Growing Pains

The past two months have shown significant growth in the channel on two fronts.

The first, largely from our explanation of the YT  monetization never being a strong help and our airing of the "How it's  Made" video.  These appear to have informed our dedicated viewers that  the show cannot exist or grow without direct support. I am VERY  appreciative that people found our project worth sustaining. Consider  yourselves all micro grant writers!

Next, for some odd reason we have had several videos make it into the  mainstream YouTube recommended flow. This generated something like 3/4  of a million new views. Now the number of subscribers who came in from  that is small and of those I am sure even fewer will become regular viewers. Most users seemed to prefer to make a joke about Mae's  appearance. They were pruned.

Every one of the last four videos were demonetized at peak hours regardless  of early upload. So I assume we are either targeted by reporting or some other automatic process kicks in on launch.  Every time I have  petitioned for re-monetization they have been approved in about 20 hours.  Which is when roughly half of you watch the video... unmonetized.  Additionally, despite being monetized our videos saw threefold views  this month but the backend tells me we will receive half of what we got  last month. So we are definitely being restricted at this point.

But!  Our biggest check ever from YT was $350.  With the drive for more support we've easily cleared that, so even $0 is sustainable thanks to literally and personally YOU.

There has also been a lesson.  You see, suddenly having a stream of new viewers triggered that automatic response to want to converted and retain.  But they wanted shallow content.  As a nod I threw together one big shooting compilation as that is usually the part most casual viewers like.  Of course, in C&Rsenal fashion in ended up incredibly long so I doubt it will be a viral hit.  So I started considering other ways to produce smaller videos for exposure.

When I looked at the metrics, however, I realized this is nearly pointless from a work/value standpoint.  Our views skyrocketed but our average watch time plummeted as our dedicated  base was washed out in the data.  The questions rarely came and mostly it was harassment or vague attempts at humor for attention from the other viewers.  The dialogue was dead.  Conversions all the way from casual viewer to Patron were rare.

That said, a few people reached out and told us they were suddenly much more interested in the history.  I'm reminded that the best place to preach a message is to the unconverted.  So what should I do?

Well, I think the compromise is to produce the strong, heavy, well researched content.  Then on certain videos, separate out the shooting segments.  Usually this would be best for weapons featured in video games.  I could do it to ALL the videos but on some level that feels like pandering and sacrificing too much context.  I may take just enough time to create an intro/outro for the isolated firing segments as well, urging viewers to see the whole story.  We will never compromise on quality though and never sell out the dedicated fan for the easy view.

Now, all of that covered, let's talk about the state of the planning for the show.  Thanks to our visit to the NRAAM we linked up with someone who has offered us a pile of machine guns and a place to shoot in November.   Also another private individual has been gathering friends to try and arrange a shoot elsewhere.  If BOTH of these trips work out that should add about 14 automatic weapons to the show's lineup.

Trick is... gotta make about 8,000 rounds of ammo, much of it custom, get it to and from for testing BEFORE we show up, then plan actual travel with time off, food budgets, etc.  It's going to get complicated and pricey but that's why you guys chip in!

In addition we've been digging around for the weirdest we can find including a bid to reactivate an MP18, rebuilding an original Air Service Rifle, restoring a Remington 10 trench gun, plotting how to duplicated incendiary martini ammunition, and there are secret plans with the help of the Cody Firearms Museum to hopefully recreate a prototype trench gun.

We have also arranged to borrow a pile of Ottoman rifles, are looking into restoring an original carbine thereof, have located a Gasser 1870, Belgian Comblain (tricky bit of history there), worked out just what an actual Romanian contract 1915 revolver is marked with, borrowed a set of WWI lever actions, and more!

Finally, and most importantly, the Doc says all the erratic pain in my torso is just an ulcer or two!

Oh, and Mae might be considering a side project on the evolution of the sporting, repeating shotgun.

Comments

Thank you for the help, we appreciate it!

C&Rsenal

Gotta say that your How It's Made was an eye opener and I upped my Patreon support as a result. Thanks for the hard work. As an aside, Mae is cute as a button.

No biggy. Monetization has dipped to inconsequential levels

C&Rsenal

I generally watch a new episode at least twice, usually three times within the first few days of being released. Would you like me to wait 20 hours before I watch so you can get more monetization from Youtube?

TwentythreePER

We would but we have crew members not entirely happy with being public figures. Also Mae has a potty mouth.

C&Rsenal

Yeah a lot of people seem to think isolating the shooting segments would be a good idea. I'll have to give it a try.

C&Rsenal

Thank you but I can screw up pretty big

C&Rsenal

Othias, I am a big fan...and a small supporter of the show and anvil on Patreon. It is an honor to be a tiny part. I believe I have seen each show at least twice and loved them. Also I cherish the relationship you have with the team. One silly thought, would you ever let us see raw footage of the shoots? I suspect a lot happens and I would find it interesting...and I love Mae's wonderful approach to the guns. She obviously loves them and shooting them. Thanks to all of you.

I'm just leaving a comment because clearly you don't have enough to do, Othais. No, but really, this show is a bi-weekly highlight and truly feel the work you do is invaluable. Regarding the "normies" - maybe toss a 5-10 min "simple history" behind the bench format video (keep it in the gun theme, call the series "Bursts") with some key points and a few rounds from Mae. I think for some people giving them a small taste of the good stuff might tickle their tisms and draw them in to the full episodes.

You do what you think is best Othias. To be honest I don't think you could screw up bad enough to run me off.

John R. Dorn

Othias: I think pulling out the "day at the range" segment for an upcoming episode as a teaser trailer will enable you to leverage your already filmed content while dragging in those viewers who're originally shopping for the shorter segments who may just get intrigued by the teaser. You post the whole episodes every other week, so posting the "teaser" in the intervening weeks as a "Coming soon!" advert shouldn't really take you a lot of extra production/editing effort yet net you the result you seem to be hoping for in your comments in this upd8. Best of luck!

Bruce Brodnax

Not a bad idea but I fear the production time. I'm considering a "drop in" format for urging people to watch the full video while showing the shooting segment.

C&Rsenal

Nothing yet. There is a bit of a... personality conflict that needs to be resolved before real work can begin.

C&Rsenal

Thank you!

C&Rsenal

I'm considering standardizing a view of the shooting segment with a call to watch the full content.

C&Rsenal

Thank you, I'm glad it is working for you!

C&Rsenal

There's a saying: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." This is my opinion on the format of the show. The intro, the history, M's shooting, the rhythm between O and M, etc. all result in a pleasant and entertaining view. Please don't change it! Also, the very high quality of the photography, line drawings and animation set C&Rsenal apart from most other gun/shooting channels. The Behind the Scenes episode was a good reminder to us how much work goes into this channel. Keep up the great work!!

I don't mind if you make short video's to go for low hanging fruit, maybe in the form of trailers for the longer video's? If you can reach out to more people, even if 99% of them don't hang around that 1% could be well worth it. As long as it helps you to get the revenue to bring more of the core content with the in-depth long format video's i'm cool with it.

David Gummo

Yeah an internet full of shallow ego's who are convinced that they are infinitely more funny and meaningful than they really are is always going to be the bane of the smaller channels. Happily prune away at whatever these wastes of oxygen blurt out online. As for the other guns coming: that is wonderful news. I'm curious whether there is any progress on that St. Etienne Mle.1907 that popped up here several months ago.

Benjamin de Groot

Thanks for the update. I'm glad you are getting more exposure but more glad you won't let it all go to your heads. Keep being you and we'll keep loving what you do. If I can help with anything let me know.

TwentythreePER

Personally, I love the level of detail that you go into. Sadly, a lot of people have short attention spans. Edited and shortened versions might appeal to those with an interest in history, but lacking the time/patience/attention span to watch the full version. A kind of executive summary might be a good idea. The shortened videos might also serve to peak the interest of someone that was curious enough to watch a short video - but who might be hesitant to spend the time on the longer one ...

plus skeet!

C&Rsenal

I think there is a huge value in reaching out to people willing to more seriously investigate the war, however they first were interested!

C&Rsenal

Well we dont want a large, casual base. The bigger concern is getting enough exposure that the smaller market of serious people can at least find us.

C&Rsenal

I am glad you are finding value in it. The recent video showed her role in editing and screening as well

C&Rsenal

> Oh, and Mae might be considering a side project on the evolution of the sporting, repeating shotgun. For what it's worth, I'd be really interested in that. All the military guns are fantastic and I know you guys are really focused on getting WWI done, but a good primer on an underrepresented civilian sporting theme like that would be really valuable and entertaining; sometimes you just want to get your fudd on.

Michael Stueber

Hi Team, What got me interested was the short version of the T-Gewehr, then the long version of same, then everything else once I realised how well you guys do your homework and tell the story. I think there is scope for a short clip of things that are genuinely enigmatic or odd. The video game angle should not be discounted. Despite its compromises, Battlefield 1 has introduced a lot of people to your subject and I'm sure some of them would be interested to see how the game weapons stack up. Congratulations on the 50 eps. You guys make a great show.

Brendan Funnell

hi othias, while making material shorter might attract the masses i think it creates a dangerous precedent. but i guess there is always an inner battle between keeping it real and gaining a larger fanbase

Sorin Cioriciu

As a historian and a veteran I really appreciate the depth you dive into w/each firearm. My knowledge of the WWI era firearms was limited until I found your channel about 2 years ago. Thank you and your team for the hard work. I hope Mae does more then shoot the guns...

When it's easy enough we will toss out the simple programs.

C&Rsenal

*various states of completion.

C&Rsenal

We think it would be fun and a lot of those guns can be had for under $300. Would be nice to shine some light on them.

C&Rsenal

True. Although we've known from the start advertising wasn't a strong option for the show. So expecting YT money was never workable.

C&Rsenal

Thank you!

C&Rsenal

I don't think we're going that route because we like to keep the content free and public. Exclusives would be hard on the schedule.

C&Rsenal

I want to be careful to not ALWAYS do those as I feel like they will lock people into never trying the history.

C&Rsenal

Such is the internet

C&Rsenal

That would be surprising

C&Rsenal

I was drawn to the channel when you did stories about guns I was interested in. Your format and quality is what we want and we back it up with cash. ...and the war were declared part! Some stories take longer to tell and we want more content not less, so don't get to worked up over the time. Short extra videos from time to time mixes things up a bit and it's fun but don't waste to much energy chasing low hanging fruit. If you catch em you won't keep em. ...and Anvil is super awesome but don't expect that stuff to happen all the time.

Steve Zeatlow

Don't you already have a Remington 10 trench gun or am I confusing models?

Ryan Ulick

Perhaps these people making crass remarks about Mae should pay more attention when she drills a target with perfect center mass hits with hundred year old weapons. Respect. Also, green light on sporting shotgun side project. I'd be watching that.

Really enjoy your channel and find it unfortunate that this YT drama continues and people can not see that it is a manipulation of content. I struggle sometimes because I want to watch your videos as soon as they come out but might not have the hour to spare. Keep up the good work and know it is appreciated. Haters gonna hate just let them argue with themselves

All the Best to you, Mae and the rest of the team. The beauty of your content is the passion with which you execute your parts/tasks; love for history, research, preparation, illustration, the cute energy between you two and the commentary.

Please take care of yourself! On a somewhat related note, do you have any plan to sell DVDs of the show, I would be happy to buy them if you did.

Spencer R

If you're trying to attract normies maybe just edit a 5 minute vid with the quick rundown on a gun and the normal shooting footage and release it on another day later in the week.

At least Othias isn't pregnant :) Keep up the good work.

Milsurp Mike

To be fair, resting often just makes me more anxious!

C&Rsenal

THAT is the issue.

C&Rsenal

if she were a model we'd have even more complaints I'm sure. Such is life!

C&Rsenal

Apparently plenty to some. Oh well.

C&Rsenal

What humor? I'm always serious.

C&Rsenal

We'll get there one at a time!

C&Rsenal

Not a bad idea. Actually I've been kicking around an idea to build a pilot around the 1911 that showed off a more "TV" feel.

C&Rsenal

We actually found that Winchester the pig needed more space than we had and more attention than we could give thanks to the production schedule. Luckily we have a friend out of town who already had a pig, yard, and plenty of time. It was better than raising an unhappy pet.

C&Rsenal

Very good idea. I keep kicking it around and not getting to it. maybe when I settle in to film the next two I can get it done!

C&Rsenal

Thank you! We'll always improve.

C&Rsenal

We won't give up!

C&Rsenal

I appreciate that you're both enjoying the hard work! I hope we don't ever let you down.

C&Rsenal

Email me! Candrsenal@gmail.com

C&Rsenal

We appreciate it! Praise is always kind but believe me, we feel the patron support!

C&Rsenal

Well, they are definitely a priority! We'll stack the episodes up for when you get a break.

C&Rsenal

We don't worry about the general insults. It's the nature of being in the public sphere.

C&Rsenal

C&Rsenal, is, from the onset a sincere, scholarly and always entertaining presentation of firearms history. The detractors and trolls who spend their time trying to sabotage your show and insult and hurt the most charming and endearing Miss Mae don't merit attention from you or anyone. Please continue your format as your painstakingly detailed talks and Ms Mae's shooting and commentary keep me viewing the entire episode sans break. Thank all of you for all of your exhaustive efforts in bringing such high quality. Ffs Otais, take care of yourself. Ms Mae, your triumphant smile at the end of each demonstration never fails to tickle me. My best to you all.

Ronald Hoogenboom

If the occasional 2 min shooting vid can spark the interest of history in just a few otherwise lost souls I'd call that a win. However I hope you don't spend too much of your valuable time on those productions. Keep up the good fight!

gobsmacked!, i just stopped when i saw that some idiot had the temerity to make comments about Mae! no excuse!, always love it when i see that gleam in her eye each time she gets the shot!. as for the content- no research it well- if they want fluff - there are a lot of fluff channels out there that just deliver the party line.

praack

What is wrong with Mae's appearance? I think she is attractive and strikes me as being rather pleasent

Paul Herbert Varga

I know I'm not alone in thinking that what you do is the best shooting related content on the web. A full and balanced mix of education, humour and just sheer bloody brilliance! If I can offer my two penny worth.... don't change a thing - you have it absolutely spot on.

Ian

Again, you are planning to get some guns I have never heard of... I'm waiting...

Risto Alanko

In terms of pulling in new videos, the only thing I'd want you to do is maybe pep up the pre-title intro with a few seconds of clips of the shooting. Otherwise, keep on doing what you're doing, and people who appreciate the in-depth content will stay, those who want shallow shitty content can fuck right off. :)

Joe Venzon

Do you count downloads as viewership? I download and watch your episodes because my streaming can be inconsistent at best.I suspect many people do that have older systems.Oh and will we be seeing more of the little pot bellied pig in the future?\

Ethereal

And your content is the best there is. I see you & Mae as the successors to the Great Ian Hogg.

Jasper Welsch

Awesome work keep it up. For dragging in new viewers, I think a short summary video for the attention span would give a great intro for new potential subscribers - esp on the popular guns that are more easily obtainable.

If things work out, I will see you in November. And if they don't work out, it will only be because I am dead.

Jasper Welsch

Please continue with your collective efforts. Please understand that the quality of your content and your educational efforts are greatly appreciated by many if us.

Charles Adams

Please keep doing the series as you have. It is great to hear in-depth on the military arms. I know of no other source to learn this history ,without much digging on my part and not knowing where to look. I truly enjoy your effort and look forward to each new release. Thanks again.

Andrew Paul summed up my feeling pretty succinctly. Keep up the amazing work Othais, Mae, and all those behind the cameras! You first caught my interest with your episode on the Canuckistanian Syrup Stick (Ross) and turned me into a lifer shortly thereafter. My wife and I always look forward to bringing you all into our home every other Tuesday.

I really enjoy your channel. I have about 500 rounds of 8mm surplus Romanian. If it would help it's yours.

Thomas Ross

Dear Othias, I find what you and your fellow C&Rsenal people do to be TOP NOTCH!!! I am impressed and informed by every video you guys produce. Let me first apologize for not posting enough positive and encouraging comments. The hard work and dedication of the C&Rsenal crew deserve every bit of praise I can give. Never lose hope, the quality and dedication, coupled with your obvious love for your subject matter will always be appreciated by those who know a class act when they see one. Thank you and all those affiliated with your production of C&Rsenal, WELL DONE!!!!!!!

Louis W. Reuter II

I love your work and i can see the passion and dedication you lay in this epic project. I love long episodes but finding it harder and harder to get time to see the episode in one session :). Young kids are alot time consuming πŸ˜‚

Erik

Well, I can tell you that I'll keep watching every video. I love the content you produce and I'm glad the show doing well. I hope the YouTube haters didn't get you down. There are some supremely shitty people in this world. I'm hoping that in the end if and when you compile all this information into a book(s), that I can be one of the first to pre-order it.

Andrew Paul
