extensions for weapons that were used in both WWI and WWII?

Polaxymer

I don't know, but I'm sure it's completely unregulated in some states (and very regulated in others) in terms of what you can do with drones on private property. That won't hold forever, but it should for now. As for the FAA, I'm no pilot, but I do know that some of their regulations kick in at different altitudes. Biplane + huge piece of land in Texas or Montana (or Alaska) + drone + FAA loophole might do the trick

Jackson Darr

Any chance you could upload thois somewhere as a downloadable mp3? Then I wouldn't be tied to my computer to listen to it.

Brian Taylor

Yeah that ;-)

Derek Putley

What's a 1911?

Minion

Heh. Poop.

Chris Crowther

10:46 As we say done here... "Yeah, nah". You're your own thang. Ian's great and all, but he's not doing what you both do.

Minion

ooh neat

C&Rsenal

hmmm

C&Rsenal

can you legally fly dro es near planes?

C&Rsenal

then comes stage 2: the FAA

C&Rsenal

I want to do quicky vids on awful guns

C&Rsenal

... well it is 5:20 now...

C&Rsenal

Folks, thanks very much for this update. Sorry to hear about all Othais' problems with motorcycle carbs - it reminded me of the problems I had getting my "pipe & slippers" BMW R1150RT running again, when that came out of hibernation one year. I only had two cylinders and two separate fuel injectors to grapple with there. Please don't work too hard and please do try to maintain a sensible balance between your work and lives.

Derek Putley

The Sand Pebbles and Boardwalk Empire are probably just about in your period for US firearms as well

chris hodgson

The two biplanes thing, Adam Savage did it in an episode of his new show last year. Peter Jackson has a large collection and they when down to New Zealand and strapped up a couple with lasers and sensors.

A Union Thug

Some of the film nerd sites (Weekly Planet) post up commentary tracks for movies. If you guys are stuck for things to do I would definitely listen to you opinion on the recent spate of WW1 movies, particularly 1917, They Shall Not Grow Old... actually you could do Paths of Glory, All Quiet.., Lawrence of Arabia.. even the The Blue Max is surprisingly entertaining https://corben-dallas.blogspot.com/2018/02/is-blue-max-1966-imperial-germanys.html

chris hodgson

As for what to shoot at, I'm sure you can get a drone to mimic a biplane and function as a target.

Jackson Darr

Can you find a biplane to borrow? Ha! Y'all regularly borrow crew-served machine guns. There are guys out there with mortars, rocket launchers, anti-aircraft guns, tanks, and legal artillery. Someone out there has a biplane that you can borrow. In fact, I'd wager that the Venn diagram of people who have access to machine guns and howitzers has a decent overlap with the people who have access to biplanes.

Jackson Darr

I would love to see a Remington 51 video once you get out of WWI. I'm kinda surprised Ian hasn't done a video on that goofy gun yet

David Herman

I saw this 11:20 PST. Dear lord gang, how late are you staying up in the Carolinas??? Sleep well. I'll listen well in the morning when I'm sober.
