Episode 60

So quick update:

At the moment we are on track for our first negative growth month on Patreon.  We're down all of $1.60 but I think it says something about us reaching the peak of our current market.

So if anyone has ideas about outreach, have at it.  We're a bit slammed through November but early next year I could start trying to reach out to podcasts, interviews, etc.

Thanks for all the support so far!

BTW I have not received my t-shirts yet. Any idea when they might arrive?

Greg Bastian

I am increasing my pledge. You are a great job. Excellent content and video.

Maybe consider contacting Ian at Forgotten Weapons and see if there's something y'all can collaborate on. He's a Francophile and has a wall of early French bolt actions & 550K subscribers. Maybe Ian needs something fixed on one of his firearms that Mark could help with? I heard he also just bought a 30/06 Chauchat.........

I dont know much but about drawing in new subscribers, but here's an idea. I know you focus mostly on guns, but maybe a side project of war stories from WWI would draw some historical interest. Maybe a more in-depth telling of some of the interesting stories you've come across in your research.

Heck, I just appreciate when people share our links

GL1100. Layers on layers of issues to unpack

C&Rsenal

Yeah, I need to check back in

Stiff upper lip old boy, one data point doesn't make a trend.

I do my best to postwhore ya'll out as far and wide as possible, because the information is just too damn good NOT to spread around. Every once in a while I hear about the show on gun podcasts. I found you through an old episode of the Handgun Radio Show, where you got a plug again last week (as well as a tongue-in-cheek accusation that you're ruining the market for old .32's). Maybe revisiting some of the shows you were on way back at the beginning (that may gotten a larger audience since then) could be worth it. Either way, I think you'll see an uptick again when the MG videos drop. Who doesn't love a belt-fed? Keep up the great work!

"Horizontally opposed 4 cyl carburetor" sounds like a Honda Gold Wing from somewhere between '76 & '87 [after '87, they still used carbs (only two; easier to balance!) but went to the 6cyl in the GL1500...] More old bike stuff to take your mind off the old gun stuff?

While it would be great....and wholly justified if your followers upped their contributions, and of course any TV exposure would greatly increase your reach if not your base, grass roots efforts are the more likely enduring support. Since everyone here is obviously WEB savvy (or they wouldn't have found the bloody series to begin with), it would behoove all true believers to get out the word on all the various forums that they visit and participate in. While this is WWI focused, my experience is that history and gun nuts appreciate all eras. As such, just because a forum specializes in an area unrelated to WWI or firearms doesn't mean that patrons here shouldn't be plugging the show wherever. I would think the NSSA would be a natural to plug this content to its members. It is of course the nature of most folks to consider promotion someone else's job, but the reality is today that if you appreciate something and want it to continue and succeed, it is YOUR duty to support it through your own promotions and not leave everything up to the folks that are already over tasked through providing content.

Richard Anderson

Luckily we are visiting Marty in November so I can follow up on this.

I habe considered a more traditional documentary format experimental piece. But it would be massively time consuming...

C&Rsenal

I feel like....maybe

too much!

I'd suggest providing some shorter, more accessible videos from material you already have and just include the lightbox photos, "patented plastic pokey hand" description, animation, and Mae shooting for a few related guns. British WWI sidearms, for example, or Austro-Hungarian WWI rifles, or maybe all the guns for one nation grouped together. These would provide a lot of "action" in a shorter video format. I would also suggest trying to tie in to the Battlefield 1 game community, perhaps repackaging some material as a series about the real guns behind the game weapons. Cheers, Matthew

The core-values of the show is explanation of industrial inventions influence on warfare and the way strange myths can influence firearms-development for decades (the US campaign on the Philipines - "Stopping power", the Boer War "The long distance rifle shot" etc). Stick to the core-values and your faithfull followers will remain even more faithfull. It's not a short time fix, but carefull looking long time ahead.

Try for a spot in the American Rifleman magazine with the NRA or on American Rifleman TV. An interview with Tom Gresham on Guntalk Radio couldn't hurt either.

The big exposure would be to get some T.V time. The only problem is your talking about firearms. By T.V. I was thinking of PBS. Which is even more adverse to firearm "promotion" than say cable, but the local PBS station in your area may be a bit less gun shy than other cities, and your shows can fit their no commercial format. Plus you wouldn't be asking for a lot of money to air them, which would make it attractive to the station. If this picks up a following, other PBS affiliates may want in on the show and you get in market.

Ron Johnson

Maybe sponsor an autopsy.

Ethereal

At $5K, you get a lock of Othias' beard and at $50K, Othias shaves the beard. At $100K, Mae get a mohawk. Problem solved and you are welcome :)

Milsurp Mike

I'm afraid I don't have any ready ideas to boost your patronage, but I can do my part to keep you in the black... I've upped my pledge to $15. Worth it for the high quality of information and entertainment you provide!

John

Much appreciated, but rather than flex on you guys more we'd like to find new suckers, I mean fans.

C&Rsenal

We do have at least two projects planned with Ian and are helping Tao with a poster project.

C&Rsenal

Maybe reach out to some of the other gun youtubers?

KrumpetPirate

There, that's handled. I went from $1 to $5.

Pledge increased 👍
