Good question. It may have been one of those beloved theories that everyone always wanted to practice, but the conditions for which never actually presented themselves. There's really only a period of ~ 25 years that I can think of where the concept of volley fire really might have had traction: don't forget, prior to the U.S. Civil War, firearm sights tended to be vestigial at best, since the old smooth-bore "Line up abreast at 50 yards & let'er fly" rules of engagement still held sway. It was only after the international long-range matches at Creedmoor that the idea of long range marksmanship really took hold and the whole volley-fire ideal would have had a strong allure.

I liked the comment about the rims. It reminded me of what the Japanese did with having Rimmed versions for machine guns and rimless for rifles.

Glad to see you used my tip on quicker loading of the rimmed cartridge. Did a lot better on the fixed charging bridge rifles. There's always some trouble loading those cartridges, I guess you just have to do it a lot.

I cannot imagine the amount of effort it took to get these episodes out. I'm glad to hear you'll be taking it a bit easier for the next few installments; I've been going though a bit of .32 withdrawal. :) It seems like this was one of those cases where there was just more information (historical and developmental) available for these guns than could be boiled down to a reasonable degree (which makes sense given the abundance of the SMLE in its various iterations, as well as the decently-well-kept records of it's evolution). On the opposite end of the spectrum (sorry to ask about future headaches); I'm sure there are guns for which there is far more information than (accessible) examples (I'm thinking MG's mostly), but have you run across guns for which shootable examples are fairly common, but not much exists in the way of developmental history? Is there anything that's just a "unicorn" gun for this series, something that you'd love to cover, but there's just nothing out there in terms of either examples or info?

That Harris dump system reminds me of how much better the Krag is in its native 6.5x55 SM chambering than the reloading debacle it was in the 30-40Govt. in U.S. service: rimmed cartridges just don't play nice in box mags!
